Billions saved as LRT3 nears completion
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the total cost of the LRT3 project now stands at RM21.93bil, still RM9.72bil less than the originally approved cost of RM31.65bil when the project was first introduced in 2015.
The savings were achieved following a restructuring exercise in 2018, which initially reduced the cost to RM16.63bil.
However, in 2024, the government decided to reinstate several components, including five additional stations, seven three-carriage trains, an expanded train depot in Johan Setia, 150 electric shuttle buses and the construction of three bus depots.
'These reinstatements added RM5.3bil to the total cost,' Loke said in a written reply yesterday.
He added that as of July 10, the LRT3 line connecting Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya to Johan Setia in Klang had reached 99.21% completion.
The project faced delays largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which disrupted works between March 2020 and October 2021.
'The MCO caused shortages of skilled and semi-skilled labour. Foreign worker entry permits were only resumed in November 2023,' Loke said.
He also noted that the MCO triggered supply chain disruptions and shortages in building materials, particularly steel and cement.
Loke was responding to a question by Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan (PN-Permatang Pauh), who had asked about the reasons for the delay and the increase in project cost.

The US lowered trade tariffs for Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia to 19 per cent on July 31, while Singapore retained its rate at 10 per cent, Brunei at 25 per cent, Laos and Myanmar at 40 per cent. The new rates come into force from August 7. Loke said Malaysia's leadership as this year's Asean chair has also helped the country regain international relevance. He said Putrajaya played a key role in facilitating peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia, and confirmed that Trump would attend the upcoming Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur. This, Loke said, reflects growing confidence in Malaysia's leadership and diplomatic credibility. He credited Prime Minister Anwar's 'pragmatic, patient and constructive' approach for elevating Malaysia's position in regional security. Under the Madani government, he added, Malaysia has helped steer Asean into becoming a stronger and more cohesive bloc. Loke said Malaysia's diplomatic performance may not always make headlines, but the benefits are real — from easing trade tensions to fostering regional peace. KUALA LUMPUR: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said Malaysia is "moving forward with a stable and prudent administrative direction" after securing a reduction in US tariffs on its products and mediating peace talks in Southeast Asia. "These achievements indicate that Malaysia is moving forward with a stable and prudent administrative direction, aiming to highlight its role as a 'middle power' and open new strategic opportunities for the country to advance," he said is a statement. The tariff reduction, from 25 per cent to 19 per cent, followed a 20-minute phone discussion between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump on July 31. "This outcome signifies a shift from previous threats of high tariffs to a more balanced result for Malaysia, easing economic tensions amid rising global protectionism," said Loke. "Malaysia's current tariff rate is now comparable to other countries in the region, and despite a higher trade surplus with the US, the new rate ensures the country remains competitive," he added. Concurrently, as the current Asean chair, Malaysia successfully mediated peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia. US President Donald Trump also confirmed his attendance at the upcoming Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Loke, whole is also the transport minister, said these achievements are seen as recognition of Malaysia's leadership within Asean and an indication of the country's rising standing in the regional strategic balance.
