Poor conditions, safety concerns among reasons teachers' quarters unoccupied, says Fadhlina
The Education Minister said a study by the ministry had also found that the quarters were sometimes located in unstrategic or unsafe areas, making them targets for theft and vandalism.
'The total number of teachers' quarters under the Education Ministry is 47,855 units.
'As of June 2025, out of this total, 31,004 units are occupied while 17,524 units remain unoccupied.
'From the number of unoccupied units, the Ministry has successfully optimised 673 quarters, which include 125 units with repurposed functions, 40 units for shared use, 58 units transferred in ownership, and 400 units leased to private agencies,' she said in a parliamentary written reply to Kamal Ashaari (PN-Kuala Krau).
Kamal had asked the ministry to state the government's efforts in optimising teacher quarters in the country.
Fadhlina said that for short-term solutions, the ministry is centralising residents living in teacher quarters with high vacancy rates to moderately occupied quarters.
'Vacated teacher quarters will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine their suitability for optimisation through rental, leasing to interested parties, or recommended demolition if there is no demand, to curb social issues at these premises,' she said.
She also said that the ministry is reviewing applications from Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) and Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs) to establish strategic collaborations to address issues related to unoccupied teachers' quarters, including refurbishing and optimising their usage.
'Following the Cabinet Memorandum (CM) on Nov 22, 2024, outlining the direction to optimize the use of unoccupied quarters, the ministry has received an application from the Home Ministry to explore the possibility of housing members and staff of agencies and departments in Education Ministry-owned unoccupied quarters.
'It is estimated that around 613 quarters will be jointly occupied by Home Ministry agencies and departments such as the police, National Anti-Drug Agency, and Malaysia Volunteer Department,' she added.
In May, The Star reported that teachers had shared their concerns at having to live in poorly maintained quarters nationwide.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must not allow their citizenship to be misused by foreigners to obtain business licences, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said from January 2023 to July this year, 3,703 enforcement operations were carried out against business premises involving foreign workers. "Malaysian citizens must uphold the Rukun Negara and safeguard the nation's identity from being exploited," he said in reply to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said 14,834 compounds were issued, 23 licences terminated, and 2,880 premises seized due to licence violations. He explained that government policies were for the benefit of Malaysians and not foreigners, while clarifying that the ministry had never issued such licences to foreigners. "The local authorities and the government have never allowed foreigners to apply and obtain licences for hawker stalls, small businesses, business premises, retail shops, restaurants, car workshops and markets," he said. He added that foreigners were also not allowed to work at premises owned by the local authorities, as citizens were meant to earn an income through the local authorities' premises. "The local authorities will not compromise with any violation of the terms of the licence issued. Strict action such as seizures, compounds, shutting down of premises and termination of licences will be taken," he said.

It's SWCorp's numbers, not mine, says Nga on rubbish left by July 26 rally
KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has defended his statement that 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left behind following the 'Turun Anwar' rally. Nga said the figures were based on findings by the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp), whose personnel were mobilised on the ground. 'The numbers did not come from me, but from SWCorp. Hundreds of workers were mobilised to clear the rubbish after the rally,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 28). Nga added that he did not deny the efforts of *Unit Amal* members who also helped with the cleanup. 'I appreciate their help and thank them. But I also cannot deny that 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left behind across Sogo, Dataran Merdeka, and even Petaling Street.' He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Awang Hashim (PN–Pendang), who disputed the figures and asked the minister to clarify. 'It's not true. We checked everything,' said the Opposition MP. Nga had previously shared the cleanup figures in a post on X (formerly Twitter), which drew criticism from some quarters. Rebutting Awang's remarks, Nga reiterated that the numbers came directly from SWCorp and were not fabricated. 'Even their chief executive officer was on the ground working late into the night,' he said, while stressing the ministry's firm stance against littering. The rally, held on July 26, reportedly drew a crowd of about 18,000, according to Kuala Lumpur police.

Thailand says open to ‘dialogue' with Cambodia to end conflict

The statement from Thailand's ministry of foreign affairs came after US President Donald Trump said he had spoken with the leaders of both Southeast Asian nations and that the two sides have agreed to meet and 'quickly work out' a ceasefire. The Thai ministry confirmed a phone call between Trump and acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and said in a statement posted on X that 'Thailand agrees in principle to have a ceasefire in place.' 'However, Thailand would like to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side,' it added. The ministry said Phumtham requested Trump to 'convey to the Cambodian side that Thailand wants to convene a bilateral dialogue as soon as possible to bring forth measures and procedures for the ceasefire and the eventual peaceful resolution of the conflict.' Earlier Saturday, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform during his visit to Scotland that he spoke to the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand and that the two sides 'have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!' Thai and Cambodian military forces have clashed for three straight days along their shared border in fighting that has also displaced more than 150,000 people.
