Europe's Crackdown on Speech Goes Far and Wide

Lucy Connolly, a 41-year-old nanny in central England, has been in jail now for more than 330 days because of a message she posted on X.
Last July, Connolly was at her home, where she runs a small daycare, when news broke that three girls in the town of Southport—aged 6, 7 and 9—were murdered by a knife-wielding man at a dance workshop.

Iran Threat to Dissidents in UK Has Jumped, Lawmaker Panel Says

The threat posed by Iran to dissidents living in the UK has significantly increased in recent years, according to an influential panel of lawmakers who urged the British government to bolster cyber resilience and espionage capacity. From 2022 to August 2023, there were at least 15 attempts to murder or kidnap British nationals or UK-based individuals, Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee warned Thursday in a key report. The panel warned that the risk of Iran carrying out physical attacks on individuals in Britain is now at its greatest level ever, and is comparable to the threat posed by Russia.

Peshman Ahmedi, 22, was arrested at the Port of Dover on Tuesday evening following a large police operation in Kent and has now been charged with murder, the force said on Thursday. In an earlier tribute, Mr Hayward's family described the victim as 'a beautiful soul with the kindest of hearts' and 'a much-loved son, grandson and brother'. Ahmedi, of no fixed address, will appear in custody at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Former apartheid cop gets 15 years for 1987 murder of Caiphus Nyoka

Johan Marais, the former apartheid cop who pleaded guilty to the 1987 murder of student activist Caiphus Nyoka, has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars. Marais, 66, appeared in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Thursday, more than 37 years after he gunned down Nyoka on 23 August 1987 in Daveyton, Gauteng. Marais, who pleaded guilty to the crime, said he was given an order to assassinate Nyoka. Judge Mokhine Mosopa said his sentence had to fit the punishment and serve as a deterrent and retribution.
