Tropical Storm Danas looms over China after battering Taiwan, killing two
Packing winds of around 80 kmh (50 mph) at its centre, Danas is forecast to make a sharp left turn as it moves northwest across the South China Sea before striking the port city of Taizhou, prompting the local maritime authority to suspend passenger shipping and cancel over 100 voyages.
China, the world's second-largest economy, faces growing threats from extreme weather, which meteorologists link to climate change—risks that each year stand to wipe out tens of billions of US dollars' worth of commercial activity, as cities flood, shipping activity stalls, and croplands are washed out.
Authorities in Zhejiang issued a flash flood warning early on Tuesday, with forecasters expecting 100 to 250 millimetres of rain to hit the 650 km (400 miles) stretch from Fuzhou, the capital of neighbouring Fujian province, to Hangzhou, Zhejiang's capital.
After sweeping through Zhejiang, Danas is expected to move into Jiangxi province, whose rolling hills and mountains make it particularly vulnerable to catastrophic flooding.

Bitcoin soars to all-time peak just shy of US$112,000
NEW YORK: Bitcoin climbed to an all-time high near US$112,000 late on Wednesday, bolstered by an increased risk appetite and persistent institutional demand as traditional financial market players embraced the world's largest cryptocurrency. It touched a record peak of US$111,988.90 and was last up 0.4 per cent at US$111,259. Since the beginning of the year, bitcoin has advanced more than 18 per cent. "Bitcoin is the only asset I am aware of where it becomes less risky as it grows in size," wrote Anthony Pompliano, founder and CEO of Professional Capital Management in a letter to investors on Wednesday. "There were few sophisticated capital allocators who could gain exposure when bitcoin was US$100-200 billion market cap. Now that the asset is measured in trillions, almost every capital allocator on the planet can put the exposure on." The Trump administration's crypto-friendly policies have bolstered digital assets overall, opening pools of capital to the sector. For instance, Trump Media & Technology Group, run by the US president's family, is looking to launch an exchange-traded fund that will invest in multiple crypto tokens, including bitcoin, ether, solana and ripple, according to a filing with the US markets regulator on Tuesday. Bitcoin's rally also spread to other cryptocurrencies. Ether, the second-largest digital currency in terms of market capitalization, also rallied, hitting a one-month high of US$2,794.95. It last traded up 5.4 per cent at US$2,740.99. Other crypto-related stocks also gained. Strategy, co-founded by the leading voice in the bitcoin treasury movement Michael Saylor, rose 4.7 per cent to US$415.41, while Coinbase Global advanced 5.4 per cent to US$373.85.

Palm tracks Dalian palm oil lower
JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures slipped on Thursday, snapping three sessions of gains, as weakness in Dalian palm oil and a strong ringgit weighed on the contract. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange lost RM15, or 0.36 per cent, to RM4,142 (US$975.74) a metric ton by 0239 GMT. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract barely changed, up 0.05 per cent, while its palm oil contract lost 0.35 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade rose 0.9 per cent. Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices dropped on Thursday as the latest tariff announcements by US President Donald Trump were perceived by market participants to threaten global economic growth and demand for the resource. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, strengthened 0.07 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity more expensive for buyers holding foreign currencies. Asian stocks rose slightly on Thursday, riding on optimism from Nvidia's brief rise to a world-record US$4 trillion valuation and as investors largely shrugged off US President Donald Trump's latest tariff salvos.
