I didn't realize my favorite ‘relaxing' habit was making my indoor allergies worse
Everyone wants a great-smelling home, especially when you live in a busy household or have guests over. Be it scented candles, diffusers or air fresheners, the right fragrance can instantly mask lingering odors, making a room smell fresh and more inviting. However, if you suffer from indoor allergies, you could be causing more harm than good. As someone who loves to create a cozy retreat, I'm never short of beautiful candles or reed diffusers to add to my interior style. Be it in the living room and kitchen (to banish cooking odors), to winding down in the evenings, burning my favorite candles became my daily 'relaxing' ritual. But, I never knew that I could be making my indoor allergies worse, despite owning one of the best air purifiers. If you're on a budget or don't wish to splurge, this Clorox air purifier is great value for money. Ideal for rooms up to 320 sq ft, it's simple to set up and efficiently cleans the air. According to experts, all candles, including those with added fragrance, emit gases such as CO2 and CO during combustion while consuming oxygen. Not only do these give off soot from burning, but emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Such toxic chemicals include phthalates, benzene and formaldehyde, which are known carcinogens to humans. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'They pollute the air by releasing harmful toxins and chemicals into the air around you,' states Shanna Bynes Bradford, MA, CEO/Formulator of Grow Out Oils Clinical Aromatherapy. 'The organic compounds and chemical compounds emitted by home fragrance products, such as benzene, phthalates and formaldehyde, are known to cause cancer, respiratory diseases, breathing problems, and digestive issues.' What's more, if you have existing allergies, these could make your symptoms worse. 'They can worsen asthma, eczema, and sinus problems,' adds Kevin Goude, owner of First Choice Heating & Air. 'They also can disrupt indoor microbiomes and mimic hormone activity in some cases. Certain compounds are linked to endocrine disruption, not just headaches or sniffles. And for kids or pets, that matters a lot more than most people think.' And if, like me, you enjoy fragrant candles all evening, you'll be surprised to know there is a general limit. 'The rule of thumb by the National Candle Association does recommend four hours as a limit for burning candles,' states Bradford. 'It's important to follow the candle manufacturer's instructions, warning labels on ideal burn time using a well-ventilated space, and limiting how many candles are burning at the same time.' While this all might sound scary, there are safer ways you can use candles around the home to minimize risk. 'You can burn them in well-ventilated rooms,' advises Goude. 'Also you can pair it with an air purifier with carbon filters. However, you might not really scent its aroma in this case. So you'd better just avoid them at all.' Another popular option is to buy 'cleaner' alternatives when possible, such as naturally fragranced candles, or diffusing essential oils. 'Choose beeswax or soy candles with natural fragrance and cotton wicks,' adds Nicole Backus, Product and Brand Manager at Clorox Home Appliances. 'Or use essential oil diffusers that rely on cool mist instead of combustion. And of course, using a True HEPA air purifier like those discussed earlier, that feature an activated carbon filtration, can also help remove lingering particles and odors from the air.' Alternatively, there are some clever, DIY ways to make your home smell amazing, from placing sachets of dried lavender or eucalyptus around the home to fresh flowers (alongside your air purifier!). So the next time you want to relax and unwind with your favorite candles, keep these top tips in mind if you want an allergen-free home.

Dark, puffy under-eye circles and redness are no match for it — and neither are the name-brand concealers, at this price. Skin1004's Zombie Pack, which works in just 15 minutes to noticeably reduce the appearance of fine lines, tighten pores, improve texture, and brighten your complexion. The mask itself tightens and cracks as it works on your skin — hence the name! — but when you rinse it off, your skin is left soooo soft and smooth. A fanny pack perfect for keeping your essentials *literally* close to your chest during travel or everyday life. CeraVe's Retinol Serum in case you've been wanting to add a retinoid to your routine but have been scared off by potential flaking and redness — or the price tag of other brands, like Murad's $92 retinol serum. This uses encapsulated retinol designed to help prevent irritation while still resurfacing the skin to help reduce the appearance of acne scars, pores, and more. L'Oreal's illuminating Lumi Glotion if you're going for a dewy, no-makeup makeup look — this works beautifully as a lightweight foundation alternative or for adding a little glow on top of your makeup! And at under $15, it's a reviewer-fave swap for pricier options like Glossier Futuredew and Drunk Elephant's D-Bronzi Drops. BestLand's high-performance matte lipsticks, which might be cheap (less than $2 each!) but bear results that feel ~expensive~ — reviewers are comparing to sooo many pricier brands like Tarte, Stila, and Kylie! This set is honestly a must-have if you love red and pink lip shades, since it contains six long-lasting staples that'll have you look fierce all day long. Or the long-lasting Peripera Ink Velvet Lip Tint, worth the try if you like a little color on your lips but can't be bothered with lipsticks that constantly need touch-ups. This'll give your pout a smooth, ultra-pigmented stain with a silky finish, *and* it also has a lightweight feel that's not sticky or clumpy! Some cleaning tablets that'll rid your retainers and night guards of the gunk that builds up on them over time, but lean in close and I'll tell you a secret: You can also use them to deep clean your water bottles and coffee tumblers instead of the popular, pricey Bottle Bright tablets. These'll run you just 15 cents a tablet! An ultra-light milky toning lotion to balance your skin's pH level, exfoliate, fight inflammation, and moisturize, leaving your face balanced and radiant. It actually strengthens and restores lipids in your skin for softness that lasts. It's similar to Laneige's Cream Skin Toner, but cheaper — and from a small biz! A highly rated pair of hoop earrings if you have designer jewelry taste but not a designer jewelry budget. Reviewers compare these to Jennifer Fisher hoops that go for up to hundreds of dollars and say they don't hurt your ears!

