Ukrainian soldiers dismiss Trump-Russia peace push
Clutching an assault rifle, an infantryman who goes by the call sign "Rugbyist" recalled Ukraine's fierce resistance in the first weeks of Russia's February 2022 invasion, before Western support poured in, and suggested his country could do it again if needed.
In any case, he had not placed high hopes in U.S. President Donald Trump standing up for Ukraine: "You can't be betrayed by a person you didn't expect anything from."
Another soldier, known as "Pruzhynka", was equally dismissive of the Russian-U.S. talks held in Saudi Arabia and said he still plans to take the fight to the enemy when he returns to the front.
"Maybe they decided something over there - but that's their opinion," the 21-year-old, whose call sign means "spring", told Reuters at a training base in southeastern Ukraine.
"Ukrainians won't believe all that."
Trump's push for a quick peace with Moscow while sidelining Ukraine has caused fear among many Ukrainians and their allies.
But front-line troops say they are determined to fight on, citing three years of bitter sacrifices and the loss of tens of thousands of comrades-in-arms.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has dismissed any deals made behind Ukraine's back and has sought strong security guarantees from Kyiv's partners before agreeing to any settlement.
Trump envoy Keith Kellogg said on Friday that he had "extensive and positive" talks with Zelenskiy during a trip to Kyiv but offered no further information.
Also on Friday, the Kremlin hinted at a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin but said the details had yet to be worked out.
On the battlefield, meanwhile, outmanned and outgunned Ukrainian troops are struggling to hold back Russian advances along much of the sprawling eastern front.
Fighting has been particularly fierce near the embattled logistics hub of Pokrovsk, defended in part by troops from Ukraine's 68th Jaeger Brigade.
At their training ground, soldiers said they had little faith in the ongoing peace effort and saw no immediate end to the fighting.
"There are many patriots among us - we're descendants of the Cossacks," said "Alladin", who was training the troops.
"We will fight till the end."

President Donald Trump on Thursday denied writing a letter to Jeffrey Epstein more than two decades ago that reportedly included an outline of a naked woman and a "Donald" signature. The denial came in response to a Wall Street Journal article that said Trump was among dozens of Epstein's associates enlisted by his then-confidant Ghislaine Maxwell to contribute to a collection of letters she planned to give him in a birthday album. According to documents reviewed by the Journal, Trump's letter featured several lines of typewritten text framed by what appeared to be a hand-drawn outline of a naked woman. The outline, according to the outlet, included details meant to depict the woman's breast. Trump's signature was drawn across the woman's waist, meant to mimic the appearance of pubic hair. NBC News has not independently verified or seen the letter. In a phone interview with the Journal, Trump denied writing the letter to Epstein or drawing the accompanying picture. He called the reporting "a fake thing" and said he would sue the newspaper if it printed the story. 'I never wrote a picture in my life. I don't draw pictures of women,' Trump told the newspaper. 'It's not my language. It's not my words.' Trump later confirmed his plans to seek legal action against the Wall Street Journal, its parent company News Corp and Rupert Murdoch, the organization's head, for publishing what he called a "defamatory" story. "The Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch, personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued. Mr. Murdoch stated that he would take care of it but, obviously, did not have the power to do so," Trump wrote on Truth Social. The Wall Street Journal did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Vice President JD Vance called the Journal's reporting "complete and utter bulls---" in a post on X and questioned the veracity of the letter the outlet claims was written by Trump. "Where is this letter? Would you be shocked to learn they never showed it to us before publishing it? Does anyone honestly believe this sounds like Donald Trump," he wrote. The Journal, citing people who have reviewed pages from the birthday album, said some of the pages were among the documents reviewed by the Justice Department during its investigations of Epstein and Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022. However, it's unclear if pages from the album were included in the Trump administration's most recent review of the case. In a separate Truth Social post Thursday night, Trump said he has directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to 'produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony' related to Epstein, 'subject to Court approval.' Bondi responded on social media saying, "President Trump—we are ready to move the court tomorrow to unseal the grand jury transcripts." When reached for comment, the Justice Department pointed to Bondi's post. The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Epstein was arrested in 2006 and charged with four counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and lewd and lascivious molestation. He was indicted in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. Epstein died by suicide in 2019 after being charged with one count of sex trafficking and another count of sex trafficking conspiracy. He was accused of seeking out minors for sex, some as young as 14. He faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted on the charges, which he pleaded not guilty to. For years, far right provocateurs, including FBI Director Kash Patel and his deputy, Dan Bongino, have promoted the notion that the Epstein case was part of a government cover-up to protect powerful political players and business elites involved in a a child abuse ring. Trump's denial comes amid a rare splintering of his base over a Justice Department memo outlining a decision to no longer disclose new information related to the federal investigation into Epstein and denying the existence of a purported "client list" of individuals that benefited from his crimes. As the backlash intensified this week, Trump on Wednesday chided his"past supporters" for buying into what he characterized as the "Jeffrey Epstein Hoax." "Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore," Trump wrote.

