Saudi math team wins 4 awards at European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad
The April 11-17 competition, hosted this year in Pristina, Kosovo, featured 217 female students representing 56 countries.
All four Saudi contestants won awards, with Fatimah Buali capturing a silver medal, Sarah Aljughayman winning a bronze, and Retaj Alsaleh and Albatool Alaidarous both garnering an honorable mention, according to the EGMO site.
The latest score has raised the Kingdom's medals tally in the annual competition to 36 awards, including 2 gold medals, 7 silver medals, 15 bronze medals, and 12 certificates of appreciation.
The Kingdom was represented by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), which screens and prepares Saudi children in international scientific competitions and Olympiads.
Saudi Arabia is among the non-European countries that have regularly participated in annual EGMO event, which started in 2012. Among the other regular participants are Japan, China, Australia, Brazil and the United States.

'Nafath' app for biometric identity verification 'My Resume' service within the 'Tawakkalna' app that enables users to display their certified academic qualifications 'Tahseen' an AI-powered project that can restore and boost historical media 'Allam' and 'SauTech' projects which support and process Arabic through large language models and speech recognition technologies Prestigious Recognition Apart from this, the WSIS recognized the IAIO as an unparalleled project in Category 7 (E-Science). This recognition reflects the ongoing efforts of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) to boost innovation and elevate national and international capacities of the artificial intelligence. In collaboration with the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), AI Olympiad featured participants from more than 25 countries around the world. Saudi communications minister urges decisive action, global cooperation to address AI divide
GENEVA: Saudi Arabia's minister of communications and IT has called for 'decisive international collaboration' to address the inequality in computing infrastructure that could leave other nations behind in this era of artificial intelligence. In a keynote address at the 160th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva, Minister Abdullah Al-Swaha cited the 'concentration of computing power in a few regions, the lack of AI infrastructure in many countries, and the limited participation of the Global South in shaping governance frameworks and regulatory policies.' 'Today, the world faces an 'existential gap' due to alarming disparities in access to AI technologies,' the minister said, according to the Saudi Press Agency. Alswaha said the world could learn lessons from the past phases of technological transformation: the analog era, which took over a century to connect 800 million people, and the digital era, which linked 5.5 billion individuals in just 50 years but still left 2.6 billion unconnected. In the AI era, he said, current gaps exist in computing infrastructure, data availability, and algorithms that could slow the advances needed to support human progress. Al-Swaha reiterated Saudi Arabia's 'unwavering commitment' to support and lead international efforts to close the emerging technological divides. He highlighted Saudi Arabia's efforts to address these gaps, citing the digital empowerment of women in the Kingdom — who now have a participation rate of about 35 percent — and the Kingdom's top global rankings in digital competitiveness for two consecutive years. He also noted that researchers at Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) rank among the top one percent globally in scientific citations, offering hope for the future of AI. He likewise underlined the Kingdom's progress in data protection regulations and the development of 'language models that promote inclusive access to technology for diverse communities.' Al-Swaha further cited the HUMAIN project launched by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman "to provide the full spectrum of AI capabilities, from advanced processors to top talent, and to position the Kingdom as a global AI pioneer." 'The Kingdom's efforts are a direct response to urgent global challenges,' he said. Al-Swaha emphasized that the next 10 years will be critical for bridging the divides. He called for multination 'partnerships under the umbrella of the ITU to build a fair, safe, and inclusive AI ecosystem that supports sustainable development and enhances human well-being.'

Saudi Arabia's Mawhiba program empowers female students in Yanbu
RIYADH: Mawhiba's Academic Enrichment Program continues in Yanbu Industrial City on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, SPA reports. The program, which is implemented by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, also known as Mawhiba, has targeted a select group of talented female students in various scientific and cognitive fields. According to SPA, the program is part of Mawhiba's efforts to support gifted men and women, and integrates specialized scientific content, practical application and personal and leadership skills development in a stimulating learning environment. Some 95 female students participating in the program are receiving rich scientific content in tracks that include inventions, chemistry and engineering design, in addition to developing thinking, innovation and entrepreneurship skills, under the supervision of a select group of qualified female trainers. The program's activities include scientific visits, applied workshops and mini exhibitions, featuring active interaction from students and parents. Scientific and creative outputs will conclude the event, showcasing the efforts of the students and education team, which contributes to the discovery, development and support of talents in the field of excellence and creativity, SPA reports.
