Fifa announces special transfer window for Club World Cup teams
PARIS - Fifa announced on May 21 the creation of a transfer window running from June 1 to 10 for all teams competing in this summer's revamped Club World Cup.
'All 20 Member Associations whose clubs will participate in Fifa's groundbreaking competition have confirmed the opening of an exceptional registration window from June 1 to 10 for all their affiliated clubs to allow new players signed to compete in the tournament,' football's global governing body said in a statement.
Fifa further announced an additional in-competition transfer window, which will be open from June 27 to July 3.
'The objective is to encourage clubs and players whose contracts are expiring to find an appropriate solution to facilitate the players' participation,' added Fifa.
'This will ensure that the best players will be playing, allowing clubs to add new recruits even during the tournament.'
The 2025 Club World Cup will feature 32 teams from across the globe and runs from June 14 to July 13 in the United States. AFP

The point is, Scottie, you are simply the best
Find out what's new on ST website and app. Golf - The 153rd Open Championship - Royal Portrush Golf Club, Portrush, Northern Ireland, Britain - July 20, 2025 Scottie Scheffler of the U.S. celebrates on the 18th green after winning The 153rd Open Championship REUTERS/Paul Childs PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland - Scottie Scheffler created waves before the British Open when he questioned the meaning of his success in a press conference, repeatedly asking what was the point of his relentless pursuit of golfing glory. After cruising to a four-shot victory at Royal Portrush on Sunday, the world number one American pumped his fists in celebration. "Thanks to the fans for all the support," Scheffler said after lifting the Claret Jug. "I know I wasn't the fan favourite today so I appreciate you guys coming out to support. Overall, it's been a great week, the fan support was tremendous. It was a really fun week to be able to play in front of such a great crowd." Scheffler's son Bennett fell over as he tried to run to his dad on the green before the British Open champion scooped him up and held him alongside the trophy. "Thanks to my wife and son - I love you very much and can't wait to get home and celebrate," Scheffler said. "To my parents and the rest of the team, I can't thank you guys enough. I've got the best support team. Everyone does such a great job of working together." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Three early birdies sent him seven shots clear and even when he double-bogeyed the eighth hole, failing to escape from a bunker at the first attempt, there was no panic. NERVELESS PUTT Scheffler birdied the ninth with a five-foot putt, reverted to his risk-free strategy and picked up another shot at the 12th with a nerveless eight-footer. Six pars followed and he finished the week with only three bogeys alongside his late double. Watching him celebrate his victory, it was hard not to think about his pre-tournament comments. "This is not a fulfilling life," he said. "It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart," the 29-year-old said. Scheffler has dominated golf since 2022. He won the Masters in 2022 and 2024, and the Olympic gold medal last year as whispers in golf have likened his dominance to that of 15-times major champion Tiger Woods in his prime. His rivals are in no doubt about his quality. "I played with him the first two days, and honestly I thought he was going to birdie every hole," 2019 Portrush Open champion Shane Lowry said. "It was incredible to watch." American Bryson DeChambeau, the twice U.S. Open champion who finished tied 10th at Portrush, played against Scheffler many times during their youth. "I knew at college he was going to be a good player, but not this good. He's setting a benchmark we all want to get to," DeChambeau said. "Scottie's in a league of his own right now. He's incredible. He really is. "I don't think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon, and here's Scottie sort of taking that throne." REUTERS

