MUSCAT: Sohar Aluminium — the country's primary aluminium producer owned 40% by Oman's integrated global energy group OQ — is intensifying its drive to enhance energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and support Oman's broader sustainability ambitions through a series of targeted initiatives. These efforts form part of the company's long-term commitment to operational excellence and environmental stewardship. This report is based on the Sohar Aluminium Sustainability Report 2024, which highlights progress across key areas such as energy management, emissions control, and decarbonisation strategy.
Energy plays a critical role in the company's refining and smelting operations, which are among the most energy-intensive industrial processes. Sohar Aluminium predominantly relies on natural gas secured through a long-standing agreement with the Omani government. To ensure business continuity and operational resilience, the company's on-site power plant is also capable of switching to diesel in emergency situations.
Following the 2023 Order of Magnitude study—which identified 45 improvement opportunities across electricity, gas, water, and compressed air systems—Sohar Aluminium has implemented several energy-saving measures. Among these, the optimisation of the compressed air system has delivered tangible results, including lower energy use, reduced maintenance needs, and extended equipment life. This not only enhances system performance but also contributes to overall emission reductions.
The company's GHG emissions primarily arise from fuel combustion at its power plant and from the electrolytic smelting process, which generates carbon dioxide (CO2), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and hydrogen fluoride. In 2024, Sohar Aluminium continued to employ its proprietary GHG calculation tool, aligned with the GHG Protocol and the International Aluminium Institute's reporting standards, to track and manage emissions. An independent Carbon Footprint study further benchmarked the company's emissions profile against global best practices.
Notably, benchmarking data shows that Sohar Aluminium performs competitively compared to five other smelters in the GCC region, underscoring the effectiveness of its emissions management strategies. The company also adheres strictly to national environmental regulations. However, total emissions intensity rose slightly in 2024 to 6.19 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of aluminium, compared to 5.51 tonnes in 2023—a change likely driven by increased production volumes.
Despite this uptick, the company has made measurable progress in targeted areas. Over the past six years, fluoride emissions were reduced by 22 per cent, while nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the power plant have steadily declined from 2021 to 2024. Sohar Aluminium remains firmly committed to reversing any upward emissions trends and aligning its operations with Oman's net-zero aspirations.
The company's Decarbonisation Strategy, updated and reviewed in December 2024 with stakeholders including OQ Alternative Energy, Rio Tinto, and TAQA, lays out an ambitious roadmap. Aligned with the International Aluminium Institute's net-zero pathways, the plan sets progressive emissions reduction targets: 13 per cent by 2030, 43 per cent by 2040, and 86 per cent by 2050, using 2021 as the baseline year.
Sohar Aluminium's decarbonisation roadmap is further strengthened by its involvement in the SOHAR Net Zero Alliance (SNZA) and its pledge to the IAI's carbon emissions reduction framework, announced at COP28. These partnerships underscore the company's commitment to aligning local efforts with global climate goals.
Aluminium recycling forms a key pillar of Sohar Aluminium's sustainability agenda. In 2024, the company recycled 3,543 metric tonnes of external scrap, reducing the energy required for production by up to 95 per cent compared to primary smelting. This not only contributes significantly to emission reductions but also promotes resource circularity and waste minimisation.
By advancing energy efficiency, pursuing rigorous emissions controls, and embedding recycling in its operations, Sohar Aluminium is demonstrating how industrial giants can play a pivotal role in advancing national and international sustainability objectives.

MUSCAT: OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) – the clean energy arm of integrated Omani energy group OQ – has announced plans to develop over 10 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy production capacity within a decade. It also aims to bring a portion of its green hydrogen production capacity online within this timeframe. According to Najla al Jamali, OQ Alternative Energy CEO, these goals are aligned with the company's decarbonisation and energy transition strategies, consistent with its mandate as Oman's national champion for clean-energy development. 'By 2035, I envision OQAE exceeding 10 GW in renewable energy production and becoming a regional leader, possibly expanding beyond Oman. I would like to see our hydrogen projects supplying both domestic and international markets. Ideally, we would minimise export dependencies by fostering local offtake,' Al Jamali said in an interview with The Energy Year, a London-based news portal. The rollout of this portfolio is already underway, with the recent launch of construction of three renewable energy projects – the Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 wind farms and the North Oman Solar project – with a combined capacity of around 300 MW, the output of which is contracted to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the country's largest oil and gas producer. In addition, OQAE is supporting another 300 MW solar farm to provide clean energy for the Marsa LNG bunkering project currently under construction at Sohar Port. In the interview, Al Jamali highlighted the critical role of international partnerships in delivering OQAE's ambitious clean energy agenda. These partners contribute not only equity but also advanced technology and operational expertise. Many of them – including oil and gas producers and hard-to-abate industries – are also prospective customers for OQAE's clean energy output as they pursue their own decarbonisation pathways. 'In clean energy, our customer base includes PDO, Marsa LNG, Oxy and OQ Exploration & Production (OQEP),' she noted. 'Our potential customers include oil and gas companies such as PDO, BP, Shell and Oxy, as well as industrial players like Vale, Jindal and Sohar Aluminium. Within OQ Group itself, we also look to serve the refinery and plants in Salalah.' Significantly, OQAE is expanding its role in solar and wind energy development aimed at meeting Oman's national renewable energy targets. Earlier this year, OQAE secured a commitment for a stake of up to 25 per cent in all future renewable energy projects procured by Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) – the sole procurer of new power and water capacity in Oman. This commitment encompasses all upcoming solar and wind projects (and potentially other forms of alternative energy as well), beginning with the Ibri III Solar PV project, a 500 MW scheme slated for development in Al Dhahirah Governorate. 'As the national champion, we have rights in Nama Power and Water Procurement tenders. Three projects have already been floated. Ibri III has been awarded, while the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali and Dhofar Wind 2 projects are progressing. Nama Power and Water Procurement has also allocated around 1 GW of wind capacity to us, with some sites already identified and others pending selection,' Al Jamali explained. On the progress of OQAE's green hydrogen ventures, the CEO stated: 'We expect our hydrogen projects to advance from around 2030 onward, with some developments extending into the following decade.' She added: 'Our Hyport project features a 500 MW electrolyser. Green Energy Oman and Salalah H2 each represents around 2 GW. Collectively, these three legacy projects are expected to deliver approximately 400 kilotonnes per year. We believe they are among the most advanced in the region, having gathered wind data and progressed to the pre-FEED stage.'