The issue came to a head last week when an amendment introduced by Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., to the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations bill — which would force funding for the new FBI HQ to be used only for a Greenbelt location — passed with the help of Murkowski's vote. The vote resulted in Republicans' defecting from the bill, putting its passage in jeopardy. As a result, the Appropriations Committee went into an extended recess to figure out a path that didn't result in the death of the entire bill.

Trump goes nuclear on Rupert Murdoch after his 'filthy rag' publishes letter to Epstein while calling for Bondi to clear his name
President Donald Trump has launched a nuclear attack on the Wall Street Journal for publishing extraordinary allegations about a salacious birthday card he allegedly sent disgraced billionaire Jeffrey Epstein. The report alleges Trump took part in a 50th birthday album by sending well wishes and a cryptic message on a card with a hand drawn naked woman. The outline of a naked woman with breasts and pubic hair drawn out of a 'Donald' signature allegedly frames typewritten text which reads: 'Happy Birthday - and may every day be another wonderful secret.' Within hours of the report's publication, Trump issued a scorched earth message via Truth Social insisting the letter was fake and vowing to sue the Journal, News Corp and Rupert Murdoch. He has also called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to 'produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval' in an effort to clear his name. Bondi instantly responded: 'President Trump - we are ready to move the court tomorrow to unseal the grand jury transcripts.' It comes after days of mounting fury among MAGA loyalists over Bondi and Trump's handling of the Epstein saga after they broke a campaign pledge to release the 'client list' and details about his death in a jail cell in 2019. Trump said he spoke directly with both the editor of the WSJ, Emma Tucker, and Murdoch himself about the contents of the letter they were citing. '[They] were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued,' Trump wrote. It is understood the letter forms part of the initial investigation into Epstein and Maxwell that the Justice Department conducted years ago, however it is unclear whether it was examined during Attorney General Pam Bondi's recent search. Bondi and Trump are both under immense pressure from MAGA loyalists after failing to deliver on a campaign promise to expose Epstein's client list and reveal the truth about his alleged suicide inside his cell in 2019 while awaiting trial for child sex trafficking charges. Bondi in February shared binders with MAGA influencers called 'Phase 1' of the Epstein release, but the folders contained previously published information. She assured the public at the time that the client list was 'on her desk to be reviewed' and that more bombshell information would soon follow. Last week, she backtracked and insisted the highly sought after client list 'doesn't exist.' She also said that Epstein killed himself in jail, and that there was no evidence to suggest he was murdered. The lack of new information has sparked mutiny among MAGA and deeply divided Trump's base. Trump on Wednesday lashed out at his own supporters and accused them of being duped by Democrats over the Epstein saga as he looks to shield himself and Bondi from backlash. 'Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bulls**t,' hook, line, and sinker,' Trump wrote Wednesday. 'They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years.' There is no evidence former Democratic officials tampered with the documents or played any role in promoting conspiracies about the files, which members of Trump's administration stoked for years. Elon Musk, Trump's former first buddy, has been among the loudest critics, unfollowing Bondi on X and describing her comments as 'the final straw.' Back in early June when he and Trump first fell out over the Big Beautiful Bill, Musk sensationally claimed on X that the president was 'in the Epstein files' and thus trying to delay their publication. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: [Trump] is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!',' he wrote, before ultimately deleting the post and apologizing. On July 8, Musk weighed in again, writing: 'How can people be expected to have faith in Trump if he won't release the Epstein files?'
