Waltair division champions sustainable efforts to curb plastic pollution
The initiative was rolled out as a prelude to the observance of World Environment Day and will be celebrated across Indian Railways until June 5.
As part of the celebrations, the Waltair Division has undertaken proactive steps to educate people about environmental conservation. Awareness drives have been initiated at station premises to inform the public about the ban on single-use plastics and their impact on the environment. Passengers are being encouraged to carry reusable steel bottles in an effort to reduce plastic waste. The Environment and Housekeeping Department of Waltair Division has initiated special drives to enhance waste management across the division.
These drives include cleanliness campaigns at railway stations and surrounding areas, and in railway establishments, with enthusiastic participation from local communities and NGOs.
Speaking on the occasion, Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra emphasised that the initiative aims to strengthen waste management practices and reinforce the ban on single-use plastics at railway stations. He stated that awareness campaigns are being actively conducted to educate passengers about responsible waste disposal and the importance of environmental sustainability.
To make the drive more effective, nukkad nataks (street plays) will be organised at various stations to highlight the harmful effects of plastic use.
As part of the campaign, a programme was held at Duvvada railway station under the guidance of Kanchumurthi Eswar, member of the Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee, East Coast Railway, in the presence of GVMC corporator Muthyala Naidu, sanitary staff, and Duvvada railway station teams.

Appointment letters given to 93 candidates at Rozgar Mela in Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 93 candidates received appointment letters as part of 16th National Level Rozgar Mela organised by Southern Railway in Thiruvananthapuram. These included postings in Indian Railways, Isro, VSSC, CRPF, Union Bank of India, EPFO, Central Water Commission and IIM Kozhikode. Among them, 54 candidates received jobs in railways. The event was part of a nationwide initiative, where over 51,000 appointment letters were distributed through Rozgar Melas organised by Indian Railways at 47 locations across the country. Divisional railway manager of Thiruvananthapuram Manish Thaplyal said, "It is a moment of pride to witness young individuals stepping into public service, especially in departments like railways, which touch millions of lives daily."

Level crossing accident The tragedy at a railway level crossing near Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu is symbolic of the Indian way of defying rules and regulations. I am now in the United States and in a neighbourhood that is very close to a railway track. I find no gatekeeper and no barrier rods but only a traffic signal-like warning. Yet, citizens dutifully stop their vehicles and wait for the green signal before proceeding. People here are aware that one stands no chance before a mighty railway engine. Some time ago, I had an opportunity to interact with the loco pilot of the Deccan Queen train, from Pune to Mumbai. He was cruising well over 90 kmph and on reaching Ambernath slowed down, well aware that this was the point in the journey where pedestrians begin crossing the railway tracks. Hence, a reduction in speed was essential. For loco pilots of the Rajdhani express, Vande Bharat, and of course the futuristic bullet train, they will remain in fear of irresponsible and daredevil 'track crossers'. Vande Bharat halted near Dindigul after mist from fire extinguisher mistaken for smoke
The Tirunelveli-Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Express was detained near Dindigul railway station on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) after 'smoke' was seen emerging from one of the air-conditioned (AC) compartments. However, it was later found that passengers had mistaken mist for smoke and pressed the panic button. A railway official said the mist had emanated from the aerosol fire extinguisher installed in the coach's restroom. 'A curious passenger attempted to open the aerosol fire extinguisher kept in the coach's restroom. This triggered panic among fellow passengers, who mistook the mist for smoke,' he said. Indian Railways had installed aerosol fire extinguishers in the restrooms of Vande Bharat trains as a precautionary measure to tackle potential fires. 'In the event of a fire, the aerosol fire extinguisher automatically activates due to the heat generated,' he explained. However, the passenger might have been attracted by the 'flask-like' extinguisher and may have inadvertently removed its pin, causing the mist inside to begin billowing out. Meanwhile, the fire alarm in the coach, which detected the 'smoke', was triggered. Passengers then pulled the emergency stop chain. The train was stopped midway between the Thamaraipadi and Vadamadurai railway stations at around 8.50 a.m. After the onboard staff cleared the mist, the train resumed its journey some 25 minutes later.
