A rap festival near the Arctic Ocean delights crowds under the midnight sun

Washington Post15-07-2025
UTSJOKI, Finland — It was well past midnight when Mihkku Laiti appeared on stage to perform at an open-air music festival in the Finnish village of Utsjoki, north of the Arctic circle.
Despite the time, Lapland's famous midnight sun was still up. During the summer months the sun doesn't go down at all in Utsjoki, which is less than 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Arctic Ocean.

CTA also announced that the Yellow Line will run until 1 a.m. Additional bus service will be available to connect Union Station or the Ogilvie Transportation Center to Grant Park. Metra will provide extra train service during Lollapalooza weekend. According to festival organizers, small clutch purses and fanny packs that are 6" x 9" or smaller are allowed. The small bags do not need to be clear, but can have no more than one pocket. All other bags larger than 6" x 9" must be smaller than 12" x 6" x 12" and clear. The Weeknd, Shakira to headline 2025 Global Citizen Festival in NYC's Central Park

The 2025 Global Citizen Festival will return to Central Park this September. The Weeknd and Shakira will headline the Sept. 27 show, which will return to the Great Lawn and be hosted for the 11th time by Hugh Jackman. Tyla, Ayra Starr and Mariah the Scientist will perform. More performers are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. This year's festival is focusing on three goals. They are providing energy access for a million people across Africa, providing access to education to 30,000 children worldwide, as well as raising $200 million to protect more than 74 million acres of Amazon rainforest, an area roughly the size of Italy. Locally, the festival is also aiming to register 40,000 people as volunteers across New York City who will also be able to earn points towards getting festival tickets. Tickets to the show are free, but attendees are required to take actions on those goals to earn them. To learn more about how to do that, download the Global Citizen app or head to their website. Tickets can also be purchased. "I'm honored to headline the incredible Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this September. Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world. I can't wait to perform, unite, and inspire action," Shakira said. "The growing impact of the Global Citizen movement touches every corner of the world, and I'm eager to advocate alongside my fellow ambassadors, performers, world leaders, and private sector executives to leave the world better than we found it," Jackman said. "The time to act is now – because every delay puts more lives and more futures at risk. This is about investment in our future, not about aid," Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said. The concert is set for Saturday, Sept. 27, rain or shine. Gates will open at 2 p.m., and the concert will start at 4 p.m. and will run until about 10 p.m. Entry to the concert is closed after 9 p.m. There are no refunds for tickets. Concert organizers suggest people print their tickets, since cell service in Central Park can be unreliable. If you exit the festival, re-entry is not permitted. Most bags will not be permitted. Small, clear bags that are less than 12"x12"x6" in size, or small clutches or fanny packs that are less than 4.5"x6.5" are allowed. In 2023, the Global Citizen Festival took place during pouring rain. The combination resulted in extensive damage to the Great Lawn, which caused its immediate closure for repairs. Global Citizen pays for the all the repairs, but the incident prompted calls for the festival to be relocated.

Free rooftop Edinburgh St James Quarter music festival returns for summer

Edinburgh's St James Quarter Sessions music festival is set to run for a third year. Members of Edinburgh Council's licensing sub-committee granted a public entertainment licence at a meeting on Monday, July 21. The free festival will be held on the centre's rooftop terrace, Level 6, with a stage featuring a range of headliners, local acts, and musicians. It was confirmed there will be two safety stewards on site, first aiders, and the usual security staffing by St James Quarter. Lib Dem Councillor Neil Ross quizzed: 'As you are on the roof, you are presenting your music to the world. Who are your newest neighbours? What is the communication with them?' A St James representative confirmed: 'The newest neighbours are located on Leith Street. Last year, the neighbours were informed and we didn't have any complaints. The PA system is not directed out to Leith Street; it is directed into the quarter.' The rooftop will include audience seating and a bar area to take advantage of panoramic city views. Entertainment will feature a diverse range of musicians, from Glastonbury acts to local grassroots talent. 'You're looking at Jazz, Rock, R&B, Indie, Hip-Hop — all sorts of different performers — covering the whole spectrum,' said the St James representative. In terms of perks for competing musicians, there will be a £1,000 cash prize in place, and opportunity for acts to use W Hotel's recording studio located nearby. 'It's a really well co-ordinated thing,' confirmed the representative. "We're keen to do this next year and the year after that.' Conservative Councillor Jo Mowat said: "I think the neighbours you are most likely to disturb are the Calton Cafe." The sessions will take place from August 15 to August 24. All events are free but ticketed. There will be a cancellation fee for no-shows, which will be donated to charity. More details can be found on the St James Quarter website.
