Burning Man Camp Needs Help To Bring Beloved Ski Slope Back in 2025

Yahoo8 hours ago
The state of Nevada is one of the most mountainous in the United States. With over 30 peaks topping over 10,000 feet in elevation, there are seemingly endless opportunities for backcountry skiing exploration. A group of passionate Burning Man festival-goers, however, brings simulated snow-sliding to the desert floor of Black Rock City each year. What started in 2023 as a "learning experience" has become one of Burning Man's most unique camps. Dubbed 'Lake Lahontan Ski Resort' after Black Rock City's dry lakebed, the slope is made of mats that simulate the feeling of sliding on snow. At 14-feet tall and stretching 62-feet long, the Lake Lahontan Ski Resort is just large enough to capture the thrill of skiing and snowboarding, if you use your imagination. The BRC Snow Club, which has hosted Lake Lahontan Ski Resort the last two Burning Man festivals, is making a return for 2025, but needs help from the community by way of fundraising. According to the GoFundMe created by BRC Snow Club organizer Dylan Hogan, The Lake Lahontan Ski Resort will be placed in a premiere zone called the 'Espalande' this year, which costs more. Storage and transportation of the dry slope costs $20,000 alone, according to the GoFundMe page. The fundraiser has brought in over $2,500 at time of publishing this article, by BRC Snow Club is aiming for at least $10k. If $15k-$20k is raised, BRC Snow Club will add "après-ski energy to the slope" with a speaker system, dance floor, generator, and lighting fixtures."We're still more than willing to do the heavy lifting, but now we're turning to our community in hopes that the spirit of communal effort will help carry us through," writes Hogan for BRC Snow Club's fundraiser.BRC Snow Club requested funds from the Burning Man Festival, but were denied as camps are ineligible for art grants. This came as a disappointment considering the festival used video clips from last year's Lake Lahontan Ski Resort to promote ticket sales for 2025."The Org posted a (very well-produced) video on their Instagram featuring interactivity at camps, which included footage of our slope," writes Hogan for the GoFundMe page. "Flattered and impressed by the quality of the video, we accepted. What we didn't realize (until the comments rolled in) was that the video was being used as an ADVERTISEMENT to sell tickets (did somebody say decommodification?) using our camp, our project, and our labor for THEIR profit... for an event we have to pay to attend and receive no compensation or support from."
Burning Man 2025 will take place from August 24-September 1, 2025. Here's hoping BRC Snow Club raises enough funds to make Lake Lahontan Ski Resort happen again. All of us here at POWDER are pulling for you!Burning Man Camp Needs Help To Bring Beloved Ski Slope Back in 2025 first appeared on Powder on Jul 28, 2025

