Earth's forests are pivotal to keeping our planet habitable. Freely referred to as the "lungs of the Earth," they blanket about one-third of the globe and have a significant function to play in modifying the weather. Forests also take in enormous quantities of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air — approximately 7.6 billion metric tons each year, NASA says — and emit oxygen, which makes life on Earth viable.

The mission represents a giant leap in monitoring forests and climate studies. Biomass is the first satellite to be equipped with a P-band synthetic aperture radar — a technology that can penetrate deep into forest canopies and show detailed, three-dimensional structures of the trees beneath. Imagine it as an Earth-sized MRI machine. By taking the density and structure of tree trunks, branches, and stems, Biomass will enable scientists to estimate the amount of carbon in forests as well as how much is emitted.

Why forest monitoring is becoming increasingly urgent
Though essential, forests are being increasingly threatened by human action. Deforestation, land degradation, and even increasing fires are diminishing their capacity to sequester CO₂. Hence, forests in most places — particularly tropical forests — are starting to emit more carbon than they lock away, fueling global warming. Tracking how forests react to increasing levels of greenhouse gases and environmental stressors is tricky. Thick forest cover and dense vegetation hinder the measurement of forest health on the ground or even using conventional satellite imagery.

"With Biomass, we are set to harvest critical new information about the amount of carbon held in forests around the globe, which will help to close important knowledge gaps regarding the carbon cycle and, in the end, Earth's climate system," explained Simonetta Cheli, ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programmes. This data is critical. Standing forests have a tendency to retain more carbon than they release. But because of extensive deforestation and forest loss, most forests — especially those in the Amazon and Southeast Asia — have reversed from being carbon sinks to becoming carbon sources.
"This new mission will enhance our capability to measure
forest carbon
stocks and fluxes, which is at the heart of understanding and estimating the effects of climate change," said Michael Fehringer, ESA's Biomass Project Manager.
Biomass satellite to track forest carbon
The satellite was produced with the involvement of 50 partner companies, including project lead Airbus UK. In the days ahead, mission controllers will check that the satellite's systems are working as they should. Once operational, Biomass will start generating 3D maps of forest biomass and carbon distribution, enabling scientists to better understand the changing role of forests in the global carbon cycle. As climate change speeds up and forest health declines, accurate, real-time data is more important than ever. Biomass will enable scientists, policymakers, and conservationists to know where and how to intervene — whether it's safeguarding carbon-dense forests or quantifying the actual effect of deforestation. The mission won't halt climate change by itself, but it might be an essential component in the worldwide effort to slow its impact.

Bharani Chandra Kumar, said, 'Yes, Visakhapatnam does not have at least one leading training institute. As per the current market conditions, the city urgently needs a premier training institute related to Artificial Intelligence, as AI is currently an adjunct to every B. Tech program. Every student should have knowledge of Computer Science and its advanced applications and AI.' Some educationists are of the opinion that engineering education should not rely solely on theory, but should emphasise practical learning through well-equipped laboratories. Advanced laboratories should be created, and the existing laboratories should be continuously upgraded and guided by industry-experienced teaching professors as outlined in the National Education Policy. 'Strengthening the laboratory infrastructure will help students acquire better practical skills and be industry-ready without the need for external training elsewhere. If the laboratories are properly equipped, students can acquire knowledge at the college level itself. To be honest, no educational institution, including government and private ones, has such advanced laboratories with expertise in the laboratory itself in Visakhapatnam,' said a senior professor from Andhra University, who did not want to be named. Speaking to The Hindu, Rushikonda IT Park Association vice-president O. Naresh Kumar, said, 'The proposal for a C-DAC Visakhapatnam centre was made in 2014 itself, but there has been no progress even today. Since the current Centre-State relations are good due to the coalition government, this is the right time to focus on it. Apart from C-DAC, Vizag also needs a Nixi, national internet exchange of India.' ‘Secondary pollutants a serious health risk'
Kolkata: A new study by Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) revealed that nearly one-third of Kolkata's PM2.5 pollution is caused by secondary pollutants — invisible particles formed through chemical reactions between gases like sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and ammonia (NH₃). Yet, these critical contributors remain largely overlooked by India's National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), which continues to focus on direct particulate emissions. Secondary pollutants pose serious health risks, penetrating deep into lungs and entering the bloodstream. Prolonged exposure to PM2.5 is linked to heart disease, respiratory illnesses, and premature death. The CREA analysis shows that ammonium sulfate, a secondary pollutant formed in the atmosphere from SO₂ and NH₃, makes up 34% of the PM2.5 mass on an average across Indian cities. In Kolkata, ammonium sulfate concentrations reach 21.7 µg/m³, placing it among the top five NCAP cities most affected by this pollutant, alongside Patna, Muzaffarpur, Howrah, and Varanasi. "We are ignoring one-third of the problem. Unless we address the gases forming PM2.5, real air quality improvement will remain out of reach," said Manoj Kumar, analyst at CREA. Cities like Jodhpur, Rajkot, and Srinagar were among the few where the contribution was below 25%. The nationwide average ammonium sulfate concentration is 11.9 µg/m³ and the maximum recorded is 22.5 µg/m³ in Patna. In areas near coal-fired thermal power plants, concentrations of ammonium sulfate are 2.5 times higher than in distant regions. CREA found that SO₂ emissions from these plants are the single largest driver, accounting for over 60% of India's SO₂ output. Despite the overwhelming evidence, the study finds, NCAP continues to focus largely on PM10, while PM2.5 — finer, more toxic, and deadlier — gets inadequate attention. Secondary particles like ammonium nitrate also add significantly to the burden, with secondary pollutants forming up to 50% of PM2.5 mass in some areas. CREA recommends NCAP and city-level clean air plans expand focus to PM2.5 and its precursor gases, mandate flue gas desulfurisation in thermal power plants to cut SO₂, regulate ammonia sources, and ensure compliance with emission standards. "Without this, tackling secondary PM2.5 will stay a challenge," Kumar said.
