Tory Lanez Ordered to Pay Megan Thee Stallion's Legal Fees For ‘Disruptive' Deposition
A federal judge issued the sanctions ruling Friday, saying Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, must pay Megan's 'reasonable attorney's fees incurred in taking [his] deposition.' The judge further ruled that a court-ordered, follow-up attempt to take Peterson's deposition would be supervised by a magistrate judge.

At the April 9 deposition, with Peterson appearing by video from prison, the rapper repeatedly interrupted the attorney who was conducting the exam on behalf of the Grammy-winning rapper, born Megan Pete. Peterson accused the lawyer of planning to leak the video 'to fake some sort of narrative.' He also deflected questions by asking for the definitions of words including 'discuss' and 'approve.'
Asked at one point if he agreed that Megan Thee Stallion and Megan Pete are the same person, Peterson was evasive. 'There's a lot of Ms. Petes in this world. Which Ms. Pete are you talking about?' he replied. At one point, he instructed his lawyer to 'Google how many Megan Petes there are in the world.'
Shortly after the disastrous exam ran off the rails, Pete's lawyers asked that Lanez be held in contempt. In a filing, they said his demeanor was 'so disruptive, inflammatory, and inconsistent with the basic norms of civil litigation' that it 'made a mockery of the proceedings.'
While granting the legal fees for the April exam, the judge's new ruling did not go as far as Pete wanted. Her lawyers had asked that Peterson be forced to pay for the follow-up exam as well.
The April deposition marked the first time Peterson was forced to answer questions under oath since he accused of assaulting Pete with a semi-automatic firearm on a residential street in Los Angeles five years ago. Peterson is now serving a 10-year sentence after being found guilty of shooting Pete in both feet during the alcohol-fueled incident that followed a party at Kylie Jenner's house.
Pete requested the deposition as she pursues her lawsuit against Gramz, whose legal name is Milagro Cooper. Pete claims Cooper spread 'vicious and hateful rumors' about her while acting as Peterson's 'paid surrogate.'
Peterson, 33, declined to testify in his own defense at his December 2022 criminal trial that ended with his conviction on all three felony counts. He's now appealing the verdict. A source previously told Rolling Stone that Peterson regretted not testifying in his own defense. While Pete and her lawyers can subpoena any person they believe has information useful to their case, a spokesman for the non-profit organization whose lawyers now represent Peterson said the incarcerated rapper would not be a willing participant in a prison-based deposition.
'If you know Tory Lanez how I do, good luck trying to get him to 'testify' to anything, it's just not what he does,' Ceasar McDowell, CEO of Unite the People, said in a statement previously sent to Rolling Stone. 'He definitely did not 'agree' to testify now.' Cooper's lawyer, Michael Pancier, confirmed that his client did not oppose the deposition.
Pete first sued Cooper in October, claiming the YouTuber was part of a 'coordinated campaign' to smear her reputation and harass her as retaliation for her testimony against Peterson at trial. Pete claims Cooper has repeatedly attacked her with claims she suffers from alcoholism and requires a guardian. Pete alleges Cooper also promoted a deepfake pornographic video of her.
Cooper denies conspiring with Peterson and tried to get the lawsuit dismissed on the grounds that she was shielded as a journalist. The federal judge overseeing the lawsuit in Florida ruled against Cooper, allowing Pete's lawsuit to proceed. The judge said Pete had made a 'compelling case' that Cooper acted with a 'reckless disregard for the truth.'
Cooper's alleged ties to Peterson were mentioned in Pete's recent petition for a restraining order against Peterson. Pete claimed that Peterson used Cooper as a 'puppet and mouthpiece,' pointing to social media posts from October in which Cooper highlighted Peterson's false claim that the gun used in the July 2020 assault had 'gone missing.' The gun remains in police custody.
At a hearing in January, Pete gave emotional testimony that touched on her claims about Cooper without naming her directly. 'I haven't been at peace since I been shot, and I'm just trying to be un-harassed, not only by the person who shot me, but by the people he's been paying to continue to harass me,' Pete testified under oath. 'I probably won't ever have my own peace about the situation, but I just really want the harassment from the person who shot me to stop.'
