However, the incumbent govt changed its name to Cheyutha pensions. Also, Congress, in poll manifesto, promised to enhance the social security pensions from 2,016 per month to 4,000, the implementation of which was still pending.
Under the Cheyutha scheme, presently, 2,016 per month is being given to weavers, single women, and widows, among others, while the visually challenged get 4,016. Presently, widows, single women, beedi workers, stone cutters, weavers, specially challenged individuals, dialysis, filaria, and HIV-positive patients below the poverty line and holding white ration cards comprise the beneficiary list of Cheyutha pensions.
However, preliminary inquiries revealed that thousands of beneficiaries of these social security pensions were not staying at the addresses they submitted to the govt. They migrated or shifted to other localities and even to other states, but were availing the monthly Cheyutha pensions.
Also, many beneficiaries died, with some families informing the govt about it and many more not doing so, but pensions were being remitted into their bank accounts.
Complaints were also submitted to the govt that irregularities took place in the selection of specially challenged persons for the scheme during the previous govt, with some availing the scheme despite not being specially challenged. The complainants alleged that some obtained certificates of being differently abled and started availing the pensions.
Over 50% of 44 lakh beneficiaries receive the pension through the bank, and others by the postal department.

For those who completed their know your customer (KYC) details, the pensions were directly deposited into their bank accounts. On its part, the postal department distributes the pensions by holding meetings in gram sabhas, and pension disbursal is done after taking biometrics (fingerprints) of the beneficiaries.
The Society for Elimination of Poverty (SERP) decided to conduct a social audit so that the pensions go to genuine beneficiaries only. Though Congress, during the assembly elections, promised to open the window of the pension scheme to new applicants, it has not been done so far.

J'khand Cong to probe Purnia tribal family lynching: Gen secy

Ranchi: The Jharkhand unit of Congress on Tuesday set up a five-member fact-finding team to independently probe the mob lynching and burning incident of five members of a tribal family on suspicion of witchcraft in Purnia of election-bound Bihar. A mob of 50 around people had reportedly attacked and burned to death the family, including three women, at Tetgama village late Sunday. A 15-year-old, who was away from the house, became the lone survivor and recounted the case to police. Speaking to TOI, Congress spokesperson and general secretary Rakesh Sinha said the team is led by former minister Bandhu Tirkey. Other members include general secretary Amulya Niraj Khalkho, party's state ST cell president Josai Mardi, ST cell vice-president Raj Oraon, and party's mukhiya sangh cell president Somnath Munda. Announcing the team's departure for Purnia from Ranchi, Sinha said, "The team will try to understand the incident threadbare and identify the lapses. It will also study the conditions of tribals living in Bihar, where the JDU and BJP-led NDA alliance is in the state govt." Continuing his tirade against BJP, he added, "Wherever BJP is in the govt, be it on its own or in alliance, atrocities and attacks on tribals, OBCs, Dalits and other minorities is a concerning norm." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He cited the examples of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar." Congress MLA from Jamtara and state health minister Irfan Ansari said, "The incident exposes BJP (NDA)'s attitude towards the tribal community. I have written to chief minister Hemant Soren, urging him to constitute a fact-finding team team and make me a part of it. I will expose BJP." Terming the incident as "extremely tragic", BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo said, "The Bihar govt has taken swift action in the case. The Bihar police has registered an FIR and raids are on to arrest the accused." Citing the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, he added, "The crime rate in Bihar in 2024 has decreased by 30% as against that in 2012-14 (during UPA regime)." "There have been over 8,000 rape incidents, with nearly one-third of the victims being tribal girls, during the JMM-Cong-RJD regime in Jharkhand over the past five-and-a-half years. This data exposes the shortcomings of the present govt in Jharkhand," Shahdeo hit back.

Congress: No discussion yet on inclusion of MNS in MVA

Days after Uddhav and Raj Thackeray shared a stage in a rally against 'Hindi imposition', Congress on Tuesday said that no discussion has been held yet on the inclusion of the MNS in Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). 'No discussion has taken place regarding Raj Thackeray's entry into the MVA,' Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala told mediapersons. On the language row and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's remarks against Thackeray cousins, Chennithala said that the party stands firmly with the sentiments and identity of the Marathi people. 'Mumbai is the financial capital of the country, and people from South, North, and every corner of India live happily here. There is no issue of linguistic or regional conflict. However, in Maharashtra, we stand firmly with the sentiments and identity of the Marathi people,' said Chennithala. State Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal was absent at the reunion of Sena UBT president Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray at the Worli event on July 5, which was said to be a 'celebration of Marathi victory'. However, another MVA member, NCP(SP) working president Supriya Sule, had attended the event along with the Left parties. According to sources within the Congress, following the reunion of the two Thackerays, the party is contemplating fighting solo in the upcoming local body elections in the state. 'The party is focusing on increasing its organisational base. There is a demand from ground level that we should contest independently, which will give an opportunity to many new and fresh leaders. However, the high command will take a final call,' said a senior party leader.
