Malaysia's MMC Port lines up cornerstone investors aiming for October IPO, sources say

Reuters6 days ago
SINGAPORE, July 28 (Reuters) - MMC Port Holdings aims to finalise its cornerstone investor lineup as early as August, ahead of a planned listing on Bursa Malaysia (BMYS.KL), opens new tab in October that could raise over $1.5 billion, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
The IPO would be Malaysia's biggest since IHH Healthcare's (IHHH.KL), opens new tab $2.1 billion debut in 2012, and Southeast Asia's largest since Indonesian tech firm Bukalapak (BUKA.JK), opens new tab raised $1.5 billion in 2021, according to LSEG data.
The country's biggest port operator, a wholly owned unit of conglomerate MMC Corp, is in talks with more than 20 potential cornerstone investors, the sources said.
Cornerstone investors are typically large institutional funds that commit to buying shares before an IPO opens to the public.
A strong lineup is expected to bolster confidence in the offering and lift sentiment in Malaysia's IPO market, which, according to LSEG, raised $751.2 million in the first half of 2025, up 17.9% from a year earlier.
Both domestic and global institutions are involved in the discussions, including BlackRock (BLK.N), opens new tab, UBS Asset Management, Malaysia's largest fund manager Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), the country's biggest pension fund, the sources said.
The sources declined to be named as the information is private and discussions are ongoing.
MMC Port and its parent company did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on Monday. BlackRock, PNB and EPF also did not immediately respond. UBS declined to comment.
Reuters reported in February that MMC Port's IPO could raise more than 6 billion ringgit in the second half of 2025.
The company, which operates five ports along the Straits of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, filed a draft prospectus with the Securities Commission Malaysia in late June without specifying the IPO size or timeline.
According to the filing, MMC Port posted a 9.2% drop in 2024 net profit to 636.6 million ringgit, despite a nearly 10% rise in revenue to 4.36 billion ringgit.
Proceeds from the IPO will go to MMC Corp, which plans to divest up to a 30% stake in its port unit. MMC Port will not receive any funds from the listing.

London stock market on the cusp of a comeback, says metals boss

The London stock market is on the cusp of a major comeback, the head of a £6 billion Greek-based metals and energy company has insisted as its shares begin trading on Monday. Evangelos Mytilineos, chairman and chief executive of Metlen, said the company's listing in London was confirmation that the City was still the predominant financial centre in Europe after Brexit. He harbours hopes that it will kick-start a revival of the London Stock Exchange, which has been suffering from a dearth of initial public offerings (IPOs). 'The City has been through a very tough time,' he said. 'Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, they try to take a big chunk of the City business. '[But] after quite a few years the City has remained the position of the top financial hub in Europe. The City can make a comeback and we will be very happy to make our contribution to that end' Formerly a family firm that traces its roots back to 1908, Mytilineos agreed to change the name of the Mytilineos Energy and Metals business to Metlen after investment bankers working on the London listing told him it would be too difficult to pronounce. Wall Street firms Citibank and Morgan Stanley are leading the Metlen listing. The business makes 10 per cent of its revenue in Britain. It is building four gas-fired plants across Britain, completed the Cleve Hill solar park in Kent earlier this month, and is part of the £1 billion consortium building the east coast subsea link. Under the terms of the listing, he has agreed to conform with London corporate governance standards by splitting his chairman and chief executive roles in the next 18 months. He aims for it to be included in the FTSE 100 index, eventually. Metlen moving its main listing to London from Athens is not an IPO but its arrival is regarded as a boost for the City where more companies are being taken over than new ones joined. Metlen picked London rather than Amsterdam for its main listing. It is making the move in an effort to boost its 'visibility'. Mytilineos said it would have been easier to list in Amsterdam because the regulatory requirements were not as stringent as London but said the Financial Conduct Authority had been 'tough but fair'. He did not look at New York because 'it would be extremely hard to attract attention' because of the vast number and greater valuations of companies listed there.

BlackRock, other fund managers lose bid to dismiss Texas climate collusion lawsuit

Aug 1 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Friday largely rejected a request by top asset managers including BlackRock (BLK.N), opens new tab to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Texas and 12 other Republican-led states that said the companies violated antitrust law through climate activism that reduced coal production and boosted energy prices. U.S. District Judge Jeremy Kernodle in Tyler, Texas agreed to dismiss just three of the 21 counts in the states' lawsuit, which also names institutional investors State Street (STT.N), opens new tab and Vanguard. The lawsuit is among the highest-profile cases targeting efforts to promote environmental, social and governance goals. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said the three companies "created an investment cartel to illegally control national energy markets and squeeze more money out of hardworking Americans,' and that 'today's victory represents a major step in holding them accountable." The three asset managers said they would continue to defend against the claims, with Vanguard calling the ruling disappointing, and State Street calling the case a risk to investors and energy markets. "By pursuing forced divestment, the Attorneys General are undermining the Trump Administration's goal of American energy independence," BlackRock said. The ruling by Kernodle, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, means the states can move forward with their claims that the asset managers violated U.S. antitrust law by joining Climate Action 100+, an investor initiative to take action to combat climate change, and used their shareholder advocacy in furtherance of its goals. Kernodle, however, dismissed claims that the asset managers violated Louisiana and Nebraska consumer protection laws. The companies have denied wrongdoing and called the case "half-baked." But the states' theories have garnered support from Trump-appointed antitrust enforcers at the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission. The outcome of the lawsuit could have major implications for how the companies, which together manage some $27 trillion, approach their holdings and passive funds. One possible remedy sought by the plaintiffs would be for the fund firms to divest holdings in coal companies, which BlackRock has said would harm the companies' access to capital and likely raise energy prices.

Bain Capital-backed Heartflow eyes $1.32 billion valuation as medtech IPOs rebound

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Medical technology company Heartflow said on Friday it was targeting a valuation of up to $1.32 billion in its U.S. initial public offering, more than three years after its previous attempt to go public fell through. Mountain View, California-based Heartflow is seeking up to $212.5 million by offering 12.5 million shares priced between $15 and $17 apiece. A string of successful high-profile debuts in recent months has injected fresh momentum into the new listings market after a slowdown fueled by tariff-driven turmoil in April. Heartflow's listing also comes amid a nascent rebound in medical technology IPOs after a years-long downturn. Medtech firms Beta Bionics (BBNX.O), opens new tab, Kestra Medical (KMTS.O), opens new tab, Carlsmed (CARL.O), opens new tab and Shoulder Innovations (SI.N), opens new tab have gone public in New York this year. "Heartflow's strong top-line growth and high gross margins position it well for initial investor interest, especially given its similarity to commercialized Beta Bionics and Kestra Medical," IPOX CEO Josef Schuster said. The company expects revenue to be between $42.9 million and $43.4 million for the three months ended June 30, a jump of 38% to 40% from a year earlier. Still, with broader market volatility rising and select deals trading below offer, investors may be cautious beyond the first trading day, Schuster said. Heartflow had earlier looked to go public through a merger with Larry Robbins-backed special purpose acquisition company at a $2.8 billion valuation. Those plans fell apart in 2022. A year later, Heartflow raised $215 million in a funding round led by private investment firm Bain Capital. It is also backed by asset managers Hayfin and Wellington. Founded in 2007 as Cardiovascular Simulation, Heartflow's AI-enabled products help physicians to diagnose and treat heart disease. Heartflow mainly generates revenue on a "pay-per-click" basis each time physicians use its products for diagnosing and managing coronary artery disease. J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Piper Sandler are the lead underwriters. Heartflow will list on the Nasdaq under the symbol "HTFL".
