Inside Ukraine's audacious drone attack on Russian air bases
Kyiv struck where it could make a difference, damaging or destroying military aircraft that Moscow has been using to terrorize Ukrainian civilians with near daily aerial attacks.
The Ukrainian Security Service said 41 Russian aircraft were hit, including strategic bombers and surveillance planes, although it is unclear how many were taken completely out of action.
Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London, said the attack was 'a stunning success for Ukraine's special services.'
'If even half the total claim of 41 aircraft damaged/destroyed is confirmed, it will have a significant impact on the capacity of the Russian Long Range Aviation force to keep up its regular large-scale cruise missile salvos against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, whilst also maintaining their nuclear deterrence and signaling patrols against NATO and Japan,' he wrote in a note.
This is what we know about how the attack unfolded.
The attacks targeted four airfields deep inside Russia, with the farthest one, the Belaya base in Irkutsk region, some 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles) from Ukraine's border with Russia.
The other targets included the Olenya base near Murmansk in the Arctic Circle, more than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) from Ukraine; the Diaghilev airbase in Ryazan Oblast, some 520 kilometers (320 miles) from Ukraine; and the Ivanovo air base, which is a base for Russian military transport aircraft, some 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the border.
A visual shared by the SBU, Ukraine's security agency, also showed another base in the eastern Amur region as a target. It is not clear whether an attack on this base failed or was aborted.
It's these huge distances from the border with Ukraine that likely made Russia complacent about protecting the sites.
Its most prized aircraft at the Belaya base were regularly parked in plain sight in the airfield, clearly visible in publicly available satellite images – including on Google Maps.
Moscow likely believed the distance itself was enough to keep the aircraft safe from Ukrainian attacks.
Russia maintains air superiority over Ukraine and while Kyiv's allies have supplied Ukraine with some long-range missile systems, including US-made ATACMS and British-French Storm Shadows, neither has the range to strike this deep inside Russia.
Ukraine has been using drones against targets inside Russia, including in Moscow, but the low speed at which they travel makes them relatively easy for Russian air defenses to strike them.
This is where the audacity of the attack really played out: rather than trying to fly the drones all the way from the border, Ukraine managed to smuggle them right next to the sites it wanted to target and launched them from there.
Russia's radar and air defenses at these bases were not prepared for such a low-altitude and sudden attack.
The only effective way to stop an attack like this is with heavy machine guns. Russia has been using these against Ukrainian sea drones in the Black Sea.
But these were either not available or not deployed quickly enough at the air bases targeted by Ukraine on Sunday – most likely because Russia simply didn't foresee this type of attack.
CNN was able to verify and geolocated photos and videos from the scenes, confirming their locations near the bases.
Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed in a statement that the attacks – which it called 'terror attacks' were launched from the vicinity of the airfields.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said 117 drones were used in the operation.
According to the SBU, the drones were smuggled into Russia by its operatives. At some point, likely while already in Russia, the drones were then hidden inside mobile wooden sheds.
Photos obtained by CNN show the drones tucked just under the sheds' metal roofs, slotted in insulation cavities.
These wooden cabins were then placed on trucks and driven to locations near the bases.
Ukraine did not disclose how exactly it managed to get the vehicles into the vicinity of high-profile military targets without detection, but reports in Russian media suggested it was relatively simple.
Baza and Astra, two Russian Telegram channels, both reported that the trucks were bought by a Ukrainian man who lived in Russia who then simply paid a quartet of drivers to get them where he needed them.
Neither Russian nor Ukrainian authorities commented on these reports, but the Russian state news agency RIA reported that authorities in the Irkutsk region were searching for a man who was suspected of being involved in the attack. His name matched the name reported by Baza and Astra.
The Ukrainian Security Service said the operatives involved in the operation were safely back in Ukraine by the time the attacks started. Zelensky said they worked across multiple Russian regions spanning three time zones.
A senior source with Ukraine's drone development program told CNN the pilots who flew the drones were probably nowhere near the locations from which they were launched.
'They would have likely setup an internet hub allowing the pilots to (control them) remotely, each rapidly deploying each FPV (first person view drones), hitting each target one by one.'
The source said the communication hub could be 'a simple Russian cell phone' which is harder to track than other systems, such as Starlink that is used widely in Ukraine.
A source briefed on the matter confirmed the attack was carried out via Russian telecommunications networks.
Once the trucks were in place and the drones ready to go, the cabin roofs opened and the drones flew towards their targets.
A video of the attack in Russia's southeastern Irkutsk region that was shared on social media and verified and geolocated by CNN shows two drones flying out of a truck.
They are seen heading towards the Belaya air base in the distance, where thick dark smoke is already billowing from a previous strike.
Another video from the same location shows the truck used to transport the drones on fire after what appears to be an explosion designed to self-destruct the truck.
Zelensky said on Sunday that the attack was in the making for one year, six months and nine days, and praised the security services for a 'brilliant' operation.
Russian officials have downplayed the attack, saying strikes were repelled in the Ivanovo, Ryazan and Amur regions but that 'several pieces of aircraft' caught fire after attacks in the Murmansk and Irkutsk regions. It added that the fires had since been extinguished.