James Cameron Teases Unexpected Animated Avatar Project

James Cameron wants to make an animated project. Cameron directed both films in the live-action Avatar franchise, 2009's Avatar and 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, thus far. The third movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is also directed by Cameron and arrives in United States theaters this coming December. What did James Cameron say about an animated Avatar project? Speaking with Empire Magazine, Cameron confirmed that he's spoken to Disney, which owns 20th Century Studios, about potentially doing an Avatar animated project. He explained, 'I said, 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world.' There might even be an animated feature in there – it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature. A good early example is The Animatrix, where they went afield in the Matrix world. These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar.' Cameron further noted that these animated stories could explore 'backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.' The project, however, hasn't yet materialized into anything. 'We haven't done much with that yet,' Cameron said. 'We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing, and I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.' In the meantime, Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives on December 19, 2025. It stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge, Kate Winslet as Ronal, Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, Joel David Moore as Dr. Norm Spellman, Edi Falco as General Frances Ardmore, and more. Congratulations on a huge 2025. You released your 10th anniversary reunion album and toured Asia with GFRIEND. Now, VIVIZ has released your first full-length and is adding America to the world tour. What has 2025 represented to you? EUNHA: If we think about it, 10 years does sound really amazing but I don't think that there are any significant changes. We're still working as hard as we always have, every single time! SINB: I think it's a year where we keep getting better constantly. We've finally released the long-awaited full album and are going on our second world tour, so we'll just keep getting better! UMJI: 2025 seems like the year where we get to do important projects. GFRIEND's 10th anniversary album and performances, VIVIZ's first full album and world tour. It's a year where we're doing something that's both familiar to us yet is also a new challenge. Jeff Benjamin: Why was now the right time for VIVIZ to release your full-length album A Montage of ( )? UMJI: I think this is the time when the more we keep our possibilities open, the more we grow. So, since this is a full-length album, it felt like a perfect opportunity for each member to have their own solo song where they can showcase their individual charm. Jeff Benjamin: Right, it was really exciting to see your own solo songs on this album. Can you each introduce yours? EUNHA: I'll say 'Milky Way' is my first self-written and self-produced song! I included my favorite elements in this track, so I think it's a really EUNHA-esque song! I think it's the song that feels the most like me. SINB: Out of all the songs on this album, 'Hipnotic' has the strongest beat. It's the only song on the album that has rap in it and the contrast of that strong beat with my soft voice is a highlight that you can pay attention to while listening. Also, the song is accompanied by a powerful performance; I hope you'll like it. UMJI: Compared to other members' solo songs, my track, 'Love Language,' has longer flows and the beat is not as fast, but it has plenty of highlights to keep it interesting. It's a song that carries its charm all the way to the end, I hope you'll like it. It's a groovy song that makes you want to sway along with it. Jeff Benjamin: How will you elevate NEW LEGACY from your previous world tour? SINB: I think the show has become 'richer' compared to our last tour. With a variety of performances that keep your eyes glued to the stage, it feels more intense than before. SINB: We have prepared a show where just us three, VIVIZ, will totally fill the stage. I think you have no other choice but to fall in love with it! Jeff Benjamin: What else should fans look forward to in the second half of 2025? UMJI: No matter where and no matter what we do, I want to keep things fun for our fans by showing a variety of different sides of us! Personally, I would also like to release at least a single in the second half of the year. Jeff Benjamin: With 2025 marking 10 years for you three in the industry, what are the most significant changes you have seen in K-pop from 2015? EUNHA: I think the biggest change is the amount of love and interest that K-pop receives globally these days. I feel truly proud that not just K-pop, but Korean culture as a whole, is gaining so much recognition. Jeff Benjamin: Now, what are the biggest changes you've seen in one another from 2015 to 2025? EUNHA: UMJI originally has a delicate personality, I think that she's grown even deeper and become an amazing adult. As for SINB, she has been the number one dancer for more than 10 years, so I think her joints have changed — I'm concerned. SINB: First, the biggest change when it comes to EUNHA is that she could be considered part of the dance line now, that's for sure! As for UMJI, she has become more relaxed and confident, I think? UMJI: When I first met EUNHA, I thought she was the type who barely talks but now she chatters a lot like a sparrow. As for SINB, she still has this mischievous side, but compared to when we were young, we get to see more of her mature and calm side. Jeff Benjamin: Anything else to add for fans waiting for you? EUNHA: Na.V! We missed you a lot! Hope you guys like this album and see you on tour! Please stay healthy! SINB: Na.V! I'm so happy that we get to meet Na.V from many countries. Please wait a little bit until we can spend a great time together and listen to our first full album while waiting!! UMJI: Na.V! Thank you for always sending us love and affection. I'll keep working hard to become a singer who is worthy of your expectations! Let's make a lot of good memories this year too! 2025 VIVIZ WORLD TOUR NEW LEGACY in North America September 3 - Atlanta, GA September 4 - Charlotte, NC September 6 - Philadelphia, PA September 7 - New York City, NY September 9 - Boston, MA September 11 - Montreal, QC September 14 - Toronto, ON September 16 - Columbus, OH September 17 - Detroit, MI September 18 - Chicago, IL September 20 - Minneapolis, MN September 22 - Kansas City, KS September 25 - Dallas, TX September 26 - Houston, TX September 28 - San Antonio, TX September 30 - Phoenix, AZ October 2 - Los Angeles, CA 2025 VIVIZ WORLD TOUR NEW LEGACY began in Seoul, South Korea on July 5, 2025, and will visit North America in September and October 2025.
