UP Students Build Portable Ventilator For Just Rs 15,000, Call It 'Lesson From Covid-19'
One of the developers said the project was born out of the Covid-19 pandemic when the scarcity of ventilators and oxygen cylinders turned hospitals into battlegrounds
In a remarkable display of ingenuity and social commitment, four final-year engineering students from the Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology (KNIT) in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, have developed a portable, battery-powered ventilator that could revolutionise emergency care in underserved regions of the country.
At a time when the price of medical devices continues to soar beyond the reach of the average household, this team of Electrical Engineering students – Yash Mishra, Siddhant Mohan Ojha, Vaibhav Yadav, and Aditya Rauniyar – has created a low-cost, lightweight ventilator aimed at delivering immediate oxygen support to patients with respiratory distress.
The compact ventilator is specifically designed to be used in emergency situations, especially in places where medical infrastructure is either minimal or non-existent. The prototype, assembled for just Rs 15,000, can monitor oxygen saturation and air pressure in real time using components like the Arduino Uno microcontroller, a SpO₂ sensor, and air pressure sensors.
Speaking to Local18, Vaibhav Yadav, one of the developers, said the project was born out of the harrowing memories of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the scarcity of ventilators and oxygen cylinders turned hospitals into battlegrounds. 'We wanted to build something accessible, affordable, and effective; a device that could be used even in rural areas or during patient transport," Yadav explained.
The team received crucial technical guidance from their project mentor Er Dilip Kumar Patel and Head of Department Dr Saurabh Mani Tripathi, who lauded the innovation as a potential game-changer in rural and mobile healthcare delivery. Dr Tripathi emphasised that the ventilator's portability and battery-operated design make it highly suitable for ambulances, village clinics, mobile medical units, and even home care.
What sets this project apart is not only the cost – which could drop to Rs 8,000 with mass production – but also the depth of research behind it. The students referred to international research journals, including those published by the IEEE, to inform the device's functionality and safety mechanisms.
The team is now hoping for support from government agencies or startups to take their innovation forward. 'India faces huge disparities in healthcare access," said Siddhant Ojha, adding that if their ventilator can be manufactured and distributed widely, it could save countless lives, especially in areas where help often comes too late.

India to fastrack Rs 20,000 crore 87 MALE drone project for defence forces
New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): At a time when Operation Sindoor against Pakistan is still ongoing, India is looking to fast-track the project for acquiring 87 medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) drones to further enhance its surveillance capabilities both over sea and land borders. Defence sources told ANI that the project under the Make in India initiative for Indian manufacturers aims to boost the capabilities of the armed forces to keep an eye on enemy activities in areas of Indian interest, from the Pakistan border to the China border, and along the maritime zone. A tri-service proposal of around Rs 20,000 crore, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the lead, is expected to be discussed by the defence ministry at a high-level meeting soon, the sources said. The drones would be required to have more than 60 per cent indigenous content, and various major defence players are expected to be part of it, the sources added. The likely contenders for the programme would include Adani Defence, Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited, Raphe mPhibr, Tata Advanced Systems, Larsen & Toubro, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The drones would be required to be capable of flying for over 30 hours at a stretch at an altitude of over 35,000 feet. This would be the first time that indigenous firms would lead the supply of MALE-class drones, as major drone orders have previously gone to Israeli firms. The number of drones required by the forces has been determined by a scientific study conducted by the Integrated Defence Staff, based on the number and size of critical areas to be covered by the forces, the sources said. The Indian forces would also be getting 32 High Altitude Long Endurance class MQ-9B Predators from the US under a foreign military sales deal. The programme would also provide a major opportunity for the Indian industry to develop a drone production ecosystem. Hospital fined 1L for treatment refusal in Kolkata
Kolkata: West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission fined a private hospital Rs 1 lakh for failing to explain why a doctor refused to treat an ICU patient. After his ICU admission, Sunil Baran Ray, a consultant at the hospital, refused to continue treatment. Another doctor, in charge of the ICU, misbehaved with them, Ghosh's family alleged. WBCERC on Wednesday said Woodlands ws asked to conduct an inquiry into both incidents. "We are not satisfied with the explanation offered by the hospital on why the doctor refused to treat the patient. This is unacceptable and unethical. Woodlands tried to evade responsibility," said WBCERC chairperson Justice Ashim Kumar Banerjee. He added that even after the doctor refused to treat the patient, the hospital took no action or made any effort to seek an explanation from the doctor. He said the allegation of misbehaviour has not been proved. A senior Woodlands Hospital official said: "According to the patient's clinical requirement, the treating consultant wanted to transfer him under the care of a nephrologist Woodlands would like to reiterate that since the patient was under joint admission, there was no question of discontinuation of treatment."
