While a bakkie is technically specified as a vehicle, it is an institution in South Africa. Something that is almost a necessity in every household.
The Citizen Motoring doesn't exactly qualify as a household, but our long-term Ford Ranger XLT has become an indispose asset to all the households that make up the department.
Bakkie is a must
Blessed with good weather at the Southern tip of Africa, there is as much demand for a bakkie in a domestic set-up than there is an commercial one. There are always garden refuse, plants, compost, a lawnmower, major appliances, furniture, sporting equipment, a bicycle or a wet dog to move. Many of these items can fit is passenger cars, but it is messy and can be a mission of note.
The Citizen Motoring's R681 500 Ford Ranger double cab's XLT badge indicates that it is a much humbler offering than its flashier siblings. Those that carry Raptor, Platinum and Wildtrak badges.

The XLT grading does not come standard with the likes of a loadbin liner. electric sliding roller shutter or fancy roll and sports bars. Our tester does feature after-market rubberising in the loadbin and a soft tonneau cover to keep cargo dry and hidden from prying eyes.

Ford Ranger XLT shines
The more workhorse-like touches work quite well when you regularly put the bakkie to work. Without the flashy bars and add-ons there are less to scratch or break. Especially when you get a spur-of-the-moment idea to chop down an unloved peach tree in your garden. In hindsight not the greatest idea ever, but to chuck everything on the back of the XLT and dump it at the Pikitup is a lot better than splurting out some hand earned cash for someone doing it for you.
And even better, when your bakkie lets you move a big kitchen appliance at no extra cost. Nothing irks this writer more than a shop trying to rip you off a good few hundred rand for delivery when buying something that don't fit in your car. Especially after having forked out a small fortune to replace a tumble dryer in our case, which was a grudge purchase to start with.

Easy on the juice
The Silverton-built Ford Ranger XLT's 2.0-litre single turbo engine that produces 125kW of power and 405Nm of torque and mated to six-speed auto box is of course capable of carrying a lot more than a chopped down tree and a 32kg tumble dryer. A payload of 965kg and a towing capacity of 3 500kg to be exact.

The nice thing about this mill is that it never feels underpowered and delivers excellent fuel consumption as our average of 8L/100km indicates.
Keeping an additional bakkie for when you need is not a commodity the average household can afford. But having one as a daily that can do all your domestic chores over weekends makes perfect sense. Once you are used to the convenience it offers, it's hard to imagine live without one.

