Mizoram minister expresses concern over drug abuse
Speaking at an event to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at a newly established detoxification centre near Aizawl, Lalrinpuii said, "Addiction is part of a disease which can be cured. That is why the government has set up a short stay or detoxification centre for drug users."
She announced that the centre, named 'Hulhliap', will be operated by professionals and experts.
"This facility is intended to provide comprehensive support with the help of trained doctors, nurses, and counsellors," she said.
The minister urged the inmates undergoing treatment: "You must take this opportunity to amend yourselves and stay away from drugs during your time at the centre."
Excise and Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, who also addressed the gathering, sought the support of churches in combating drug abuse and trafficking.
Encouraging the inmates to make the most of the rehabilitation opportunity, Hmar added, "Those who have not used drugs should never even try it."
The Hulhliap centre for addicts was opened on June 23 at Synod Revival camping centre at Neihbawi near Aizawl.
The detoxification centre can accommodate about 200 inmates at a time.
Officials said the inmates will be initially given detoxification treatment for 15 days by doctors, nurses and counsellors after which they will receive special spiritual counselling.
Once their period of stay at the centre is over, they will be released to their relatives or referred to a rehabilitation centre, they said.
According to the excise department, 29 people, including 6 women, have died due to drug abuse this year.
The department added that a total of 1,908 people, including 234 women, have died due to drug abuse since 1984, when the first drug-related death due to heroin was reported in the state, the department said.

Aizawl, Jul 24 (PTI) Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday inaugurated a trauma care facility at Aizawl Civil Hospital, marking a major step forward in strengthening emergency healthcare in the state. The facility was constructed at the cost of over Rs 5.7 crore, of which Rs 1.21 crore was funded by the Centre, according to officials. The facility includes a reception and triage area, treatment and observation rooms, imaging (X-ray/CT scan), a minor OT/resuscitation room, and rooms for medical staffers, they said. Speaking on the occasion, Lalduhoma said that the facility will serve as a vital centre for timely trauma response and critical care for the people. He stated that the government was also undertaking further expansion of the hospital, including the construction of new blocks A and B at an estimated cost of Rs 88.33 crore. Additional services such as cardiac care, kidney dialysis, and IVF will also be introduced to meet growing healthcare demands, he said. Heggade compliments police initiative on forming anti-drugs committees
Dharmasthala pattadhikari D. Veerendra Heggade has welcomed the move of the Dakshina Kannada district and the Mangaluru city police in asking every educational institution to form anti-drugs committee to combat substance abuse. In a statement here, Mr. Heggade said the Akhil Karnataka Janajagruthi Vedike formed by Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) has been holding awareness campaigns against addiction to alcohol and other substances for the last 33 years. Many prominent personalities have joined hands with him in this initiative of building an addiction-free society. For the last 17 years, SKDRDP has been holding awareness programmes on addictions to tobacco and drugs in educational institutions and has trained 1,145 resource persons across the State. Observing International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as 'Swasthya Sankalpa Abhiyana,' the project has been organising over 3,000 awareness programmes in institutions every year so as to reach at least 3 lakh students. So far, the project has conducted 20,675 such programmes and reached 17.51 lakh students. Everyone, including teachers would be administered the oath of Swasthya Sankalpa on the occasion. The project sets apart ₹50 lakh annually to conduct these programmes, he said.
