Ropar boy becomes world's youngest to scale Europe's highest mountain peak
Teghbir Singh has become the youngest ever in the world to scale the Mount Elbrus which is the highest peak of European continent and located in Russia at a height of more than 18,510 ft (5,642 metres). He is all of six years and nine months.
Hailing from Ropar, Teghbir started the trek to the Mount Elbrus on June 20 and walked all along to reach the Elbrus peak, the highest point of the mountain, on June 28, 2025.
It is a low-oxygen trek and one needs preparation to tackle problems associated with altitude sickness. However, conquering all these challenges, Teghbir reached the summit, where normal temperature is -10 Celsius.
After conquering the peak, he received the Mountain Climbing Certificate issued by Mountaineering, Rock Climbing and Sports Tourism Federation Of Kabardino – Balkarian Republik (Russia).
'It is to certify that Teghbir Singh from India is the world's youngest sumiter on Mount Elbrus at age of 6 years , 9 months & 4 days,' states the certificate.
Elated over the achievement, Teghbir said, 'I knew where I was to reach and finally I reached and had a picture with my father there.'
'I was walking first time on snow. My shoes were heavy but I had practised it,' said the second standard student of Shiwalik Public School, Ropar.
The previous world record was set last year by Wagah Kushagra, a native of Maharashtra, at the age of 7 years and 3 months.
In August 2024, Teghbir had become the youngest Asian to scale Mt Kilimanjaro (highest peak of African continent). His name features in the Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records.
He had also reached Mt Everest Base Camp, Nepal, in April 2024.
Delighted over the new achievement of scaling Europe's highest peak, his father Sukhinderdeep Singh said, 'Teghbir started preparing for this feat almost a year back. He was trained by Bikramjit Singh Ghuman (retired coach) who used to help him with the exercises related to increase cardiovascular health and increase lung capacity to deal with altitude sickness. He used to go on weekly treks with me and coach to different hilly locations.'
'The climb was different as compared to Mt Kilimanjaro and other treks he did before. It was first time he was walking in snow with high boots, crampons, harness & oxygen support on. It increased the weight on feet by almost three-four kg. He walked and stayed in a low-oxygen altitude in a minus grade temperature for almost a week,' said Sukhinderdeep, who accompanied him during the journey.
His father, who works as an administrator at a hospital at Ropar, said, 'Our stays were in Mountain Huts and it took eight days to scale the summit. Due to bad weather and fierce snowstorm, the summit push was cancelled twice.'
In a brief safe window when the wind speed lowered, they set for the summit on the night of June 27 at 1 am in freezing temperature of around -20 Celsius. It was a challenging moment for the entire crew which consisted of his father, two guides, and one support staff.
They reached the summit at 7.56 am on June 28 after walking for around six hours in the freezing temperature .
A gynecologist, Teghbir's mother Dr Manpreet Kaur said, 'Diet played a major role in his journey. He followed a strict diet schedule as made by his coach.'
His father said that Teghbir Singh would reach back on July 1, 2025.

A Bumrah surprise? AB de Villiers offers optimistic take on ENG vs IND Test series
Legendary South African batter AB de Villiers has said it's unfortunate that India are grappling with workload concerns surrounding Jasprit Bumrah, adding that it's far from ideal for the Asian giants to be without their pace spearhead for the full duration of the five-Test series in Villiers cited the example of how South Africa used to manage the workload of Dale Steyn ahead of marquee series, suggesting India may have missed a trick in doing the same with of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, selectors, the team management, and Bumrah himself confirmed that the world's top pacer would only play three of the five Test matches in England. Despite his inclusion in the series opener in Leeds, India suffered a five-wicket defeat. Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings after India posted a commanding total of 471, but his solo effort-lacking support from the rest of the bowling unit-wasn't enough. England chased down 371 in the fourth innings to take a 1-0 lead. Despite the defeat, India head coach Gautam Gambhir reiterated that the team's plan regarding Bumrah remains unchanged: he will feature in only two more Tests in the India's first training day in Birmingham-venue for the second Test starting July 2, Bumrah did not bowl. However, hopes of his inclusion were revived when he bowled at full tilt in the nets on on his YouTube show, de Villiers cheekily suggested that India might spring a surprise by playing Bumrah in all five Tests."It is unfortunate that, with an inexperienced bowling attack, he's not going to play all the Test matches-or at least that's what the media and press seem to be saying. Maybe it's all part of a surprise. They're saying 'we are thinking of resting Bumrah', but then he ends up playing all five Tests. India are 1-0 down-hopefully that will be the surprise. But perhaps this is also an opportunity for someone like Arshdeep Singh or Kuldeep Yadav