K Darmaraju being brought to the Kuala Lumpur magistrates' court today.
KUALA LUMPUR : A 32-year-old man was sentenced to 30 days in prison by the magistrates' court today after pleading guilty to reckless driving.
K Darmaraju was charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 after sideswiping a motorcycle carrying a middle-aged couple on the PLUS Highway last Saturday.
The section provides for imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000.
Darmaraju was also fined RM12,000.
Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni ordered Darmaraju to serve six months in prison if he did not pay the fine.
The incident occurred before the city-bound Jalan Duta toll plaza at 2.30pm on May 10.
According to the facts of the case, the victims – a rider and passenger – were travelling on the left lane when the accused struck their motorcycle from behind.
He then fled the scene without stopping.
Both victims suffered serious injuries, including bone fractures. The pillion rider also sustained injuries to the head, a broken ankle, and a fractured rib.
During mitigation, the accused's lawyer, S Vinesh, said his client had no intention of committing the accident. He said his client also regretted the incident and had apologised to those involved.
'He has promised not to repeat this mistake,' he said.
Vinesh asked for the minimum sentence, citing his client's RM2,500 monthly salary as a salesman and his marriage last year.
He also said his client was financially responsible for his elderly parents, and that his father had an upcoming eye surgery.
The court then ordered Darmaraju to serve 30 days in jail starting from his arrest on May 11, and fined him RM12,000.
He was also disqualified from holding a driving licence for five years.

(AKPS pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) detained two enforcement officers at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building in Johor Bahru last night. The agency said the two men were suspected of being involved in the 'flying passport' activity. 'The arrests followed a surveillance operation that began at 3pm on the same day targeting the team on duty. 'The first arrest was made at approximately 7.30pm by the AKPS compliance unit after we detected several suspicious visitor data entries using the user ID of an officer stationed at the vehicle zone counter,' it said in a statement. The agency said its compliance unit also identified data entries involving foreign visitors classified as problematic visitors, which required data error correction action by the supervising officer on duty. 'At around 9pm, we made the second arrest after our compliance unit detected a data error clearance action involving a problematic visitor entry, carried out using the ID of a supervisor stationed in the motorcycle zone. 'A search at the vehicle zone counter led to the discovery of RM2,800 in cash and two mobile phones in the officer's possession,' it said The unit also found 11 passports belonging to Chinese nationals, and three Indonesian passports hidden inside a black bag above the ceiling of a different counter. 'Two more mobile phones were found and seized by our officers after a search at the motorcycle zone supervisor counter, where an on-duty supervisor was present,' it said. Both officers were handed over to the Johor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for further action.

Cops shut down ‘Turun Anwar' stage at Dataran Merdeka over safety, lack of DBKL approval

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — Police instructed Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to dismantle the main stage set up at Dataran Merdeka for an event today, citing safety concerns and lack of approval. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the structure was erected without permission from DBKL or a formal application from the organisers. 'The stage structure did not guarantee safety, and the police were not informed of how many people would be on the stage,' he told reporters via Whatsapp. Mohamed Usuf said that police and the organisers had initially agreed to use two Hilux vehicles as a makeshift stage. Thousands of protestors gathered in central Kuala Lumpur this afternoon to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The demonstration began outside Sogo and Pertama Complex and is expected to move towards Dataran Merdeka after 1pm.
