MCC launches eco-initiatives at Bario's Pesta Nukenen 2025
MIRI (July 26): Miri City Council (MCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development in the Kelabit Highlands, unveiling a range of initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, waste management and eco-tourism across the region.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of Pesta Nukenen 2025 in Bario, Miri mayor Adam Yii highlighted the council's commitment to development that harmonizes with cultural values and environmental preservation.
'These principles are deeply woven into your way of life, and they fit perfectly with MCC's vision of building sustainable villages and resilient communities,' Yii said.
A major project introduced was the Plasma Pyrolysis system, also known as the Asher machine, which uses solar energy to convert waste into ash, providing an eco-friendly solution to waste disposal.
Yii, who is also the Pujut assemblyman, emphasised the project's alignment with Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy, particularly in promoting renewable energy and responsible rural development.
In addition to embracing green technology, MCC is collaborating with the Bario community on beautification and tourism-related efforts.
Projects include the development of Bario Community Park and Memorial Park to enhance the area's appeal for locals and visitors alike.
Another initiative, Ngeribed Bawang, aims to cultivate native flowers, trees and traditional plants across villages, supported by MCC's plan to establish a dedicated nursery to conserve rare and endangered species.
'We see Bario as a potential model village for eco-tourism, supported by public cleanliness, maintenance and expanded infrastructure,' Yii stressed.
In preparation for Pesta Nukenen, MCC allocated RM80,000 for local enhancement works, including grass-cutting, road and drain maintenance, and repainting shop lots.
Beyond Bario, infrastructure upgrades continue across the highlands under the Inisiatif Kemudahan Rakyat (IKR) through 2025.
'These projects are essential to improving rural connectivity, strengthening local infrastructure and supporting long-term community needs,' Yii said.
He added that six acres of land have been allocated for the development of new shop lots, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurship and economic growth.
To ensure that local voices guide development efforts, a Bario Sub-District Task Force has also been established.
Yii credited the community leaders, volunteers and residents for their continued efforts in preserving Bario's unique traditions.

NCR poverty line at P20,000

MANILA: Filipino families say they now need at least P12,000 monthly to stay out of poverty, with those in Metro Manila placing the threshold even higher at P20,000, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed. Threshold, or the minimum monthly budget that families say they need for home expenses not to consider themselves poor, rose for the first time this year to P12,000, up from P10,000 last quarter. The increase reflects the persistent rise in food, transport and utility costs. Despite this adjustment, SWS noted that poverty thresholds have remained sluggish over time, suggesting that families have been lowering their standards and tightening their belts just to cope with the economic strain. The nationwide survey, conducted from June 25 to 29, also found that 49pc of Filipino families still consider themselves poor, slightly lower than the 50pc recorded in April, but still equivalent to around 13.7 million households. Broken down by region, Mindanao had the highest proportion of families rating themselves as poor at 69pc, an 8-point jump from April. The Visayas followed at 60pc, then Balance Luzon at 38pc, and Metro Manila at 36pc. The number of families who said they were 'not poor' fell in most areas except in the Visayas, where it rose from 24pc to 28pc. It declined to 57pc in Metro Manila (from 60pc) and to 21pc in Mindanao (from 29pc), while remaining steady in Balance Luzon at 52pc. Food poverty also remains widespread. The June survey found 41pc of families considered themselves food-poor, the same level as in April. Mindanao again led with the highest incidence at 60pc, followed by the Visayas (44pc), Balance Luzon (34pc) and Metro Manila (31pc). The percentage of families who considered themselves not food-poor slightly declined to 49pc, while those on the food-poverty borderline rose to 10%, up from 7pc.