It said there were no casualties. But while Russian authorities tried to downplay the attack, several high-profile Russian military bloggers have been vocal in their criticism.
Rybar, a high-profile Russian military blog, said the attack caused a 'tragic loss for the entire Russian air fleet' and was a result of 'criminal negligence.'
The SBU said the strikes caused an estimated $7 billion in damages and hit 34% of Russia's strategic cruise missile carriers at its main air bases – a claim CNN cannot independently verify.
Ukraine said it destroyed several TU-95 and Tu-22M3 strategic bombers and one of Russia's few remaining A-50 surveillance planes.
A source briefed on the matter said 27 Tu-95, four Tu-160, two Tu-22M3 and 'probably' an A-50 were hit.
The Tu-22M3 is Russia's long-range missile strike platform that can perform stand-off attacks, launching missiles from Russian airspace well behind the front lines to stay out of range of Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire.
Russia had 55 Tu-22M3 jets and 57 Tu-95s in its fleet at the beginning of the year, according to the 'Military Balance 2025' report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank.
The Tu-95 joined the Soviet Union air force in the 1950s, and Russia has modified them to launch cruise missiles like the Tu-22.
Bronk, the RUSI expert, said that replacing some of these aircraft would be very difficult for Russia because they have not been produced for decades.

Last week, the secretary general of NATO, Mark Rutte, rather ickily invoked the word 'daddy' while excusing Trump for using the f-word after Israel and Iran temporarily violated a ceasefire. 'Daddy has to sometimes use strong language,' Rutte said with a laugh, while Trump, who was visiting for a NATO summit and meeting with Rutte, smiled on. Unfortunately for America, Team Trump latched onto the viral moment, posting a video on the White House's official social media accounts that depicted Trump arriving and greeting world leaders at the summit. The clip was soundtracked to Usher's 'Daddy's Home,' a song that's as sexually suggestive as its title suggests. ('I ain't gotta do a lot of flexing — uh-uh. Shorty, you already know what it is,' one lyric goes.) Many found the clip unbecoming, not to mention weirdly sexual, coming from an official White House account. (Granted, posting unbecoming, trollish content is kind of the current White House social media team's thing.) Joshua Terhune, a child therapist in Indianapolis, Indiana, who goes by 'Mr. Joshua' on his popular TikTok channel, sees potential national daddy issues at play. 'My initial reaction to the Usher video was, 'Freud was right!'' Terhune said of the father of psychoanalysis in the early 20th century. 'While [Sigmund] Freud may have held some problematic views, he definitely got a few things right,' Terhune said. He 'argued that people often seek powerful authority figures to fulfill an unconscious desire for protection and guidance, just like a child does with a parent.' It's interesting how Trump and his supporters are blurring these boundaries between a political official and an intimate relationship, Terhune said, and it seems 'clear as day they are playing out some unresolved psychological dynamics.' One good thing to note about daddy issues as a whole? In general, today's fathers are doing a better job of being emotionally present and available for their children, so widespread hang-ups about fathers will probably start to be on the decline. Conservatives, in particular, are pulled in by father-like leaders: President Ronald Reagan wasn't exactly in the same vein as authoritarians like Russia's Vladimir Putin or Hungary's Viktor Orbán (both whom Trump admires), but certain aspects of his presidency align with traits associated with strongmen: charisma wielded by a commanding older man, 'a father knows best' approach to global and domestic threats. In his book 'Moral Politics,' George Lakoff demonstrated how conservatives idealize a 'strict father' model of morality, said Todd Belt, a professor and director of the political management program at George Washington University. 'The father is strong and in charge of the family, and doles out discipline as needed. This is how conservatives view the proper role of government,' Belt told HuffPost. 'So, this terminology of Trump as 'daddy' reinforces his relationship to his base.' But it's not just MAGA conservatives who expect, and even thirst, for some patriarchal shading from their leaders. On TikTok, some Gen Z liberals have given California Gov. Gavin Newsom the 'daddy Newsom' meme treatment. 'In the U.S. in general, we expect our leaders to rescue us, discipline others, and model strength ― all traits we associate with a very traditional, and limiting, father archetype,' said Panicha McGuire, a therapist who works with adolescent clients in San Diego, California. If the daddy figure reminds us that we're the good guys, even better, she said. 'The U.S. has deep intergenerational trauma tied to colonialism, capitalism and rigid gender role[s],' but instead of addressing that, we look to a strong leader to quell our concerns, McGuire explained. (In Trump's case, quell our concerns by literally erasing and rewriting problematic chapters in our past and providing us with scapegoats.) 'We don't teach collective care or mutual responsibility, so we keep cycling through 'father figures' who offer authority instead of accountability,' McGuire said. The 'daddy' talk also speaks to the appeal of authoritarianism to a certain segment of the population. Authoritarianism is characterized by a strong, centralized state with power concentrated in the hands of a single leader or a small group. It's not just branding; I look at it as more of a symbolic invitation back into a hierarchical, authoritarian family structure where power flows one way, and obedience is McGuire, therapist who works with adolescent clients Like many strongman leaders of the past, Trump has leveraged his cult of personality to convince his followers that only he can protect them from any existing threat, whether it's ruthless criminals at the border ('bad hombres'), protesters in the cities who may one day show up at your doorstep, or the perennial threat of 'radical Islamic terrorism.' That's why McGuire sees Trump's embrace of the 'Daddy Trump' image more eerie than icky. 