Ford Ranger Wildtrak X strikes the perfect balance between refinement and ruggedness
Rugged and stylish: The Ford Wildtrak X Ford continues to have massive success in South Africa in terms of car sales. In June, it sold over 3 000 vehicles and the Ranger made up 2 318 of those sales. Whether it is the 4×2 or 4×4 Ranger, South Africans love these bakkies. In fact, I'm sure we've all been in a position where a Ford Ranger has tailed our backside and forced us to move into a slower lane on the highway. I had the privilege of being one of those guys for a week. The Ford Ranger Wildtrak X arrived in my driveway with its striking looks, capable roof rails and subtle, but essential, cyber-orange accent under the grille. It is by far the most stylish Ranger of all. There's just something about a Wildtrak that gives it a distinctive identity. It could be the black lettering across the front and back or the black oval Ford badges — or even the aluminium side steps. It gives off a very stylish, but rugged, look that makes it feel like more than a bakkie or a workhorse. That's just the exterior. The interior adds to it. There are elements, like the suede material that adorns the glovebox, instrument cluster hood and door trim, that emphasises that the car is not afraid to get dirty and reiterates the ruggedness of the vehicle. You even have a built-in 400W/240v inverter which can be accessed from the rear of the centre console, as well as from the auxiliary power points in the load compartment. You could essentially connect your toaster if you were ever out camping. But, on the other hand, the very attractive portrait-oriented 12-inch touchscreen, the comfortable leather seats that embrace the cyber-orange stitching and features such as wireless charging bring a sense of refinement into the cabin. You don't need to drive the vehicle to actually know what it's about. But when you do drive it, it just confirms that feeling. The Ranger Wildtrak X is powered by a 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine that produces 154kW of power and 500Nm of torque, which is paired to a surprisingly smooth 10-speed automatic gearbox. It is the first Ranger 2.0L Bi-Turbo model to be available with Ford's on-demand four-wheel drive system that offers four modes. It can be driven in 4A (automatic) on high-traction surfaces, with the system continuously distributing power between the front and rear axles for optimum performance in all on-road conditions. The driver can also select 2H for on-road driving, as well as four-wheel drive high-range (4H) and low-range (4L) for more challenging off-road terrain. I love being behind the wheel of the big, rugged bakkies but sometimes that means sacrificing a refined driving experience. Nobody doubts the off-road capabilities of the vehicle but the Ranger Wildtrak X surprised me when it came to riding on the tarmac. The gearshifts were as smooth as butter when picking up speed, the turbolag was not as bad as it usually is on a bakkie and the roads didn't feel bumpy at all. In fact, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were driving a Ford Everest when you are in the Wildtrak X. It brings that sort of refinement to the driving experience but can still tackle off-road conditions with ease. It was a pleasure to drive a total of 200km in it on a trip from Springs to Pretoria and back. The car handled the bendy highways with ease. No bumps, no bruises and certainly no perception of bulkiness for a car that weighs over 2.3 tonnes. Even the backseat passengers were comfortable with the amount of headroom and legroom that they were offered. Safety The Wildtrak X raises the bar in terms of safety compared to the normal Wildtrak. It has a 30mm wider stance to provide an even more stable footprint off-road, while ground clearance has risen by 26mm, helping owners to negotiate more challenging terrain with confidence. The Wildtrak X features seven driving modes that cover everyday and off-road driving (Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl), and comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance and safety systems. These include active park assist; blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and braking; adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centring; lane departure warning and a 360-degree camera as standard. It also comes with trail assist and trail control. Trail assist negotiates tight bends on narrow tracks by applying the brake on the inside rear wheel which reduces the turning radius by up to 25%, while Trail Control helps drivers maintain constant low speed while driving off-road. The driver simply selects a set speed below 32km/h and the vehicle will manage its acceleration and braking while the driver concentrates on steering through difficult terrain. Verdict and pricing Overall, the Wildtrak X strikes that balance between ruggedness and refinement perfectly. It also is positioned perfectly as the highest-spec model before the two V6 variants, the Platinum and the Raptor. But, it does come in at over R1 million. If it's the style that you are after, then R1 070 500 will get you the Wildtrak X, but if you are a power hunter, then add the R80 000 and go for the V6 Platinum variant.

