Trade Arabia31-03-2025
Flag-carrier British Airways has announced that it is improving connectivity between Saudi Arabia and UK by increasing its Riyadh to London Heathrow service from seven to 13 flights per week for the summer season.
The new flight additions will operate nearly every day of the week (excluding Tuesdays), strategically timed to offer customers more flexibility for onward connections within British Airways' extensive global network from London Heathrow to more than 200 destinations, said the airline in a statement.
The airline consistently has Arabic speaking cabin crew on its flights to and from Riyadh enabling them to offer a more comfortable and personalised experience on board, reinforcing the airline's deep understanding of its Saudi Arabian customers' requirements, it stated.
The new flight took off yesterday (March 30) from King Khalid International Airport, strategically timed to offer customers more flexibility for onward connections within British Airways' extensive global network from London Heathrow to more than 200 destinations, said the airline in a statement.
The customers will benefit from nearly double the number of flights, with more than 80,000 additional seats versus last year.
This expansion will strengthen connections between the UK and Saudi Arabia, supporting growing demand from both business and leisure travellers, who can now take advantage of the added frequencies for business trips, family getaways or reconnecting with loved ones, it stated.
British Airways' Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, Neil Chernoff, said: "We are delighted to be increasing our services from Riyadh to London Heathrow, giving customers more options to travel between both regions, connecting families, friends and businesses."
"With fares starting from SAR1956 onwards, travellers will have the option to choose from British Airways' four-cabin configuration, First, Club World (business class), World Traveller Plus (premium economy), and World Traveller (economy), ensuring a tailored experience to suit every travel preference and budget, all while enjoying world-class service and comfort," he stated.
"This addition to our schedule not only benefits our many business and leisure customers, but also strengthens our long-standing connection and cultural ties between both two kingdoms, and we look forward to welcoming our customers on board this year," he added.

Kuwait Extends Private Driving Licence Validity

Kuwait has extended the validity of private driving licence to 15 years for Kuwaitis and GCC citizens, and five years for expatriate residents, Al Anba Arabic daily reported. Sheikh Fahad Yousef Al Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, issued a ministerial decision extending the validity of driving licence for both citizens, GCC nationals and expatriate residents, marking a significant change to the country's licencing rules. Under the new regulations, the validity of licences for expatriates has been increased to five years, up from three. Licences for Kuwaiti citizens and Gulf nationals will now be valid for 15 years instead of 10. For stateless residents, the licence term will remain tied to the validity of their identification documents. The duration of licences for Kuwaitis had traditionally been 10 years, while for expatriates it was reduced at one point to a single year. Several months ago, Sheikh Fahad Al Sabah extended expatriate licence validity to three years, the new announcement pushes it to five years with immediate effect. Kuwait maintains strict conditions for expatriates seeking a driving licence, including a requirement to hold a university degree. New arrivals are eligible to apply only after residing in the country legally for two years. Source Gulf News

Netflix Inks First Middle East Content Bundle Deal With MBC Group

Netflix has entered into its first regional partnership of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), teaming up with MBC Group to offer a combined streaming bundle alongside Shahid, MBC's Arabic-language video-on-demand service. The collaboration brings Netflix content to MBCNOW, a new entertainment platform launched earlier this year by MBC Group. The bundled subscription will give users access to Netflix, Shahid, and MBC's live TV channels under a single payment plan — a first in the region for the US-based streaming giant. This strategic tie-up represents a significant move for Netflix in Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf market, where competition in digital streaming has intensified amid rising local demand for both Arabic and global content. The bundled subscription will be sold in Saudi Arabia through major retailers and e-commerce platforms, with MBC stating that the plan offers more than 20% in cost savings compared to purchasing separate Netflix and Shahid subscriptions. The MENA region has long been a high-growth market for streaming services, with consumers increasingly favouring digital content hubs that blend local and international viewing. By joining forces with MBC — the region's largest media company — Netflix is positioning itself to tap deeper into Arabic-speaking households, particularly in the Gulf. 'This collaboration is part of our ongoing commitment to provide unparalleled global and local experiences for our audiences in the region,' said Bhanu Chaddha, Director of Distribution and TV Products at MBC Group. Mohammed Al Kuraishi, Head of Business Development and Partnerships, Middle East and Africa at Netflix, added that the move would bring users 'easy access to our service and an incredible variety of international and Arabic shows, movies, documentaries, and more.' MBCNOW, launched in February 2025, functions as an aggregator platform and aims to bridge traditional broadcast and digital streaming under one interface. The addition of Netflix further positions it as a go-to content hub for Saudi and Arab audiences.
