Tajikistan's apricot farmers grapple with climate change

Tajik apricot farmer Uktam Kuziev is worried about the future now that climate change is threatening Central Asia's vital fruit harvest. This is one of the world's most exposed regions to the effects of climate change and its poor, rural farming communities are particularly vulnerable. Kuziev is one of more than 100,000 people employed in Tajikistan's apricot industry, a historic occupation across the mountains and valleys in the north of the landlocked country.
Ten percent of all the world's orchards are located here, according to United Nations data. But mild winters, melting glaciers, late frosts and water scarcity all pose challenges to cultivation in Tajikistan's apricot capital of Isfara. 'Last year, some land turned desert-like due to lack of water and the soil cracked into pieces,' Kuziev told AFP.
'The apricot trees dried up because they weren't watered,' the 72-year-old farmer said, standing in front of stubby apricot trees swaying in the wind. The fruit is 'especially vulnerable' to climate change, according to the World Bank, due to 'escalating temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns and increased frequency of extreme weather events'.

Water shortages
At street markets in Isfara, vendors sell buckets of fresh apricots next to piles of glistening red cherries, while on roadsides dried fruits are sold from giant sandbags. Tajikistan classifies the fruit as a 'strategic product' with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. 'Apricot cultivation in northern Tajikistan is very important economically and socially... It creates jobs and improves the standard of living of the population,' Muminjon Makhmajonov, deputy director of Isfara Food, a major dried fruit producer, told AFP.
So important is the furry orange fruit to the local economy that a giant monument to it has been erected in the middle of Isfara city. But chronic water shortages and shrinking levels in the Isfara river -- shared by Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan -- are disrupting both the industry and a way of life.
'The effects of climate change and the melting of the glaciers are already being felt. In spring the water level in the Isfara river is low,' Bakhtior Jalilov, the city's chief agriculture specialist, told AFP. Facing water shortages every spring, Kuziev has previously sacrificed wheat crops to 'save the essentials -- the apricot trees'.
A lack of water is not the only problem faced by farmers. Paradoxically, bouts of heavy rainfall are also an issue, causing the fruit to grow with thorns or spots on its skin, which reduces its market value.
Frosts
'We are sad when it rains a lot because it spoils the product,' said Muborak Isoeva, 61, who sells apricots in the neighboring village of Kulkand. Drastic temperature swings pose another problem. The devastation of Turkey's 2025 apricot harvest by cold weather has worried Tajikistan's farmers. 'When the temperature rises or falls sharply, even for a day or two, you won't get the harvest you want,' Makhmajonov said.
He buys supplies in the markets around Isfara, where small-scale farmers sell apricots grown in their gardens to make a living. Whereas before locals had no idea of the concept of a late frost, 'over the last 20 years, the trees have frozen over five or six times during or after blooming', city specialist Jalilov said.
Adaptation
Producers and the local administration are trying to adapt. Orchards are being planted more intensively, while some 1,500 hectares of soil on low-yielding plots of land has been regenerated over the last five years.
Some are switching to growing plums, more resilient to the changing climate. 'Unlike apricots, plums bloom a little later and tolerate heat and cold better... so when the apricot harvest is poor, we can still export prunes,' said Isfara Food's Makhmajonov.
He has installed a water-efficient drip irrigation system to grow the sweet purple fruit. But not everybody has that option. Water fees were hiked 150 percent last year -- something Tajikistan said was necessary to improve infrastructure and balance usage from the river across the three countries. With an average national salary of just $260 a month, adaptation is both costly and complex for family farmers, who have for decades relied on the fruit to boost their incomes.
'Regardless of their standard of living or social status, if they need money, they could go and sell them at the market,' Makhmajonov said. Climate change is now making that safety net look increasingly fragile.—AFP