'It's not just branding; I look at it as more of a symbolic invitation back into a hierarchical, authoritarian family structure where power flows one way, and obedience is rewarded,' she said. Authoritarianism ― and more specifically, fascism ― uses eroticism to attract and repel people. The ideology is alluring to some because it plays into both our cultural fetishization of masculinity and power, and our purported discomfort with authoritarianism and nationalism. As humans, we're drawn to force and domination. As Vox noted in 2017, it's the political forbiddenness of fascism in modern times that makes it so erotic ― something scholar Laura Catherine Frost describes in her book 'Sex Drives: Fantasies of Fascism in Literary Modernism.' So using something as overtly sexualized as Usher's 'Daddy's Home' in an official White House post blurs the line between desire and dominance, McGuire explained. 'Evoking not only patriarchal nostalgia but also a disturbing eroticization of control.' Yes, yes, it is. In all his years of studying politics, Belt has yet to see a politician or their team embrace such a kinkified self-image. 'Usually, politicians try to downplay anything sexual in nature because they think it undermines their credibility and perceived fitness for office,' he said. 'I think this is more about appearing tough and in control rather than sexual.' As for why it appeals to Trump? He's probably not particularly tuned in to the sexual connotations, but he's all about projecting hypermasculinity. It's why the president is seemingly so bothered by the 'TACO' (Trump Always Chickens Out) nickname, Belt said. 'I think this 'daddy' stuff has less to do with sexuality than it has to do with the appearance of masculinity,' the professor said. Trump's racking up wins — and rewriting the book on diplomacy
The least diplomatic president in US history is scoring diplomatic victories. Over the last couple of days, Donald Trump has gotten NATO to agree to a defense spending target of 5%, and backed Canada off imposing a digital-services tax on American tech firms. He's done this while being loathed by many of his foreign interlocutors. In fact, Trump has executed a near-complete inversion of the typical diplomatic formula. He's not nice. He's not conflict-averse. He's not euphemistic. And yet he's gotten results. The NATO commitment, in particular, is potentially historic, and could materially strengthen the position of the Western alliance for the long term. Trump is violating the usual rules of persuasion. Abraham Lincoln famously said: 'It is an old and true maxim that 'a drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall.' ' Trump doesn't hesitate to pour on the gall, often in ALL CAPS on Truth Social. The leading 19th-century French diplomat Talleyrand said, 'A diplomat who says 'yes' means 'maybe,' a diplomat who says 'maybe' means 'no,' and a diplomat who says 'no' is no diplomat.' Trump says 'go to hell' as the start of the negotiation. He persuades by pressuring. He coaxes by threatening. He de-escalates by escalating. He wins friends and influences people by convincing them he thinks they're freeloaders and losers. A lot of this is a function of his personality and his experience as a Gotham real-estate developer with a nose for power dynamics, a knack for showmanship and a willingness to court risk. It's hard to see how his style of international politics will be replicable by a more traditional political figure. But undergirding his approach is a key strategic insight into the gap between US military and economic might and that of its allies, and how this meant there was a vast unexploited potential for the United States to throw its weight around. When the US president is talking about pulling the plug on NATO, or cutting off trade talks with Canada — as Trump did in response to the proposed digital services tax — it's going to get everyone's attention. The bull standing outside the door of the china shop is a powerful incentive to get along with the bull. The United States has jawboned European countries about their defense spending over the years, but always in a 'we are all friends here' fashion. Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued warnings, cast in terms of how the United States might one day lose its patience. The Biden team didn't have it in them to force the issue. One expert told The New Yorker of her effort to convince Biden officials to get tougher on Germany over its low level of spending. They demurred. 'We don't want to overpressure them,' the expert recalled them saying. 'They should do it on their own time.' Check out more newsletters What Trump has shown is that 'over-pressuring' can sometimes be the right amount of pressuring. Amazingly, prior to the NATO summit on spending, the secretary-general of NATO sounded like a Republican senator trying to keep on Trump's good side in a text message to the president: 'Europe is going to pay in a BIG way, as they should, and it will be your win.' There's, no doubt, a limit to Trump's way of doing business. It's true that Machiavelli said it's better to be feared than loved, but he also warned against being hated. Operating this way will build up resentment of the United States over time. And Trump so far has gotten his most notable results using his leverage against dependent friends and allies, not China or Russia. Still, there's no denying his unconventional effectiveness. The late political scientist Joseph Nye contrasted so-called soft power with hard power. 'This soft power — getting others to want the outcomes that you want — co-opts people rather than coerces them,' he wrote.
