Bengals' x-factor for 2025 NFL season flying under the radar
When it comes to x-factors in 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals have a few who come to mind.
Think, someone like rookie Demetrius Knight being able to step in and help on the defense right away. Or the front office when it comes to solving the contract standoffs with both Trey Hendrickson and rookie Shemar Stewart.
Somewhat joking about the front office aside, another key x-factor is second-year offensive tackle Amarius Mims, who just found himself spotlighted as such by Pro Football Focus' Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman:
"The Bengals had the second-lowest-graded offensive line in the league, finishing above only the Patriots. The unit remains mostly the same from 2024, and the player whom most are expecting to make a jump is right tackle Amarius Mims. The 2024 first-round pick mostly had a rookie season to forget, placing 67th among all tackles with a 57.8 PFF overall grade. If he doesn't experience a sophomore breakout, Cincinnati's offensive line could struggle mightily once again."

The Bengals are certainly counting on Mims to make a second-year leap and stay on the field. They could also trot out two new starters at guard with free-agent arrival Lucas Patrick and rookie Dylan Fairchild.
Arguably more than anything, the Bengals hope that a new-look coaching staff overseeing the offensive trenches offers a big solution too, helping to get the most out of their guys while finally developing some of their own draft picks properly.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski says Kenny Pickett still in QB race despite injury
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Kevin Stefanski still expects Kenny Pickett to be a candidate for the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback job despite being sidelined with a hamstring injury. Stefanski said before Monday's practice that the process of determining who starts the Sept. 7 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals isn't confined to the five weeks of training camp and the three preseason games. 'The evaluation on these guys is all encompassing. It goes back through the spring. It goes to what they've put on tape already as football players,' Stefanski said. "I know he wants to be out there, but he's still very much involved.' Stefanski did not give a timeline on when Pickett might return, but said he would be evaluated on Thursday, when practice isn't scheduled. The injury occurred on Saturday during a drill late in practice. The injury could not have come at a worse time for Pickett, who was getting more comfortable with the offense and had his best practice on Saturday. 'He did use his mobility a couple times there and is a fast player. He can really run. So, we'll make sure that he heals up nice and fast and then get him back out there. But I thought he had a good four days,' Stefanski said. Pickett — acquired in a trade from Philadelphia in March — and Joe Flacco received most of the snaps with the first team during the first four days of practice. Dillon Gabriel got some first-team reps while Shedeur Sanders just began getting some second-team work Friday and Saturday. Stefanski said Flacco will get the majority of the snaps that would have gone to Pickett. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press

Former Bengals DT Josh Tupou signs with Colts, reunites with ex-Bengals DC Lou Anarumo
The Indianapolis Colts announced they've signed free agent and former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Josh Tupou, reuniting him with former Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Tupou played in three games for the Baltimore Ravens in 2024. He had two tackles during the Ravens' 35-34 win against Cincinnati in Week 10. Tupou played in 65 games with 23 starts over six seasons with the Bengals. The Bengals are scheduled to host the Colts in a preseason game August 23. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered head and neck injuries and was carted off the field after Tupou's sack during the Bengals' win against Miami in 2022. Tupou signed with the Bengals as an undrafted free agent in May 2017. Anarumo was fired in January after six seasons with the Bengals.
