Champaign Co. Children's Advocacy Center holds open house for Child Abuse Awareness Month
The center held an open house Friday to get the word out about their efforts to protect kids. It has been helping children for four decades. They took the opportunity to refresh people on their vital services at the open house.

'Teachers, law enforcement, DCFS, all those those groups,' said CAC's deputy administrator, Elizabeth Lebs. 'We want them to know that we're here and remind them that we want to support them.'She has always wanted to help children, and said she found her perfect fit at the center.'I was really inspired to work with kids. I kind of have taken a roundabout path to get here,' she said. 'I was a teacher for a little bit. I did a few different things, but my passion has always been supporting kids and family.'CAC's executive director Dr. Lisa Liggins-Chambers said, before the center, children who were abused would have to talk about their experiences over and over. CAC uses a team approach where kids only have to recount their abuse once.'[We're] helping children who have been sexually abused or severely physically abused,' she said. 'So, it's a team approach to making sure that these children feel safe, supported and taken care of.' Lebs knows how difficult it can be for a child. She went through adversity as a kid, and said her experience doesn't make the job easier, but if she can help a child look towards a better future – that's what matters most.
'A lot of times when families come here, it's one of the worst days of their lives,' Lebs said. 'They're going through some really tough stuff.'

‘There's just no controlling these weapons': 17-year-old with machine gun arrested in Danville
DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Vermilion County teenager is now in custody after having a machine gun in their possession earlier this week. Danville Police said a 17-year-old male was arrested Wednesday afternoon near Martin and Normal Streets. They found the loaded, altered firearm after officers witnessed the suspect acting 'suspicious' while walking illegally in the middle of the street. UPDATE: Coroner ID's Champaign shooting victim 'You pull the trigger one time and there's just no controlling these weapons after that,' said Danville Deputy Police Chief Terry McCord. Police said the teenager now faces four charges relating to possession of a machine gun. McCord talked about the string of gun incidents concerning young people over the last few weeks. 'And they noticed the subject was suspicious to them through their training and their experience, and he was walking in the roadway,' he said. 'So, he was breaking the law. So, they got out with him.' McCord also said they found the 17-year-old with a loaded, modified handgun. 'By Illinois Statute, if they modify it whatsoever and give it the ability to fire more rounds than just one round with one single trigger pull it's identified, the definition is a machine gun,' he said. This situation happened less than two weeks after an 18-year-old was shot and killed at Winter Park in Danville. 'Whether it's gang related, whether it's just kids out there with no guidance or mentorship, I don't have a good answer for you on that, other than we have to have, even more than we already have, community support,' McCord said. That unnamed 17-year-old now faces four total charges relating to the arrest: Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon Possession of a weapon under the age of 21 Unlawful use of a weapon – possession of a machine gun Obstructing a peace officer 'It's not only our special units, but the patrol officers, the detectives,' McCord said. 'I just can't give enough credit to the proactivity and the positive policing they do in order to get these guns off the street.' ‘Suspicious' 17-year-old wielding loaded machine gun arrested in Danville
DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A 17-year-old was arrested Wednesday afternoon after officers saw them walking in the middle of the road with a loaded machine gun in Danville. According to Terry McCord, Deputy Chief with the Danville Police Department, on June 2 at approximately 4 p.m., officers witnessed the suspect acting 'suspicious' while walking illegally in the middle of the roadway. The juvenile was stopped and found to have a loaded machine gun. One hospitalized on I-57 in Shelby Co. semi-truck crash The 17-year-old was then arrested on the following charges in the area of Martin and Normal Streets: Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon Possessing a weapon under the age of 21 Unlawful use of a weapon-possession of a machine gun Obstructing a peace officer A member of the Danville Police Department Community Housing Unit, with help from the Problem-Oriented Policing Unit and Vermilion County Metropolitan, carried out the arrest. The suspect was then taken to the Vermilion County Juvenile Detention Center and held for a court hearing. Danville man crashes car during stolen vehicle pursuit: Police
DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Danville man was arrested Thursday morning after he was accused of stealing a vehicle and leading police on a chase through the city. Around 7:16 a.m., Danville Police received a report that a black Toyota was stolen from a home in the 1600 block of East Voorhees Street. Just half an hour later, a Vermilion County Sheriff's Deputy saw that same vehicle in the 200 block of East Fairchild Street. The deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver — who Danville Police identified as 29-year-old Ken Underwood — refused to stop, and a pursuit began. Underwood drove northbound on Bowman Avenue and continued through a red light at its intersection with Voorhees Street, where he struck another vehicle that was heading eastbound, police said. 'Suspicious' 17-year-old wielding loaded machine gun arrested in Danville Then, Underwood got out of the stolen vehicle and started running away before he was intercepted by a Vermilion County Sheriff's Deputy and Danville Police Officer. He was taken into custody. Underwood was evaluated at an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries he sustained in the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was also evaluated for non-life threatening injuries and was released on the scene. No one else was hurt. Underwood will be booked in the Vermilion County Jail on preliminary charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and aggravated fleeing and eluding, as well as multiple traffic violations. Danville Police reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty, and the investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.
