Nuns' arrest: Hundreds take to streets in Thrissur, join major demonstration

Thrissur: Perhaps in the first major public expression of brewing discontent among Church followers in India against the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh, hundreds of nuns, priests and laity members took to the streets and participated in a massive demonstration in Thrissur on Tuesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now CBCI president and Thrissur archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath led the demonstration. CBCI's selection of Thrissur for the large-scale protest also sends out a message to the ruling BJP at Centre as Thrissur, represented currently by the Union minister Suresh Gopi, is the only Parliament seat ever won by the party in the state. Interestingly, the support of the Christian community was cited as a major factor in Gopi's victory. Mar Thazhath told reporters during the march that the nuns' arrest was unjust and against the Constitution and the demonstration was an appeal to the rulers for their early release. There is no justification for their arrest on charges of human trafficking and conversion, the archbishop said. He said attacks on minorities were happening at different places. "Unfortunately, such incidents are on the rise and it is painful," said Mar Thazhath who added that the protests would continue till the nuns were released. He dismissed the allegation that Christianity was a foreign religion and pointed out that India had always welcomed different religions from different parts of the world. Christians have made yeomen contributions in nation building. Are Christians being harassed because they made vital contributions for the social upliftment in the country, Mar Thazhath asked. Auxiliary bishop Mar Tony Neelankavil said the demonstration was not just against the arrest of two nuns. It is to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution, he said.