Chery Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid ready to shock the SUV segment
Sprints from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds and won't break the bank at the pumps. Chery made big noise about its hybrid technology at the Shanghai Auto Show in April. After spending some quality time in two of the Chinese carmaker's new energy offerings, we understand Chery's sentiment. Along with the Tiggo Cross self-charging hybrid, Chery last month rolled out the Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) locally. Two PHEV models head the revised Tiggo 7 line-up, which has dropped the Pro and Pro Max monikers from before. We recently had the Tiggo 7 Plus CSH, short for Chery Super Hybrid, on test. The Plus at R619 900 slots in underneath the R679 900 Ultra CSH and are marked down a full R20 000 as an introductory special offer. And even better, it still includes comprehensive after sales backing which features a 10-year/unlimited mileage battery warranty. ALSO READ: Hybrid warfare as Chery Tiggo 7 takes swipe at Jaecoo J7 Performance-like power Apart from the price, the standout feature of the PHEV model is its power outputs. Numbers so impressive that it will qualify as a performance offering in many other stables. The manufacturer's familiar 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine teams up with an 18.3kWh battery hooked up to a single electric motor to form the CSH setup. Together they produce a total of 265kW of power and 530Nm of torque. This is a significant power bump from the 145kW/290Nm produced by the 1.6-litre blown mill model. Even better than the extra oomph is the difference the single-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) makes compared to any other gearbox Chery has to offer. The DHT means the typical Chinese throttle calibration issues are all out the window, with the power delivery being buttery smooth. The steering is a bit light, but still better than what the Tiggo Cross hybrid feels like. ALSO READ: Newly facelifted Chery Tiggo 7 range priced with more features Throttle calibration issues sorted Chery claims the Tiggo 7 CSH will sprint from 0 to 100km/h in a mere 5.4 seconds and we have no reason to doubt them. The torque is so instantaneous when flooring the accelerator, that it behaves much more like a fully electric car than anything mechanical burdened by turbo lag. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The twist is routed to the front wheels as Chery do not offer the hybrids as – or any Tiggo 7 for that metter – with all-wheel drive anymore. When you flatten the accelerator, the amount of torque on the front wheels is so great that it leads to wheelspin on any surface with the slightest tinge of dust about it. The Chery Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid's claimed electric range is 93km. Some logistical issues meant that The Citizen Motoring were unable to charge the car at home or a DC fast charger to put this claim to the test. It did however give us a chance to observe the intricacies of the hybrid system. Chery Tiggo 7's clever system Unlike some brands' PHEV technology, the CSH system does not allow the battery to run flatter than 20%, which is very similar to the BYD Shark bakkie. The engine, along with power restored by regenerative braking, keeps the battery level around the 20% mark. In other words, it then functions like a self-charging hybrid, sans the benefit of a pure electric range. We were unable to determine the accumulated consumption for the car's weeklong stay, but a trip-by-trip readout never exceeded 6.4 litres per 100km, with 5.4L/100km being the lowest. This would indicate that Chery's claimed range of 1 200km with a full tank and full charge is within reach. In terms of styling, the Chery Tiggo 7 CSH adopts the upgrades that have been applied to the entire range. The front end now features a diamond-studded chrome grille and revised LED headlights. We really like the new rear styling, which is a lot more authoritative with its muscular lines. Loads of space and tech Inside, the CSH is as plush and comfortable as we have become used to over the years. Two 12.3-screens features on the dash which is rounded off by the generous use of leather, faux carbon, brushed chrome and veneer. The light emitted through the 1.1 square metre panoramic roof makes the already generous space in the cabin look even bigger. The Chery Tiggo 7 has two 12.3-inch screens. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The infotainment system features six speakers and is geared with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also features the 'Hello Chery' voice assistant and 540-degree camera. There is also a 50W wirelessly charging tray and multiple Type-C USB ports. One feature that will take getting used to is the absence of a push start button. You can't help yourself looking for the button before realising that there isn't one. Once inside, you simply put it in gear and off you go. Providing your seat belt is fastened of course. Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV guns for glory Boot space is rated at 626 litres, with plenty of leg and headroom in the second row. The Chery Tiggo 7 Plus CSH comes standard with front and rear parking sensors and six airbags. Advanced safety systems include blind-spot monitoring, rear collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert. Chery has been hurting the heritage brands in the C-SUV segment and will continue to do that pridct like this. No buyer in this segment can ignore the attractive pricing and the comprehensive package that comes along with it.

PODCAST: Stealth sticker will struggle to revive dated Nissan Navara
Dated bakkie behind Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max in local sales race. South African bakkie owners love stickers. Put a sticker on any existing bakkie and buyers line up whether it's Legend, Thunder, X-Rider or Athlete. The Nissan Navara is the latest bakkie to go down that route with the re-introduced Stealth edition. The Stealth slots in between the standard Pro-4X and the LE on which it is based. Nissan is offering the Rosslyn-built double cab-only Navara Stealth in a rear-wheel drive derivative for R695 200 and a R779 200 four-wheel drive derivative. These prices carry a R35 000 premium over the LE variants. We try to determine whether the Stealth label will give the dated bakkie the gravitas to lure buyers away from Mzansi's three top-selling bakkies, the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max. Separating the Stealth from the LE on the outside are a restyled black grille and bumper with integrated nudge bar. There are also side-steps, a Stealth-badged sports bar and 17-inch black alloy wheels shod in Dunlop Grandtrek all-terrain tyres. It also features black mirror caps and roof rails, black door handles and black Stealth badges at the base of the front doors and on the tailgate. Inside the upgrades are more discreet and features extended leather trim on the doors and armrests. There are no changes up front, where the 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine is carried over from the LE. The mill produces 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque and is mated seven-speed automatic gearbox.
