Steven Gerrard in emotional message as Rangers keeper Jack Butland reacts to classy send off
Steven Gerrard has taken to social media to praise retiring former Liverpool team-mate Pepe Reina.
The former Rangers spent nine years at Anfield with the goalkeeper who has decided to hang up his gloves at the age of 42.
Reina was most recently at Italian Serie A side Como and will now become a youth coach at Villarreal.
And after the announcement, Gerrard - odds-on to return to Ibrox as boss - took to Instagram to praise him, with Rangers keeper Jack Butland one of the first to like it.
Gerrard wrote: 'Congratulations on your incredible career and journey Pepe Reina.
'It was a pleasure not only to play alongside you but also to share many years together at Liverpool.
'A leader, standard setter and a top, top goalkeeper. Enjoy your time till you decide your next challenge.
'All the best Rossi La… what a guy.'
Reina will bring the curtain down on his career when Como play the final game of their campaign when they host Inter Milan in Serie A on Friday.
The keeper came through the Barcelona academy, was part of the Spain squad which won the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
He joined Liverpool from Villarreal in 2005 and won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds as he also claimed the Premier League Golden Glove award - given to the top-flight keeper with the most clean sheets - three seasons in a row from 2005-06.
Reina made 394 appearances for Liverpool before leaving in 2014 and going on to have spells at Bayern Munich, Napoli, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Lazio, Villarreal and Como.
He played the 1,000th competitive game of his career in 2023 when he turned out for Villarreal in 2023.
He said: 'A very beautiful career is coming to an end, a very full life. I feel very fortunate for what I've experienced. I didn't expect it, but I think the time has come and I feel like bringing it to a close here."

Arsenal have agreed a fee of around £200,000 with Salford City for Will Wright in an effort to beat Liverpool to the teenage striker. Mail Sport revealed this week that the Gunners had sent a scout to check on the 17-year-old forward during Salford's friendly against York City last Friday. Scouts were suitably impressed as he scored his fourth goal in three successive pre-season games before the match was abandoned. Liverpool were considered to be in pole position for Wright after making an offer of £100,000 plus add-ons and the teenager was believed to be set on a move to Anfield. However, Arsenal have now firmed up their interest with a bigger offer plus further add-ons. Personal terms have yet to be agreed with Wright but Arsenal will hold discussions over the coming days. Manchester City are also interested but have yet to make a firm bid after adding Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri from Sheffield Wednesday for £1.5million. Wright made his senior debut for Salford against Pep Guardiola's City side in the 8-0 FA Cup drubbing in January. He only played a few minutes but his inclusion underlined the League Two side's faith in him. Wright, who scored over 50 goals at all levels for Salford last season, is one of the youngest players ever to debut for the club. He is in the second year of his scholarship, having been spotted playing for local sides Euxton Villa and Fylde only two years ago.

Bryan Mbeumo offered chance to land dream Man Utd shirt number after £70m bid
Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Bryan Mbeumo after offering Brentford £70m for their star man, which should be enough to get the deal over the line Bryan Mbeumo could be handed his dream shirt number of 19 if he can wrap up a move to Manchester United, with the digits currently available at Old Trafford. United are still locked in talks with Brentford but negotiations have dragged on for more than a month as the Bees look to get as much as possible for the Cameroon international, who cost them just £5.8million in 2019. There has been frustration over the low progress of discussions between the two clubs, but now United have submitted a third bid of £70m - hoping it can tempt Brentford into selling their star man. Mbeumo is keen on completing the move to Old Trafford and should the move come to fruition, it seems there will be an added incentive for the 25-year-old. He has always played in the No 19 shirt during his footballing career, having used the number for both Brentford and Cameroon on international duty. And if he joined United, he would be able to snap up that shirt number immediately because it is currently vacant. The last player who wore number 19 for United was defender Raphael Varane, who left the club last summer, joining Serie A side Como. It comes after United had two bids rejected for Mbeumo, the last one being worth around £62.5m - the same amount they paid to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Bees have been adamant that United should pay them more than they did for Cunha because Mbeumo outscored the Brazilian last season and is also the younger player. But a deal is now likely to be agreed after United paid Brentford's asking price for the player - who has already thrashed out personal terms. He has also told Brentford he doesn't want to join any other club despite links to Tottenham, who were interested in the forward after recruiting his former Bees boss Thomas Frank. Mbeumo netted an impressive 20 goals in the Premier League for Brentford last season and is one of the most sought-after players in the top flight. He has scored a total of 70 goals in 242 appearances for the team since 2019, having started off in the Championship.