MUSCAT: Oman's crude oil and condensate reserves totaled around 4.825 billion barrels at the end of 2024, reflecting a decrease of 2.8 per cent compared to the previous year. Natural gas reserves stood at 23.3 trillion cubic feet (TCF), up from around 23 TCF a year earlier. Announcing these figures in its 2024 Annual Report, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals noted that Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) — the largest oil and gas producer in the Sultanate — accounted for about 62 per cent of total crude oil and condensate reserves in 2024. Highlighting the central role of hydrocarbons in Oman's national economy, Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, stated: 'Amid global challenges facing energy markets — ranging from price volatility to evolving demand dynamics — Oman, guided by strategic foresight and sound policies, succeeded in maintaining stable production levels in the oil and gas sector. The average daily production of crude oil and condensates reached 992.6 thousand barrels, with total exports of approximately 308.4 million barrels.' He added: 'The average price for Omani crude stood at USD 80.79 per barrel. In the natural gas sector, average daily production reached 149.2 million cubic meters, comprising 117.5 million cubic meters of non-associated gas and 31.7 million cubic meters of associated gas. Exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) totaled 12 million tonnes, delivered across 181 shipments — a clear indication of the sector's operational efficiency and resilience.' A total of 73 exploration and appraisal wells were drilled last year — 54 for oil and 19 for gas, the report noted. According to Al Aufi, the year 2024 was marked by continued advancements across the oil and gas sectors. 'Our vision remains firmly set on a diversified economic future, enhanced in-country value, and empowered Omani talent across all levels. Despite global challenges, Oman succeeded in maintaining stable production levels in the oil and gas sector, thanks to strategic foresight and sound policies.' Significant progress was also witnessed in the refining and petrochemical sector, said the Minister. A total of 122 million barrels of petroleum products — including gas oil, jet fuel, and naphtha — were exported, while imports dropped to around 2 million barrels, demonstrating growing self-sufficiency and improved value chain efficiency. On the green hydrogen front, 2024 marked a year of 'pioneering milestones' aimed at reinforcing Oman's position as a regional hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen, Al Aufi noted. This was underscored by the signing of eight major hydrogen production agreements — five in Al Wusta Governorate and three in Dhofar. Electricity generated from renewable sources — chiefly solar and wind — accounted for roughly 9 per cent of total power generation in the country last year. This modest but growing share underscores the Ministry's commitment to diversifying the national energy mix and advancing low-carbon solutions, Al Aufi said. The contribution of renewables is set to increase steadily with the commissioning of the Manah 1 and Manah 2 solar farms, which will have a combined capacity of 1,000 MW. Also slated for launch by 2026 are the North Oman Solar project and the Riyah 1 and 2 wind farms, which together are projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 1.4 million tonnes annually, the Minister noted.

Oman's delegation is led by Dr. Saleh Said Masan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry. In his speech at the event, Dr. Saleh highlighted Oman's ongoing national efforts to develop a comprehensive intellectual property system. This system encompasses digital infrastructure, modernization of legislative frameworks, capacity building for national cadres, and raising public awareness about intellectual property culture. He emphasized that these efforts are rooted in the belief that intellectual property is a fundamental pillar supporting the growth of a knowledge-based economy and fostering innovation. Dr. Saleh also noted the significant progress Oman has made in strengthening cooperation with WIPO. This progress is reflected in Oman's accession to multiple international agreements related to intellectual property and the implementation of key projects. Among these projects is the support provided to Omani frankincense producers, including training on intellectual property basics and management, as well as enhancing the local and international marketing value of Omani frankincense by using intellectual property systems as a geographical indicator. He praised WIPO's collaboration with Oman in implementing the National Intellectual Property Strategy project, which aims to establish a sustainable national intellectual property system. This system is designed to protect innovation, enhance the competitiveness of Oman's economy, and encourage the development of intellectual property culture. Dr. Saleh further explained that WIPO experts have worked closely with Oman to customize the Omani version of the 'Distance Learning Programme for Intellectual Property Fundamentals (DL101),' aligning it with national laws and cultural context. Additionally, WIPO has provided technical advice on updating legislation and adopting best practices related to intellectual property. Concluding his speech, Dr. Saleh reaffirmed Oman's full commitment to supporting WIPO's efforts and expressed the country's dedication to collaborative actions aimed at achieving a more just, inclusive, and effective global intellectual property system.
