KMC seeks funds from govt for upgrading waste management system

Time of India2 days ago
Kolhapur: The KMC administration has sent a proposal of Rs 13 crore to the govt to upgrade waste management system at the trash processing site at Kasba Bavda.
If the system here is upgraded, 300 tonnes of waste can be processed per day, said deputy commissioner Paritosh Kankal.
This proposal has been sent with a view to increase the capacity of waste processing, considering the eight villages that will be included in the city after the merger of fringe villages with Kolhapur Municipal corporation limits, added Kankal.
On Friday, KMC administrative officials visited all the projects under the health department of KMC, such as STP plant, solid waste project, biomedical waste processing plant, and garbage project.
The waste coming from the city is processed through RDF (refuse derived fuel), biogas, compost fertilizer, slurry horticulture, etc. projects. Assistant commissioner Krishnat Patil, Hemant Kashid, and other officials were present.
Around 230 tonnes of waste is collected from the entire city per day at the waste processing plant at Kasba Bawda. Of this, 200 to 210 tonnes of waste is processed here. There is a possibility of expansion of city limits.

In the first phase, eight villages will be included. After the inclusion of eight villages, the collection of waste will increase by about 70 to 80 tonnes per day.
Deputy commissioner Paritosh Kankal said, "The existing system was installed in 2019. Currently, the system needs to be updated. A fund of Rs13 crore is required for this, and the proposal has been submitted to the govt by the municipal administration. The upcoming biogas project has a capacity of 30 tonnes.
It will be upgraded to 50 tonnes. If the capacity of the project is increased, it will be able to generate electricity and produce CNG gas.
The power generation system is ready. But a project will have to be set up to convert biogas into CNG gas, and a fund of 5 crore is required for this. Efforts are underway to provide funds from MPCP and the non-conventional energy department."
Assistant commissioner Krishnat Patil said, "Around 1,65,000 metric tonnes of waste is lying at the project site. The garbage dump will be removed through biomining. The process of biomining is in the final stages. Biomining will start soon after the monsoon. The garbage mountain here will be destroyed within a year. The work on the third development plan of the city is underway. In this, there is a demand that space be given for waste processing projects under the four divisional offices of the city.
It is expensive to collect waste from the entire city in one place. Therefore, the municipal corporation will try to decentralise the waste processing project in future."
