Video game preview – Anno 117: Pax Romana is a real-time city-building epic
When I had a chance to preview Ubisoft's Anno 117: Pax Romana, I did not know what to expect aside from it being a historical strategy game, but with a more focused era. I was expecting something Civ-ish, but I was wrong.
Anno 117 is different to anything I've played before. The coming PC game puts players in the role of a new Roman governor during a relatively peaceful 200-year span.
Players start with a single settlement, but they'll have to expand and build a network of eternal cities. They'll start in Latium – the area around Rome in today's west-central Italy – with a Mediterranean climate and ruins from the past.

Further into the game, the governor's domain expands to Albion, a different environment with harsh cliffs, misty marshland and a new culture.

Uffizi Gallery painting damaged by selfie-taking tourist
A visitor at the Uffizi Gallery in the Italian city of Florence accidentally damaged a valuable oil painting while trying to take a selfie. The unidentified tourist leaned against Anton Domenico Gabbiani's Baroque portrait of Ferdinando de' Medici, who was the grand prince of Tuscany, to take a photo – until the canvas gave way. Italian broadcaster TG1 posted a video on X, which shows the painting's canvas tearing under the man's weight. The painting is considered one of the highlights of the current exhibition. The man was identified by museum staff and reported to the police. The museum management said that the damage was minor, however, and could be repaired. The painting was immediately removed for restoration.

Rich guys' ostentatious weddings are reflection of human condition

The world's occasionally wealthiest man, Jeff Bezos, and former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez reportedly splashed out US$55 million for their nuptials, which effectively allowed the couple and their 200 rich and famous guests to take over half the city. No wonder many locals and eat-the-rich types were up in arms. The Venice Marco Polo airport was jammed by private jets. Local caterers and servers were made to sign non-disclosure agreements, barring them from discussing publicly whatever they witnessed at those parties. An army of private security guards was deployed. Advertisement The couple originally chose the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, a Renaissance landmark and cultural hub, to hold the main event. But there were so many complaints and protests that a minor concession was made to move everyone to the more secluded Arsenale Di Venezia, protected by a moat and a drawbridge, better to shield them from the rabble. It was perhaps poor timing that the wedding was held amid anti-tourism rallies in multiple European cities. Bezos and his better-or-worse half helped the protesters make their point.