SHANGHAI: Shanghai has evacuated almost 283,000 people from vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas as Typhoon Co-May made landfall in the Chinese financial hub on Wednesday evening, bringing lashing rains and winds. Almost a third of flights from Shanghai's two international airports have been cancelled, the city's news service said, totaling around 640. The Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory upgraded an earlier yellow rainstorm alert to orange on Wednesday afternoon, the second-highest warning level. Typhoon Co-May first made landfall in eastern Zhejiang province around 4:30 am Wednesday (2030 GMT Tuesday), with winds near its center of 83 kilometers (52 miles) per hour. 'From last night to 10:00 am today, 282,800 people have been evacuated and relocated, basically achieving the goal of evacuating all those who needed to be evacuated,' state broadcaster CCTV reported. More than 1,900 temporary shelters have been set up across the city, authorities said. In a village on the outskirts of Shanghai on Wednesday evening, one such shelter—a large hall filled with dozens of iron beds—was mostly occupied by elderly people, AFP reporters saw. Around 20 people sat on beds or gathered around tables to eat dinner, along with local community staff. Sheets of rain inundated the city without pause on Wednesday, with pedestrians bracing their umbrellas against gusts and delivery drivers splashing through huge puddles as they made their way through sodden streets. Ferry services have been cancelled, additional speed limits are in place on highways, and there has been some disruption to metro and train services. However, Shanghai's Legoland and Disneyland remained open on Wednesday morning. As the typhoon tracked northwest after making landfall in the morning, live shots from China's eastern coast showed waves overrunning seaside walkways, while broadcasts from the city of Ningbo showed residents wading through ankle-deep water. Separately, China issued a tsunami warning for parts of the eastern seaboard after a magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. However, the warning was later lifted, according to CCTV. Co-May was downgraded to a tropical storm before leaving the Philippines, and then strengthened again over the South China Sea. Its passage has had an indirect link to extreme weather in northern China, Chen Tao, chief forecaster at the National Meteorological Center, told the state-run China Daily. Heavy rain there has killed more than 30 people and forced authorities to evacuate tens of thousands, state media reported Tuesday. 'Typhoon activity can influence atmospheric circulation... thereby altering the northward transport of moisture,' Chen said. MIYUN: Heavy rain killed more than 30 people and forced authorities to evacuate tens of thousands as swaths of northern China were lashed by torrential downpours that sparked landslides and flooding, state media said Tuesday. Weather authorities have issued their second-highest rainstorm warning for the capital Beijing, neighboring Hebei and Tianjin, as well as 10 other provinces, state news agency Xinhua said. The rains are expected to last into Wednesday. The heavy rainstorms had left 30 people dead in Beijing as of midnight Monday, Xinhua said, citing flood control authorities. More than 80,000 people have been evacuated in the capital alone, according to state-run Beijing Daily. The death toll was highest in Miyun, a northeastern suburb, it said. 'This time the rain was unusually heavy, it's not normally like this,' a Miyun resident surnamed Jiang told AFP as water streamed down the road outside her house. 'The road is full of water so people aren't going to work,' she said. In Xinanzhuang village, AFP journalists saw murky water had submerged homes, cars and a road. A local man in his sixties said he had never seen water levels so high. Nearby, torrents of water gushed from spillways in the Miyun Reservoir, which authorities said reached its highest levels since its construction in 1959. Beijing's northern Huairou district and southwestern Fangshan were also badly affected, state media said. Dozens of roads have been closed and over 130 villages have lost electricity, Beijing Daily said. Iraq's 46 million people face rising temperatures, chronic water shortages and year-on-year droughts, in a country intensely impacted by the effects of climate change. Summer temperatures often climb to 52C, especially in July and August. On central Baghdad's bustling streets on Monday, people sought respite from the sweltering heat in front of swirling mist fans set up near restaurants and shops. Some pedestrians drenched their faces with cold water purchased from sidewalk vendors, while drivers had to pull over to the roadside to cool down their engines. The national weather service said the temperature reached 51C in Baghdad and in areas to the capital's southeast, from the central Wasit province to Dhi Qar, Missan and Basra in the south. Another eight provinces hit 50C on Monday, with temperatures expected to drop slightly on Wednesday, according to the official Iraq News Agency. In recent years, Iraqis rallied every summer to protest regular power cuts and water shortages that plague their daily lives. Hundreds of people protested on Friday and Sunday near the cities of Hilla and Diwaniyah, south of Baghdad, blocking roads and burning tires. Iraq's water resources ministry has said that 'this year is one of the driest since 1933', and that water reserve are down to only eight percent of their full capacity.