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Richard Bloom granted the request, giving Pete a five-year restraining order against Peterson. The judge cited 'several uncontroverted facts' in his ruling, including 'conduct that culminated in [Lanez] shooting approximately five rounds at petitioner that resulted in injuries to her.' The judge said Peterson must stay at least 100 yards away from Pete and refrain from harassing, intimidating, or threatening her in any way until at least January 9, 2030.

Niles is starting a new tradition with ‘Founders Day' event that's hopefully ‘a way to bring people together'
The village of Niles will host its first ever 'Founders Day' later this month, an event expected to be an annual summertime one that is born out of the town celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2024. Acting Village Manager Katie Schneider told Pioneer Press the inaugural event is planned for Aug. 16 at Golf Mill Park. The village's 125th anniversary celebration took place Aug. 17, 2024, to celebrate the north suburb's incorporation as a village in 1899. 'The popularity of it and the nostalgia of having an annual community event specifically for Niles really resonated, so we wanted to continue it. Now we're going to do it annually as Founders Day,' Schneider said. According to Schneider, last year's anniversary celebration brought people together for events and activities. 'It was kind of a throwback to Niles Days, which had gone on for many decades here,' Schneider said. Kristina Vasilic, community engagement and special events coordinator for Niles, has collaborated with village departments, including public works, police and fire, to plan the free family-friendly Founders Day to celebrate the founding of Niles. 'Having it free and open to the community is a way to bring people together. We want everyone to be able to participate,' Schneider said. 'We're hoping a lot of people stop by and make it one of their traditions each summer.' Entertainment is scheduled to include 10-year-old Sophia Hope, who is known as 'The National Anthem Girl' on YouTube and Instagram, performing 'The Star-Spangled Banner.' 'She knows the audience. Her music is always well-received. It tends to get people up and dancing. She's really engaged with the crowd. We've used her many times at our events,' Schneider said. According to Schneider, a concert featuring Brass from the Past will mark the first time the tribute to the legends of rock and soul band performs at a village event. 'It's pop music from all different decades to sing along and dance along to,' Schneider said about the horn band's set list, which primarily focuses on 1960s to 1980s hits. 'Because it's a live band they've got their own twist to it.' Other entertainment planned includes a fireworks show, dunk tank, photo booth, a pie-eating contest and sack races. Activities are set to include bubble artist Jason Kollum from Niles, a face painting and balloon artist from A Hardy Party, JG's Reptile Road Show, Sarah's Pony Rides and a truck featuring video games. 'It's definitely all ages. We have anything for young kids to middle school. Our Teen Center will be there with teen activities,' Schneider said. Food vendors on tap include Jester Food Truck with lemonade and donuts, La Chingada with tacos, Laura Moldovan with cotton candy, Pinoy Grill with Filipino street food, Rita's with Italian ice, SD Pizzeria from Niles and The Yellow Duck Truck with burgers. There will also be a beer tent, organizers explained. 'We try to embrace the different cultures and diversity we have here especially with food trucks and any of our food vendors,' Schneider said. 'We want to appeal to a broad audience with different ethnic cuisines. We want a little bit of everything so people have something to enjoy.' Founders Day will also feature village departments, as well as facility and organization booths – including Niles Family Fitness Center, Niles Family Services, Niles Fire Department, Niles Historical Society, Niles Police Department and Niles Senior Center. 'We do encourage everyone to attend,' Schneider said. 'Having an annual event in the summertime where people can relax, meet with neighbors and have activities is a good opportunity to build a sense of community.'

