Olympique Lyonnais to remain in Ligue 1 after appeal

Olympique Lyonnais' relegation to Ligue 2 was overturned by the French soccer federation (FFF) on Wednesday after an appeal by the club.
The FFF has imposed a framework for the wage bill and transfer fees in the club's proposed 2025/2026 Ligue 1 budget.
"Olympique Lyonnais welcomes today's decision by the DNCG to keep the club in Ligue 1," Lyon said in a statement.
"Olympique Lyonnais would like to thank the Appeals Committee for recognising the ambition of the club's new management team, which is determined to ensure that the club is managed seriously in the future."
Lyon were demoted by French football's financial watchdog (DNCG) in November due to the poor state of their finances.
The decision was confirmed in June after a meeting between U.S. businessman and club owner John Textor and the DNCG.
Women's football mogul Michele Kang, who owns Lyon's women's team OL Lyonnes, has been appointed president of Olympique Lyonnais, replacing Textor. REUTERS

Lions head coach Andy Farrell brought son Owen into the squad last week following Elliot Daly's broken arm, which ruled the versatile back out of the three-match test series against the Wallabies. Though boasting 118 England caps and three previous Lions tours, the 33-year-old playmaker's inclusion was polarising given he has not played a test since 2023 and is coming off an injury-plagued season in French club rugby. Andy Farrell, who defended Owen's inclusion last week, said on Thursday his son was no different to other teammates in needing to catch up fast to the Lions' playbook. "He's the same as everyone else who's had to get up to speed pretty quickly," Farrell told a press conference in Adelaide on Thursday. "Everyone had to at the start and a few have come in since. I think the art of this stage of the tour is mentally being as switched on as you possibly can. "There's not that much training that you can do. We're at a captain's run tomorrow and that's the preparation for this game." With only a couple of days' break following the laboured 36-24 win over the ACT Brumbies, Farrell has overhauled his squad while retaining a few players from Canberra. Winger Mack Hansen and loose forward Henry Pollock, who each played off the bench against the Brumbies, were included in the starting 15. England playmaker Marcus Smith has also been retained on the bench after replacing injured fullback Blair Kinghorn when he came off in the first half in Canberra with knee trouble. Farrell said he was hoping for good news on Kinghorn ahead of the first Wallabies test in Brisbane on July 19. Scotland have eye on World Cup seeding as they ready to face Fiji
SUVA - Scotland are aware that vital World Cup seeding points are up for grabs when they take on Fiji in a test on their Pacific tour, adding to the importance of the contest on Saturday, said coach Gregor Townsend. In the December draw for the 2027 World Cup in Australia, the top six in the World Rugby rankings will earn a seeding in the first round pools for the tournament that has been expanded to 24 teams, making a win vital for seventh-placed Scotland. At the 2023 World Cup, Scotland were unseeded and ended up being paired with Ireland and South Africa in the group stage and failed to get past the first round. "This is a very important game along with next week's test against Samoa and also the tests we have in November to put ourselves in the best possible position to get in that top six," Townsend said at a virtual press conference on Thursday. Scotland are narrowly behind sixth-placed Argentina on points, putting the seeding firmly on players' minds. "That can be a bit of added pressure and that's good. These games are all massive and our approach is to go out and win," added Rory Darge, who captains the side in Suva on Saturday. "It's something we've talked about but we can't really look beyond Fiji in Fiji because that's going to be a massive challenge," he said. Townsend said Scotland's approach on their tour, which started with a hard-fought win over the Maori All Blacks in New Zealand last weekend, was to field two separate teams for the opening two matches. "We'd planned to mix it up which is an element of risk. But what I believe works well for us, and has worked in the past, you get that cohesion with this team that is going out against Fiji, having trained together now for the last two or three weeks," the coach added.