to step up," said de it remains unlikely that Bumrah will play more than three Tests, given how clear he has been about his fitness and workload management. At the start of the series, he confirmed having consulted doctors and trainers about how much his body could handle in the rigours of Test World No. 1 pacer also revealed he had turned down an offer to captain the Test side after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired, prioritising his physical well-being and his long-term availability for de Villiers maintained that India should have planned better to ensure Bumrah was fully available for such a high-stakes probably the best bowler in the world across all formats right now. So, it's incredibly difficult to find the right time to rest him," said de Villiers. "But this Test series-this would've been the one, in my opinion, to get him ready for all five matches. That's how we used to manage Dale (Steyn). We'd rest him for less important T20 and ODI series and make sure he was peaking for major Test tours against Australia, England, India, and sometimes New Zealand, depending on rankings at the time.""I don't know if it was mismanagement, or maybe because he recently returned from injury. Perhaps they saw the IPL as a warm-up phase. It could also be that his surgeon advised against playing five Tests in a row. You have to respect that. But ultimately, it's up to Team India to manage him wisely," he had committed to playing the full five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the 2024-25 season, but his long-standing back injury resurfaced midway through the fifth Test, forcing him out of action. He went on to miss the Champions Trophy, which India won in his Bumrah sit out the second Test in Birmingham, India will be forced to turn to their inexperienced bench, with options like Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh waiting in the wings.- EndsTrending Reel

ENG vs IND 2nd Test: Edgbaston pitch report, Birmingham weather forecast
England will aim to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match Test series when Ben Stokes' men take on Shubman Gill's Team India in the second Test, starting July 2 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The gap of over a week between the first and second Test has given both teams the opportunity to restrategise. There is growing support for including Kuldeep Yadav in India's playing XI, while it will be interesting to see whether Jofra Archer returns to England's lineup after a four-year absence from the longest format of the game. However, the final playing XIs for both teams will be decided based on the pitch and prevailing weather conditions. As both teams gear up for this much-anticipated clash in Birmingham, Business Standard takes a closer look at the pitch and weather outlook. England vs India 2nd Test: Edgbaston Pitch Report Over five days of Test cricket, the surface at Edgbaston Cricket Ground is expected to provide an exciting contest between bat and ball. The pitch can offer considerable pace and bounce at the start of the match—especially on Days 1 and 2—staying true to its traditional English character. Top-order batters may find it challenging to handle the pronounced seam movement that fast bowlers are expected to enjoy, particularly in the early sessions if the skies are overcast. The Dukes ball is likely to nip around, increasing the chances of early wickets—more so if clouds linger over the ground. Batting conditions are expected to improve as the match progresses into Days 3 and 4. If the sun comes out, the surface should flatten, offering genuine and consistent bounce. This will allow batters more freedom to play their shots and build partnerships. By Day 5, however, spinners may come into play as the surface begins to deteriorate. Cracks and rough patches could result in variable bounce and turn. Average scores at Edgbaston: 1st innings: Around 310 2nd innings: Around 280 3rd innings: 230–250 4th innings: 170–200 Birmingham Weather and Rain Forecast Ahead of the Second Test Weather predictions are never absolute, as atmospheric factors can sometimes lead to unexpected changes. Nonetheless, here's what the forecast suggests for July 2 to July 5. According to BBC Weather, there is a chance of rainfall on Day 1 (July 2) before the scheduled start of play at 11 AM local time (3:30 PM IST). However, conditions are expected to improve thereafter, with Birmingham set to offer largely pleasant weather conducive to uninterrupted play. July 3 (Thursday) High temperature: 23 degrees Celsius Low temperature: 10 degrees Celsius Rain chance: No chance of rainfall Remarks: Sunny intervals and a gentle breeze July 4 (Friday) High temperature: 23 degrees Celsius Low temperature: 14 degrees Celsius Rain chance: No chance of rainfall Remarks: Sunny intervals and a gentle breeze July 5 (Saturday) High temperature: 23 degrees Celsius Low temperature: 13 degrees Celsius Rain chance: 62 per cent chance of rainfall at 10 AM local time (2:30 PM IST) Remarks: Light rain and a moderate breeze July 6 (Sunday) High temperature: 19 degrees Celsius Low temperature: 11 degrees Celsius Rain chance: Light rain chances throughout the day Remarks: Light rain showers and a moderate breeze Birmingham weather forecast as per Accuweather According to there is a chance of a thunderstorm on the eve of the IND vs ENG 2nd Test in Birmingham.