The album includes collaborations with Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Sting, Sam Smith and a three-way collab with Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande. And that's just for starters. Streisand and her featured artists have won a combined 80 Grammys – and that's not counting honorary awards, such as the lifetime achievement awards that Streisand, McCartney and Dylan each received from the Recording Academy in the 1990s. 'I can share that it was a tough decision!,' Jay Landers, Streisand's long-time A&R advisor, tells Billboard over email. He ticks off these five factors which played into the decision (which he agreed that we could print): 'An abundance of riches: With the exception of two guests, Josh Groban and Hozier, all the other guests are past Grammy recipients. (Josh and Hozier are previous nominees but have yet to win. According to the Grammy website, Josh has five nominations and Hozier has one.) 'Barbra's picks: Barbra had her personal favorite choices which, of course, we seriously factored into the final selections. 'Track popularity: We did consider this relative popularity based on the number of streams and downloads for individual tracks on Spotify, iTunes, etc. ' 'Cannibalization': The recognition that it's historically unwise to submit two songs in the same category for fear of splitting the vote. This made the [best pop duo/group performance] category particularly challenging — weighing legacy artists like Dylan, McCartney, Sting, and James Taylor vs. highly regarded 'newer' artists like Hozier, Laufey, and Sam Smith for example. 'Current taste: Trying to second-guess what 'contemporary' vs. 'seasoned' Grammy voters might think — including their taste and 'demographics' — was something that crossed my mind but [was] not seriously explored.' 'One Heart, One Voice' features three of the greatest singers of their respective generations: Streisand, 83; Carey, 56; and Grande, 32. In a way, it echoes a three-way collab on The Judy Garland Show in October 1963, when Streisand, then just 22, teamed with Judy Garland, then 41, and Ethel Merman, then 55, to sing Irving Berlin's 'There's No Business Like Show Business.' She was also nominated in that category (as well as record of the year) the previous year for 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers,' a collab with Neil Diamond. Over the years, Streisand has also been nominated for collaborations with Michael Crawford ('The Music of the Night'), Celine Dion ('Tell Him') and Bryan Adams ('I Finally Found Someone'). Carey has yet to win a Grammy for a collab, but she has been nominated for collabs with Trey Lorenz ('I'll Be There'), Luther Vandross ('Endless Love'), Boyz II Men ('One Sweet Day'), Whitney Houston ('When You Believe), Joe and 98° ('Thank God I Found You') and Kim Burrell, Rance Allen and BeBe Winans ('I Understand'). The Secret of Life… will be entered in album of the year, best traditional pop vocal album, best engineered recording (for Jochem van der Saag) and best album notes (for Streisand and Landers). The album is a likely nominee for best traditional pop vocal album – an award Streisand has yet to win, despite 13 nominations. (Three of her featured artists have won in the category: McCartney won in 2013 for Kisses on the Bottom, Taylor in 2021 for American Standard and Laufey in 2024 for Bewitched.) If Streisand is nominated for a Grammy this year, she will tie composer John Williams for the longest span of Grammy nominations – 62 years. He received his first nod in 1962 and his three most recent nods in 2024. If Streisand wins when the 68th annual Grammys are presented on Feb. 1, she would set a new record for the longest span of Grammy wins. Streisand won her first two Grammys in 1964, so a win early next year would give her a 62-year span of Grammys. The current record-holder is Tony Bennett, whose wins spanned 59 years, from 1963 to 2022. If Streisand wins, it would be her first Grammy win in any category in 39 years, since she won best pop vocal performance, female for The Broadway Album in 1987. That would be an extraordinarily long gap between Grammys for an artist of Streisand's stature, but she has endured it without complaint. Walter Afanasieff and Peter Asher teamed to produce the album. Both are past winners of the Grammy for producer of the year, non-classical. Afanasieff (who worked on many hits for Carey) won in 2000. Asher won in both 1978 and 1990. Afanasieff and William Ross arranged the Hozier duet, which is being entered for best arrangement, instruments and vocals. Three Streisand recordings have won in that category over the years. Peter Matz won for his arrangement of 'People' (1965), Ian Freebairn-Smith for 'Evergreen (Love Theme From A Star Is Born)' (1978) and David Foster for 'Somewhere' (1987). First-round voting for the 2026 Grammys runs from Oct. 3 to Oct. 15. The nominees will be announced Nov. 7. Final-round voting will be held Dec. 12 through Jan. 5, 2026.