Patience the name of the game for AC Milan fans awaiting their heroes' arrival in Singapore
Find out what's new on ST website and app. AC Milan's Rafael Leao signing autographs for fans at the Conrad Singapore Marina Bay hotel on July 20, 2025, after arriving with the team just before midnight. SINGAPORE – There was a quiet atmosphere in the lobby of Conrad Singapore Marina Bay hotel on July 20 as AC Milan fans, both local and foreign, loitered within the premises, patiently awaiting the arrival of their heroes from Italy. That wait was stretched even longer as the team experienced some travel delays, which meant they missed the expected 10pm arrival time at the hotel. However, as the minutes crept by, the energy in the hotel increased exponentially as the group of about 35 fans gathered as one just outside the sliding door entrance, barricaded by wooden fences at chest height. When the Milan team bus finally pulled up at 11.40pm, the fans surprisingly didn't make much of a ruckus, patiently waiting for the players to appear one by one before politely asking for autographs on their jerseys and scarves. Kemal Firdaus, who flew in from Indonesia in the morning, brought a big haversack of jerseys with each player's name printed on the back. 'I bring one jersey for one player. If I don't have AC Milan jersey, I buy the national jersey,' said Kemal, who has been supporting the Rossoneri since 1998. The 33-year-old, who had been waiting at the hotel since 7pm, will be at the National Stadium as coach Massimiliano Allegri leads his team out against Mikel Arteta's Arsenal in the Singapore Festival of Football on July 23. ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG Like the other fans, he clamoured for star players such as Rafael Leao, Mike Maignan and Fikayo Tomori. Notable absentees include Santiago Giminez who signed in January as well as new signing Luka Modric, who were excluded from the squad following their efforts in the Gold Cup and Club World Cup respectively. But fans whom The Straits Times spoke to were not too disappointed that Modric, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, is not here. Johnson Foo, who has been supporting the Rossoneri since 1990, was at the hotel with his wife and son, all wearing Milan's new home jersey. 'I'm just super thrilled that they are coming here on tour and play a match. I've been supporting them since 1990 and they have never come to Singapore (until now),' said the 45-year-old. 'So this is a perfect opportunity for me to meet them. 'I bought tickets for all my family. I bought jerseys for them. We are all geared up for the match on Wednesday.' Fulvio Manini, a Milan fan who has been living in Singapore since 1998 for work, further highlighted the joys of watching the team play live. The 62-year-old Italian said: 'I used to watch them regularly back then at San Siro. Not so much (now). Three o'clock in the morning is a bit too late. 'It's always good to see your team live. Better than watching on TV.' Bernardo Corradi, a member of the AC Milan coaching staff, signing autographs for fans at the Conrad Singapore Marina Bay hotel after arriving in Singapore on July 20, 2025. ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG Despite suffering from jet lag and hunger, Milan centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic said he was 'excited to be here'. 'We're really happy. So far, we had two weeks (of) pre-season. We worked really hard. Now it's time to start playing games,' said the 24-year-old Serb. After the match against the Gunners, the 19-time Italian champions will continue their pre-season tour in Hong Kong and Australia where they will face off against Liverpool (July 26) and Perth Glory (July 31) respectively.

Supreme Scheffler a class apart as he romps to first Open title
Golf - The 153rd Open Championship - Royal Portrush Golf Club, Portrush, Northern Ireland, Britain - July 20, 2025 Scottie Scheffler of the U.S. putts on the 10th green during the final round REUTERS/Maja Smiejkowska PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland - A relentless Scottie Scheffler sealed his first British Open triumph by four shots as he turned the final day of the tournament into a procession at Royal Portrush on Sunday. The 29-year-old American world number one started out with a four-stroke lead and apart from one blip, never looked like relinquishing his grip as the chasing pack were reduced to scrapping for the minor places. Scheffler barely put a foot wrong all week on the glorious Causeway Coast, rekindling memories of 15-times major winner Tiger Woods in his pomp, and he rubber-stamped his fourth major title with a clinical final-round 68. Take the dominant Scheffler out of the equation and the 153rd Open would have been a thriller with the leaderboard underneath him chopping and changing all weekend. In the end, Harris English was the best of the rest on 13 under after a final-round 66 with fellow American Chris Gotterup a further shot back. Huge galleries thronged the course and thousands arrived hoping see a Rory McIlroy miracle on the final day. But Northern Ireland's favourite sporting son, who began six shots behind Scheffler, was unable to mount a charge and ended up in a tie for seventh on 10 under. Top stories Swipe. Select. Scheffler has now completed three legs of his career Grand Slam and needs a U.S. Open crown to complete the set. He also became the first current world number one to lift the Claret Jug since Tiger Woods in 2006. Those hoping to witness a battle royal for golf's oldest major should probably have known better. On the last nine occasions Scheffler had gone into the final round of a PGA Tour event leading, he emerged victorious, while his three previous major wins also arrived after a 54-hole lead. When he birdied the first, fourth and fifth holes to move eight strokes clear the only question seemed to be whether he could set an Open record for a winning margin. Even when errors did creep in, he simply rolled in long par-saving putts on the sixth and seventh holes to crush the spirit of those hoping for an unlikely collapse. Only when he double-bogeyed the eighth after failing to get out of a bunker did Scheffler look like a mere mortal, his lead suddenly sliced to four strokes. But it proved false hope for those pursuing a giant of golf, and a birdie at the ninth and another at the 12th hole steadied the ship and all that needed deciding then was who would come second.
