Banksy reveals lighthouse image in undisclosed location

Observer01-06-2025
Banksy has put an image of a lighthouse and the words "I want to be what you see in me" in an undisclosed location.
The image on his Instagram has two older people walking their two dogs near the artwork, which is in black and white with the lighthouse tower shining outwards.
Another picture shows a blurred person riding a scooter and a graffiti tag close by the artwork.
The Bristol graffiti artist has seen his works fetch millions at auction, and led to speculation over his identity.
The latest work, revealed on Thursday, has a tag that seems to say"Yaze," which is the mark used by Canadian graffiti artist Yaze, who also goes by the name Marco The Polo and cites Banksy as an inspiration.
The quote used by Banksy could also have been taken from a song by Tennessee-based country band Lonestar, called "Softly," which features the lyric: "I want to be what you see in me. I want to love you the way that you love me."
Online speculation has claimed that the new piece could be in French city Marseille, a location where French street artist Invader has brought his pixelated style.
Last year, London saw a swathe of animal-themed Banksy works including a rhino seemingly mounting a silver Nissan Micra, two elephant silhouettes with their trunks stretched out towards each other, and three monkeys that looked as though they were swinging ona bridge.
Since putting one of a gorilla lifting the shutter at London Zoo, Banksy has also posted another image, of a Madonna with baby Jesus and what looks like a bullet hole.

France museum-goer eats million-dollar banana taped to wall

A visitor to a French museum bit into a fresh banana worth millions of dollars taped to a wall last week, exhibitors said on Friday, in the latest such consumption of the conceptual artwork. Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan -- whose provocative creation entitled "Comedian" was bought for $6.2 million in New York last year -- said he was disappointed the person did not also eat the skin and the tape. After the hungry visitor struck on Saturday last week, "security staff rapidly and calmly intervened," the Pompidou-Metz museum in eastern France said. The work was "reinstalled within minutes", it added. "As the fruit is perishable, it is regularly replaced according to instructions from the artist." Cattelan noted the banana-eater had "confused the fruit for the work of art". "Instead of eating the banana with its skin and duct tape, the visitor just consumed the fruit," he said. Cattelan's edible creation has sparked controversy ever since it made its debut at the 2019 Art Basel show in Miami Beach. He has explained the banana work as a commentary on the art market, which he has criticised in the past for being speculative and failing to help artists. The New York Post said the asking price of $120,000 for "Comedian" in 2019 was evidence that the market was "bananas" and the art world had "gone mad". It has been eaten before. Performance artist David Datuna ate "Comedian" in 2019, saying he felt "hungry" while inspecting it at the Miami show. Chinese-born crypto founder Justin Sun last year forked out $6.2 million for the work, then ate it in front of cameras. As well as his banana work, Cattelan is also known for producing an 18-carat, fully functioning gold toilet called "America" that was offered to Donald Trump during his first term in the White House. A British court in March found two men guilty of stealing it during an exhibition in 2020 in the United Kingdom, from an 18th-century stately home that was the birthplace of wartime prime minister Winston Churchill. It was split up into parts and none of the gold was ever recovered. —AFP

Ed Sheeran showcases debut collection of Jackson Pollock-esque art

British pop star Ed Sheeran has swapped a microphone for paint brushes, with the fruits of his endeavours to go on display later this week, the London gallery exhibiting his works confirmed Wednesday. The abstract pieces -- colourful Jackson Pollock-esque paintings and prints -- will be available to buy, with part of the proceeds going to the Ed Sheeran Foundation, which supports musical education in schools. They are also set to be exhibited at Heni art gallery in central London from Friday until August 1, with the collection called "Cosmic Carpark Paintings", the gallery said. Sheeran, 34, behind smash hits like "Shape of You" and "Perfect", took to social media earlier this week to share the news, explaining he worked on the paintings last year in between shows. He also shared a video of his painting process at work, showing him splashing large canvases with brightly coloured paint. "I love painting, more for fun and to give to friends, but this time I was encouraged to do a show of them by @damienhirst and @heni," he posted on Instagram. "I paint when I'm not working on a record, just to do something creative with my brain. And it's mostly just splashing colours on canvases, think Jackson Pollock but with colourful house paint." Sheeran added that did not make him "an artist" but noted that he loves "making art" and that "it makes me feel great, and I love the end result". Heni, which said Sheeran's "painting journey" began in 2019 following his record-breaking Divide tour, noted he used one of his earlier creations as the official artwork for his single "Afterglow" in 2020. The colourful pieces in his debut collection were "inspired by celestial patterns" and painted in a disused London carpark last year, it added. Singer, songwriter, and performer Sheeran is one of the most listened to artists in the world. He also makes the list of the 40 richest people under 40 in the UK, with a fortune estimated at £370 million ($504 million), according to the Sunday Times' latest annual wealth rankings of Britons. —AFP

Justin Bieber returns with surprise album ‘SWAG'

Muscat – Four years after his last album Justice, pop sensation Justin Bieber has returned — not with a tour, but with a surprise album titled SWAG. And this time, it's personal. The 21-track album, dropped without warning, dives into the Canadian artist's life like never before — touching on fatherhood, mental health, and fame's quiet toll. While it may not be packed with summer anthems, SWAG hits hard with raw emotion and honest storytelling. One unexpected highlight is Standing on Business, a track that pivots away from the album's sombre tone thanks to comedian Druski's satirical take on Bieber's famously short-tempered beach encounter with paparazzi. It's already causing a stir on social media. Other tracks, like Therapy Session and Forgiveness, strike a different chord. The latter closes the album with gospel singer Marvin Winans delivering a powerful, soul-lifting finale that addresses themes of redemption and healing. Bieber, in his own words, says, 'I've had to go through a lot of my struggles as a human, as all of us do, really publicly. And so, people are always asking if I'm okay, and that starts to really weigh on me.' Fans were already concerned earlier this year after Bieber posted vulnerable messages online about feeling 'broken' and 'unworthy.' With SWAG, he turns that vulnerability into art, offering something of a sonic therapy session for himself and listeners alike. Gospel artist Winans, reflecting on his collaboration, wrote: 'Congratulations for making a wild and deeply inspiring record. Am grateful to have been a tiny part of a beautiful thing.' While hopes for a world tour remain high, any announcements are on pause as the artist continues to recover from Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a condition that temporarily paralysed part of his face. For now, fans will have to settle for deep-listening sessions, headphones on and SWAG on repeat, waiting for the next move from the man who once sang Never Say Never.
