The visiting BC Lions and Edmonton Elks will have a rematch of their season-opening clash on Sunday.
The Lions (2-3) handed the West Division rival Elks (1-3) a 31-14 loss on June 7 in Vancouver.
Both teams snapped three-game losing streaks last weekend, with Edmonton defeating Ottawa 39-33 for its first win of the season and BC winning 21-20 at Montreal for its first victory since Week 1.
Justin Rankin rushed 12 times for 105 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 69 yards and another score to lead the Elks against the RedBlacks. Fellow running back Javon Leake returned five punts for 163 yards, including a 94-yard touchdown.
'Thunder and lightning,' Rankin told the team website this week of his pairing with Leake. 'You ain't never seen nothing like it.'
Rankin said he and Leake have been able to carry over their success from last season because there's no jealousy between them.
'When I started to get hot, he's like, 'You rolling? Go, go, go,' you know?' Rankin said. 'When he's hot, it's vice versa. You got the spark, keep being the spark. I don't think there's any selfishness in the room. And when you have depth at a position like that, it's hard to stop.'
The Lions found a way to stop them in the first meeting, limiting Rankin and Leake to a combined 29 yards on 10 carries.
The star for BC in the season-opening win was Nathan Rourke, who completed 27 of 36 passes for 324 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Rourke returned from a two-game absence for an oblique injury and threw for 352 yards with one TD and also ran for a score in last Saturday's win at Montreal. Sean Whyte's walk-off 43-yard field goal provided the winning points.
'I think there are a lot of things we can do better, starting with me,' Rourke said, per the team website. 'Good teams find a way when it's not perfect, and it definitely wasn't perfect today. So, we'll go back to the drawing board and get ready for Edmonton next week.'

Schoen, Bryant miss practice following bye week for Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are back from their second bye week of the season, but receiver Dalton Schoen and offensive lineman Stanley Bryant both missed a second straight day of practice with injuries. According to the official injury report, Schoen has another knee injury and Bryant is dealing with a sore ankle as the team prepares for Friday's rematch against the Calgary Stampeders who now lead the West Division with a 4-1 record. While one would think Schoen's injury would finally open the door for free agent acquisition Dillon Mitchell to make his long-awaited Bombers' regular season debut, it appears the club is leaning towards Kody Case instead. Case ran with the first team offence in place of Schoen in Monday's practice. Case is in his second season with the club and had just one catch in three games as a rookie while also handling some returner duties. He started the 2025 season on the Bombers practice roster. Story continues below advertisement On Monday's 680 CJOB Bomber Coach's Show, head coach Mike O'Shea told host Derek Taylor that Mitchell is more effective at wide out rather than in the slot. 'So, that would require moving a couple pieces to fit one in. But he is a more of an on-the-ball receiver. Doesn't mean he can't waggle. Doesn't mean he can't do that, but all of our guys, especially if you're in the slot, if you're in a waggle position, you got to know all the positions, right, to move around. It's a little more challenging for sure. 'Dillon Mitchell is a very good football player. You know a little bit behind when it came through training camp in terms of some fitness. But he's back in good shape. He's moving around well. And we got some very talented depth.' With Bryant's status in question, American Micah Vanterpool was occupying his spot at the left tackle position in practice. Gabe Wallace was with the number one offence at left guard after backing up Vanterpool last game. The loss of Bryant would be significant, but last season's starting right tackle Eric Lofton returned to practice this week after missing the first four games with a knee injury he suffered early in training camp. 'That's one of things we have always liked about our team is the depth,' O'Shea told reporters after Monday's practice. 'And the options we have when we need to make a change because of a possible injury situation that necessitates a change. But yeah, they both can play. Eric obviously has a ton of experience.' Story continues below advertisement Lofton appeared in all 18 regular season games with the Bombers last season. Running backs Peyton Logan (thigh) and Michael Chris-Ike (knee) along with long snapper Mike Benson (hip) also missed Monday's session. The Bombers host the Stamps on Friday starting at 7:30 p.m. at Princess Auto Stadium.

Reds select Riverhawks pitcher in MLB Draft

Carson Latimer is now major-league property. The hard-throwing pitcher for the Edmonton Riverhawks saw his name called in the 12th round, 354th overall, of the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday by the Cincinnati Reds. The 21-year-old right-hander who attends Sacramento State University is in the Riverhawks' starting rotation. The 6-foot-3, 210-lb. native of Delta, B.C., who is 2-0 with a 0.85 earned-run average and 21 strikeouts in four starts for the West Coast League (WCL) club, threw the fastest pitch recorded in the four years of Riverhawks history. He threw a fastball clocked at 99 miles per hour on July 1 during the team's sold-out Canada Day game against the Port Angeles Lefties. Latimer played the U.S. college spring season for Sacramento State, going 2-3 in 15 appearances for the Hornets, seven of them starts. He finished the spring campaign with a 6.14 ERA, striking out 28 and walking 26 in 36.2 innings of work. The Riverhawks are 6-3, good for second in second-half play in the league's North Division, 2-12 games behind the Victoria HarbourCats. The summer collegiate squad placed third in the first half of the season with a 14-12 record, 3-1/2 games behind the first-place Bellingham Bulls. Edmonton returns to WCL action on Friday (7:05 p.m.) at ReMax Field to begin a three-game set against the visiting Kamloops NorthPaws.

Calgary Hitmen lose head coach to NHL's Edmonton Oilers

The Calgary Hitmen are on the hunt for a new head coach. Article content After one campaign as bench boss for the Western Hockey League squad, Paul McFarland is moving a few hours north to join the NHL's Edmonton Oilers as an assistant on Kris Knoblauch's staff. Article content Article content Some offers are too good to pass up — like the opportunity to oversee a power-play unit that features the starry likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Article content Article content McFarland, 39, has six seasons of NHL experience. He has previously been an assistant in Florida, Toronto and Seattle, running the man-advantage on each of those stops. Article content 'We extend our sincere thanks to Paul for his leadership and the positive impact he made during his time with the Hitmen,' the WHL team said in a release Monday. Article content With McFarland at the helm, the Hitmen rolled to a 45-17-6 record in the 2024-25 campaign, finishing third in the overall standings with 96 points. They were considered a top contender for the WHL title, but were eliminated by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the second round of the playoffs. Article content The Oilers came calling after Glen Gulutzan — another familiar name around the Saddledome — was hired by the Dallas Stars. Article content 'I have a lot of respect for Paul. I think he's an excellent coach,' said Knoblauch, who has led the Oilers to two straight trips to the Stanley Cup final, after Monday's announcement. 'My time knowing him has gone back to coaching against him in the Ontario Hockey League and I also coached with him for a short period of time with Hockey Canada. Article content Article content 'I know a lot of coaches who are familiar with him, have spent a lot of time with him, and have a lot of respect for him. He's a hard-working guy, brings a lot of enthusiasm to work. I think those are good attributes to bring to our team. And just the fact that he's been running an NHL power-play for many years … The success that he had with those good power-plays in Toronto and Florida, I believe he'll be able to bring that over and have a good, strong working relationship with the players that we have on our team right now.'
