Plans could save 19th Century Preston Tithebarn pub building
'Younger generations'
The report noted the former pub, last open in February 2016, was "one of the last remaining buildings from the early 19th Century" in that part of Preston. But it also concluded the partial demolition of the pub would have a "negligible" impact on the setting of the protected property.PPH found the part of the pub fronting Lord Street could be saved, with only a one-time barn area, on Tithebarn Street, needing to be bulldozed.Glenn Cookson, from PPH, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he believed a heritage centre, sited alongside the city's soon-to-open new youth zone, would still be the best plan for the plot."It would capture a lot of footfall, being close to the bus station, but also a big part of heritage needs to be about educating the younger generations", Mr Cookson said.He added that the support for the campaign to save the pub proved how important Preston's heritage was to locals, and that "with a bit of creativity behind some of these older buildings, a lot can be achieved".

Pan-fried scallops with broad bean purée and herb relish
Scallops are one of my favourite shellfish, whether cooked or raw. A truly fresh scallop should be slightly off-white in colour and dry to the touch. For the best quality, buy them in the shell and shuck them yourself, or ask your fishmonger to do it in front of you so you know exactly what you're getting. Overview Prep time 20 mins Cook time 10 mins Serves 4 Ingredients 12 medium scallops, shucked, cleaned, and the bottom halves of the shells kept and washed (to use for serving) For the relish 1 small onion or 2 shallots, finely chopped 1 tbsp cider vinegar 300g broad beans (shelled weight) 2 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil, plus extra for brushing 2 large tomatoes, quartered, seeds removed and finely chopped 1 medium chilli, finely chopped, seeds and all 1 tbsp roughly chopped coriander

Frome Town Council buys water meadow to protect 'haven'
A town council along with campaigners have raised more than £37,000 to buy a water meadow in Somerset along the River Frome. Frome Town Council says the land will now be protected as a "haven for the people and wildlife" at Adderwell Water 2020, the council adopted a rivers strategy by campaigners Friends of the Frome, who were concerned at the state of the waterway, and the impact of sewage pollution and development. Councillor Mark Dorrington said: "This land has vital benefits for biodiversity and in time will create recreational spaces". Chairman of Friends of the River Frome Mike Bull said: "Water Meadows are becoming scarcer but they're needed more than ever to help with the climate emergency". A crowdfunder was started in December with the town council agreeing to purchase the land for £75,000. The authority had already raised £50,000 and an extra £37,000 was generated, over £10,000 more than they had hoped to raise. Mr Bull said: "We're excited to work with Frome Town Council in the coming months to prepare a management plan for the site. "We will also be planning an event in the late summer to celebrate and thank everyone for their help in protecting this important site."Part of Friends of the Frome's 10-year plan for the river is to improve access to it via the town, with a pledge to build a footbridge connecting Adderwell to the nearby residential areas of Edmund Park and Caxton Road.

Telford Sikh temple gets go-ahead for children's nursery
A Sikh temple has been given permission to use part of its site as a children's Gurdwara in Priorslee said it wanted to "maximise its benefits" for the community.A plan to hold weddings for up to 881 guests was recently rejected over concerns about traffic at Telford & Wrekin Council said that the Abbey House site had 109 car parking spaces, while the applicant estimated that the nursery would create 40 trips per day. The gurdwara (Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurdwara) near Priorslee Roundabout already has permission for a games area and children's have said the play area must be developed before the nursery to provide outdoor space. The opening hours of the nursery would not coincide with any event taking place at the gurdwara, and would make use of an "under-utilised" part of the building, the application added that the facility would be "open to the general public, as well as existing members of the congregation/Sikh community". Extended contribution Council planners said: "It is understood that the area in question is currently only occupied during ceremonies or events at the site, providing space for the marriage registry and areas for religious learning."However, during the weekdays this space is not required for these purposes."Planning agent Richard Jewkes of Simpatico Town Planning Limited had told the council that the proposal was aimed at improving facilities at the site, and extending the contribution which the gurdwara makes to the local community.
