New infrastructure projects boost rural development in Kapit
The event, organised under the Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat programme, showcased the opening of an iron jetty and cement road, aimed at improving connectivity and living conditions in Kapit.
Works Minister and Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted the strong turnout, noting the presence of 124 longhouse chiefs and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) members as a sign of grassroots confidence in government initiatives.
'This event reflects the strong relationship between the community and the government. It also highlights the positive reception to ongoing development efforts in the N.61 Pelagus state constituency and surrounding areas,' he said.
To further support rural communities, Nanta announced the construction of a new community hall at Rumah Edison Bugap.
He also revealed an allocation of RM857,000 to assist more than 60 longhouses, with each household receiving RM500 in aid.
'This contribution is a token of appreciation for the commitment shown by the longhouse chiefs and JKKK members, and a gesture of thanks for the community's unwavering support for GPS and the MADANI government,' he added.
Nanta urged Kapit residents to remain united in supporting government efforts to sustain development programmes in the region.
He noted that Kapit, once considered remote, is now progressing through large-scale infrastructure projects driven by federal and state collaboration.
Key projects include a RM300 million bridge across Batang Rajang from Nanga Yong and a 2.5-kilometre road linking Jalan Song-Kapit to the Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA) network.
'The road from Nanga Tulie to the Batang Rajang bridge, currently under construction, will serve as a vital link to interior areas such as Sungai Melipis, Sungai Menuan, and Sungai Ibau,' he said.
Other upcoming developments include a MARA Professional College, a new police station, and SMK Bukit Goram.
The government has also approved projects like a new hotel, Bujang Berani Square, and additional infrastructure initiatives expected to benefit Kapit residents directly and indirectly.

'This incident has led some members of the public to question whether Chong was genuinely exercising his role of checks and balances, or merely expressing personal opposition,' Wung said. He added that as a seasoned Member of Parliament and assemblyman, Chong's emotionally charged conduct did not reflect the composure expected of someone in his position. Wung further explained that the last electoral boundary review for Sarawak took place in 2015, and that the current proposal is in line with Article 113(2)(i) of the Federal Constitution, which mandates a review of electoral boundaries at least once every eight years. 'The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)-led initiative to increase the number of state seats is also a strategic step towards enhancing parliamentary representation for Sarawak,' he said. Based on the ratio of two state seats to one parliamentary seat, Sarawak could potentially secure up to 49 parliamentary constituencies. 'Combined with Sabah's seats, this could theoretically fulfil the goal of restoring the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which envisions Sabah and Sarawak holding one-third of the seats in Parliament; thus enabling a more effective check on federal power. This is a shared political vision of GPS leaders and the people of Sarawak,' Wung added. He also noted that the opposing stance taken by two DAP state assemblymen has raised eyebrows among the public, with questions surfacing about whether their position truly reflects Sarawak's broader interests or serves the political interests of others. 'Seat reallocation is not only a legal obligation, but also an opportunity to deepen democracy. The key lies in whether parliamentary seat reforms will follow, ensuring Sarawak has the representation it deserves in the federal system,' he said.

Peter Anthony's conviction review hearing set for Aug 20 in Court of Appeal
PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has scheduled August 20 to hear former Sabah Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony's application for a review of his conviction and sentence. Peter was found guilty of falsifying documents linked to a maintenance contract at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and sentenced to three years in prison along with a RM50,000 fine. A three-judge panel, led by Judge Datuk Azman Abdullah, decided the review was necessary after examining the full written grounds of the earlier judgment. 'Having considered the submissions and affidavits filed, we note that the arguments touch upon the broad grounds previously provided. Therefore, we find it necessary to review the full written judgment,' said Azman, who presided alongside Judges Datuk Lim Chong Fong and Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng. Peter's lawyer, Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, requested the new hearing date, citing his client's current role as Melalap assemblyman and the potential dissolution of the Sabah state legislative assembly in September. Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin did not oppose the request. Peter filed a notice of motion on March 14 seeking to overturn the Court of Appeal's March 4 decision, which upheld his conviction and ordered him to begin his prison term. He also sought to nullify the warrant of committal issued to Kajang Prison. The case originated from a Sessions Court ruling in May 2022, later affirmed by the High Court on April 18, 2023. Peter was charged under Section 468 of the Penal Code for allegedly falsifying a UMS letter in 2014 while serving as managing director of Asli Jati Sdn Bhd. The offence reportedly occurred at the Prime Minister's office in Putrajaya.
