India's tyre exports rise 9% to ₹25,051 cr in FY25 despite global headwinds
With nearly 40 per cent of the industry's natural rubber (NR) requirement met through imports due to limited domestic availability, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) said there is an urgent need to accelerate domestic production through focused interventions to meet rising demand.
India's tyre exports in 2024-25 increased by 9 per cent year-on-year, reaching Rs 25,051 crore compared to Rs 23,073 crore in the previous fiscal, ATMA said, citing data released by the Ministry of Commerce.
With an estimated annual turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore and exports exceeding Rs 25,000 crore, the Indian tyre industry stands out as one of the few manufacturing sectors in the country with a high export-to-turnover ratio, it added.
"The tyre industry has exhibited remarkable resilience and growth post the COVID-19 downturn. Over the past 3-4 years, tyre manufacturers have invested approximately Rs 27,000 crore across greenfield and brownfield projects, underscoring their strong belief in India's economic trajectory," ATMA Chairman Arun Mammen said.
ATMA said Indian tyres are exported to over 170 countries, with a significant presence in the US, Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The US remains the top export market, accounting for 17 per cent of exports by value, followed by Germany (6 per cent), Brazil (5 per cent), the UAE (4 per cent), and France (4 per cent).
Segment-wise, farm/agricultural tyres and off-the-road (OTR) tyres dominate, together comprising nearly 60 per cent of the total tyre export value, it added.
While India has significant potential to further enhance tyre exports through competitive pricing, quality assurance, branding initiatives, and greater alignment with international certifications and standards, ATMA said, ensuring adequate access to NR remains a critical prerequisite for scaling up production and exports.
"Currently, nearly 40 per cent of the industry's NR requirement is met through imports due to limited domestic availability. Most of the domestically produced NR is absorbed by domestic consumers, leaving negligible volumes for export," it said.
Mammen said India's tyre industry is unique in its heavy reliance on NR, which is a sustainable material. While globally, synthetic rubber makes up 60 per cent of tyre industry consumption, in India, 60 per cent of the rubber used is NR.
"There is an urgent need to accelerate domestic NR production through focused interventions to meet the rising demand...which is expected to touch 20 lakh tonnes by 2030," he asserted.
To address the gap, ATMA said the tyre industry, under the guidance of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has partnered with the Rubber Board of India to launch Project INROAD.
Backed by Rs 1,100 crore in funding from four leading ATMA member companies, the project aims to bring 2 lakh hectares under NR plantation while also providing infrastructure and skilling support in India's rubber-growing regions, it added.
Despite these efforts, much more needs to be done to meet future NR demand, Mammen noted.

Pradhan lays stress on coordinated efforts to scale up prodn of Koraput coffee
1 2 Koraput: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday visited the Coffee Board's regional office in Koraput to take stock of the region's growing coffee economy. Walking through the thriving plantations and interacting with officials and tribal women farmers from self-help groups (SHGs), Pradhan praised the region's potential in producing premium-quality coffee and stressed the need for coordinated efforts to scale up production, improve post-harvest processes and build a strong brand identity. "Koraput coffee is not just gaining recognition, it is becoming a profitable and sustainable livelihood for tribal farmers. With proper branding and quality enhancement, we can place Koraput on the world coffee map," the minister said. Koraput collector Keerthi Vasan V said that nearly 7,000 hectares across blocks like Semiliguda, Dashmantpur, Laxmipur, Pottangi and Lamtaput are under coffee cultivation, largely managed by tribal women through SHGs. These plantations yield close to 600 tonnes of coffee annually, translating to a market value of approximately Rs 30 crore, based on current prices. "It will be scaled up further, with plans to add 800 hectares of new coffee plantations and implement shade plantations over 4,000 hectares in 2025-26," the collector said. Officials said more SHGs will be roped in for processing activities to enhance production and ensure better retail presence. Branding efforts are also being intensified, highlighting Koraput's organically grown, high-altitude coffee as a unique product with heritage value. Senior liaison officer of the Coffee Board, Upendra Kumar Saha, briefed the minister on cultivation practices and market trends. Pradhan assured support for infrastructure upgrades and market linkages, affirming the Centre's commitment to promote tribal enterprise. "Koraput coffee is not just a product, it's a symbol of pride, tradition and economic transformation," Sujay Pradhan, vice-president of the Odisha Coffee Growers Association, said. "With national and international attention, it has the potential to become a global movement," he added.

Remove Ads New Delhi: Private investment stayed flat in the last three-six months as companies are finding it challenging to envisage manufacturing amid an uncertain tariff structure, though it is currently seeing a revival in line with an improvement in the demand environment , said Rajiv Memani, president, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)."I won't say it has gone down, but it is kind of flat in the last three to six months. But we can see an acceleration happening as the demand environment picks up especially with the interest rate reduction," Memani told ET, adding that land and environment approvals should also be firms announced new projects worth ₹3.5 lakh crore in the quarter ended June, sharply rising from ₹1.4 lakh crore a year earlier, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy. However, it was the lowest level of private investments in four quarters. On urban consumption, Memani said there is some slowdown, especially in the lower-to-middle-income noted that India previously used to take a long time for inking free trade agreements (FTA) with the West. That scenario has changed, with all nations including India presently evaluating trade pacts with trusted partners."I think it's a positive change, but it is a big change. We are signing up with large countries where we have complementarity of with countries we are competing with," said Memani, adding such pacts also create a bigger market opportunity besides generating interest from micro, small and medium issues that India should be wary of while negotiating FTAs with developed countries, he said, "You have to be trusting and verifying go in step by step rather than trying to boil the ocean in one go."Insisting that India has to create efficiency by unleashing further reforms on land, logistics, energy, and labour productivity, even at the state level, he also called for more investments in R&D. "We need to act with more speed and look at either reforms and allocations towards R&D and also some of the production linked incentive (PLI) schemes or schemes like PLI which require some initial support," Memani how the industry is preparing to deal with shocks such as China suspending rare earth exports, he said companies are reducing their financial risks, taking lesser debt, and relying more on industry chamber is assessing the extent of India's reliance on global supply chains. Citing the instance of compressors, Memani said the critical parts are imported and that CII is engaging with the government on ways to address the issue and areas where PLI support is has recently recalled its engineers and technicians from the Indian factories of Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant Foxconn and Memani said the Centre has been cautioning the local industry that such things can happen, urging it to be prepared. The government, he noted, has been proactive and offered PLI said CII's suggestions on goods and services tax (GST) reforms include rate rationalisation and slab structuring, subsuming all taxes in the overarching framework and input tax credit which impact industry competitiveness. "I think it's very important that we find ways and means to bolster the income and resilience of the bottom 30%," Memani reform pertains to assessment audit processes wherein states have their own separate audits with each raising different issues and asking different sets of information. "What we have recommended is that there should be a standard operating procedure. Secondly, can we just do the audit once at least for the MSMEs. So these are newer issues that are coming up," he said. The last GST reform is technology-linked where for smaller companies, CII has recommended lesser compliances."Within some sectors, there are areas where we have dependencies in industry is trying to see how the gross value add can improve. So if you look at electronics, how can you bring it up to late 20% or early 30% in the next five-six years," Memani said, pointing to disabilities in certain sectors. The CII has set up an AI Centre of Excellence to help companies become more efficient. "We are seeing early signs in some industries-information technology and financial services. I think there is a clear need that India should be the AI capital of the world," said Memani.
