BMC fines seven establishments for dumping illegal waste near Mithi river
The BMC's inspections led them to one of the key violators, 'Tha Gaurav Caterers'. The civic body's L ward team caught them dumping large quantities of leftover food waste in garbage bins near the Mithi river at Sakinaka on the night of July 30. Civic officials then visited the caterer's office and penalised them for failing to maintain cleanliness on their premises and for improper disposal of hazardous waste. The caterers were also fined ₹10,000 under the BMC Cleanliness and Sanitation byelaws.
Other violators in the area include two banks in Ghodbunder Road and Vikhroli, the Imtiaz Line depot, and housing societies in Marol, Kurla, Brahmanwadi. All violators were issued formal notices and fined as per established municipal regulations.
These actions come as per instructions from the additional municipal commissioner (city) Dr Ashwini Joshi. Joshi has directed teams of the civic body to closely monitor such violations and take firm action against offenders. Regarding the violators, Joshi said, 'All those responsible have been fined accordingly.'
Through such measures, the BMC aims to send a strong message to all commercial establishments and waste generators that irresponsible disposal practices will not be tolerated. Civic officials said that they plan to continue such vigilance and enforcement efforts to uphold public hygiene and environmental standards across the city.
Since June 12, the BMC has fined seven establishments and collected ₹65,000 for similar violations involving the unauthorised transportation and disposal of waste.
The crackdown comes after the BMC's commissioner and administrator, Bhushan Gagrani, emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and beautiful city. Various sanitation initiatives are underway, and the BMC is particularly focused on controlling the behavior of bulk waste generators and contractors who illegally dump waste at night to avoid detection.

MUMBAI: A sweeper sleeping on a footpath near Girgaum Chowpatty was run over by a Mercedes E 200 owned by a leading industrialist who manufactures and distributes food products and edible oil. According to the Gamdevi police, the chauffeur, who was allegedly driving at the time, did not notice the man asleep in front of a shop, and fled from the spot after the accident. It was only after checking CCTV footage that the vehicle was identified, traced and the accused was arrested. 'When the man was rushed to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central, the doctors informed us that he was dead due to shock and haemorrhage after suffering multiple fractures in his ribs.' The police then began their investigation and went through the CCTV footage of the locality. 'By then, the club staff and the society workers identified the man as Jagdish, who lived in Dharavi and worked with Parvati Kaliyan (39), a BMC sweeper,' said the police officer. 'Parvati has a job in D Ward for the last 25 years, and farmed out work to the deceased right from then. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, he was well known in Bhuleshwar, as he would sweep the area with Parvati.' The police officer said that after checking the CCTV footage, they found that a Mercedes that was going towards the club/Noor Mansion gate had run over him while taking a turn. 'We identified the car registration number from the footage and contacted its owner,' said the police. 'He claimed that the vehicle was being driven by their chauffeur Kamlesh Tripathi Jha (39) at the time. Jha stays in a slum pocket near the Mahalaxmi temple.' The officer said that offences had been registered against Jha under Sections 106 (1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 134 (duty of driver in case of accident and injury to a person) of the Motor Vehicles Act. 'He was arrested and was later granted bail by the court,' he added. Parvati said that Jagdish had worked with her for the last 25 years. 'He was like a brother to me,' she said. 'I carried out his last rites, as we don't know where his family lives in Uttar Pradesh, nor do we have any phone numbers. He used to drink and sleep on the footpath. Jaggu was well known in Bhuleshwar.' The police said they had seized the Mercedes involved in the incident.

Family of Jaipur man abducted in Mali seeks PM's intervention to secure release
The family of a cement industry consultant from Jaipur, who was abducted last month in West African country Mali, on Monday (August 4, 2025) sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to secure his release. The family, struggling with uncertainty, has not received any information on his whereabouts so far. Prakash Chandra Joshi, 61, was among the three Indian nationals abducted in the Kayes region of Mali during an armed assault by suspected terrorists affiliated with Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen (JNIM), a group linked to Al-Qaeda, on July 1. The incident occurred at Diamond Cement Factory, which Mr. Joshi had joined as general manager on June 5. Mr. Joshi's daughter, Chitra Joshi, said at a press conference here that though the family had approached the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Embassy in Mali's capital Bamako and other authorities, it had not received any 'convincing response'. 'We have no information about his location or the demands of the abductors,' she said. 'The factory officials initially informed us about the attack on July 1. Since then, we have not been told anything about ransom or negotiations by the factory, the Embassy, or the MEA,' Ms. Joshi said. The two other abducted persons belong to Telangana and Odisha. Ms. Joshi demanded that the Union government update the three families regularly about the situation and be in communication with them. 'We remain completely in the dark about any concrete action... With every day that goes by, our anxiety and helplessness are growing,' she said. Accompanied by her mother Suman, Ms. Joshi also highlighted the humanitarian concern, saying her father needed regular medicines in view of his health condition and was a strict vegetarian. She said Mr. Joshi had worked earlier in the Middle East and Africa for several years, but had no inkling that foreign nationals could be targeted in Mali's internal armed conflict. The family has since approached the Members of Parliament from Rajasthan and the State authorities seeking their intervention in the matter. Jaipur Rural MP Rao Rajendra Singh, who helped the family and guided it to the MEA, has extended support and remained in touch. Following the incident, the MEA had identified the abducted individuals and said in a statement that the Ministry's senior officials were closely monitoring the evolving situation and remained engaged at various levels to facilitate safe and early release of the Indian nationals. The MEA also said that the Indian Embassy in Bamako was in constant contact with the local authorities and security agencies.

HC lens on unauthorised landfilling activities in city
Cuttack: Orissa high court on Monday took serious note of allegations regarding unauthorised landfilling activities near Sainik School, within Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) limits, reportedly carried out without statutory environmental clearances. The matter came up during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Bhubaneswar Unnayan Parishad, which raises concerns about landfilling being undertaken in violation of pollution control norms, potentially posing environmental and health hazards. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice M S Raman heard the case and directed key govt and regulatory bodies to file their responses. Senior Advocate Manoj Kumar Mishra, appearing for the BMC commissioner, denied the allegations and contended that no landfilling was taking place at the site. He submitted that a waste processing unit was operational there and sought the court's permission to place supporting documents on record through an affidavit. Advocates B K Mahapatra, B P B Bahali, and S S Mishra appeared on behalf of the Parishad. Taking cognizance of the seriousness of the allegations, the bench directed the BMC and OSPCB to file their affidavits within one week. It also sought responses from the state revenue department, the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The petitioner has been given an additional week thereafter to file a rejoinder, if necessary. The next hearing is scheduled for Aug 18, 2025.