Husband Couldn't Taste Their 'Gender Reveal' Milkshake. But His Wife's Reaction Said It All (Exclusive)
Sarah Smith and her husband Eli found out they were expecting their first child on Jan. 7 As the weeks passed, preparations for the sex reveal began Sarah, 28, started searching online for low-key reveal ideas. One in particular caught her eye: using milkshakesWhen Sarah Smith and her husband Eli found out they were expecting their first child on Jan. 7, the upstate New York-based couple — along with their families — were over the moon. As the weeks passed, preparations for the sex reveal began. Sarah, 28, started searching online for low-key reveal ideas. One in particular caught her eye: using milkshakes. The moment she saw it, she recalls thinking, 'This is it.' 'We've always tried to keep big moments between just the two of us, at least at first,' Sarah tells PEOPLE exclusively. 'It just felt more playful and different.' The reveal happened during a ski trip with friends in Bozeman, Mont. — a place that already holds deep meaning for the couple. It's where they honeymooned, and where they were legally married by proxy while Eli, 30, was stationed overseas. For the reveal, they went to a local spot in Bozeman called Burger Bob's. Once there, they explained the situation to their waitress, Brittney. The instructions were simple: strawberry for a girl, peanut butter for a boy. One shake, two straws, lots of whipped cream. Sarah handed Brittney a sealed envelope with the results from their blood test. 'She was totally into it and really made it special,' Sarah says. Not long after, Brittney returned with the milkshake. After one sip, Sarah tasted strawberry and recalls feeling overwhelmed, in the best way. But for Eli, the moment played out a little differently. 'I tend to hold stuff in when I'm processing big emotions, and in that moment, I had like a million things going on in my head, my straw wasn't working, I was trying to read her reaction, I wasn't even sure if I'd tasted anything yet,' he tells PEOPLE. 'But what really stopped me was her face. I've seen her happy plenty of times, but this was different. It was raw joy,' he adds. 'And knowing she's had some nerves about pregnancy and everything that comes with it … to see all that melt away and just be replaced by that much happiness, it was so sweet to see. I'll never forget it.' Sarah filmed the moment mostly to capture the memory for the pair and to share with family. She hadn't planned to post it publicly, but after sending it around to a few people, she uploaded it to TikTok, where she usually saves sweet memories. Then the video went viral, amassing more than 8.1 million views and 2,400 comments. 'It was wild,' Sarah says. 'I posted it and then just … walked away from my phone. When I came back, it had all these views and comments, and it just kept going. We hadn't even told all our friends we were expecting yet, so suddenly we were like, 'Okay, time to make some calls before people find out from TikTok.' Friends, coworkers, even people we hadn't talked to in years were texting like, 'Wait, is this you?!' ' 'Honestly, it's been really positive,' she adds. 'People seem to love the idea. A few comments were funny or even a little snarky, but nothing that bothered us. We just laugh about it. Some people are convinced Eli looks disappointed, which … he wasn't. But it's kind of hilarious to see the interpretations.' Now 25 weeks along, Sarah says that while the first trimester was tough, she's been enjoying the rest of the pregnancy. She's staying active, and everything just feels more meaningful. 'Every kick, every ultrasound, it gets me emotional every time," Sarah says. "I love setting up her room, shopping for baby clothes, all of it.' 'No way I could've waited until the birth — I really wanted to know," she adds of the baby's sex. "I was hoping for a girl, so finding out early felt important to me.' The couple already has a name picked out but plans to keep it private for now. But when it came to sharing the sex with the world, Sarah says she's glad they did. 'In a world where everything feels like it has to be shared or staged for an audience, this was a reminder that intimacy and authenticity still matter," the mom-to-be says. "It doesn't have to be perfect or go viral to be special. What made that milkshake moment unforgettable wasn't the setup, it was the emotion behind it." "The joy, the nervousness, the genuine surprise. We weren't acting for anyone," she adds. "We were just fully present with each other, and I think people could feel that."
