Carmela's: London's next New York-style pizzeria will serve classic house pies in Islington
Next up is Carmela's, a 'bold new restaurant' on Upper Street in Islington that pays homage to New York pizza while celebrating London's own burgeoning scene (there are so many new NYC-style pizzerias: another one upcoming is Bad Boy Pizza Society, but more on this one later).
Carmela's is the work of Phil Chaykin, the founder of Ugly Dumpling, and Gerry del Guercio (Italian heritage) and Paul Delany (London Irish), the duo behind BiteTwice, an online video channel.
The trio said customers should expect classic NYC pizza at Carmela's, with 'crisp' but 'foldable' bases and toppings made with 'only the finest ingredients'.
Produce will come from artisans in London and Italy, while the menu will focus on a small number of 'house pies' — cheese, tomato, white — though guests will be able to personalize their pizzas should they wish.
'The focus is simple, honest, and uncompromising,' said Chaykin, who added the name Carmela's is a tribute to 'the formidable women of Italian-American heritage — the strong, no-nonsense matriarchs who run the house and kitchen'.
Most will be immediately drawn to Carmela Soprano, though the name also honours Gerry's nonna, also called Carmela, and Paul's younger sister Carmel.
The interiors have been designed by Joanna Warda, who's created a setting that is bright by day and transforms into a cosy, intimate space with a 'moody glow' come evening.
The hope is that the ambience is 'warm, vibrant, and unmistakable old-school Italian-American', said the team, while the service will be heartfelt.
Beyond pizza, the menu includes a tight lineup of starters and salads — mozzarella with hot maple sauce; meatballs; eggplant (aubergine) roll with ricotta and pesto — and a drinks list of beers, wines and simple cocktails.
Chaykin, del Gercio and Delany said they hope Carmela's becomes a cornerstone in London's ever-evolving restaurant scene. It is expected to open by the end of the month.

Singers Lewis Capaldi and Lorde have topped the UK charts after their performances at Glastonbury, the Official Charts Company said. Alternative pop star Lorde's new record Virgin reached number one on the album chart after she performed all 11 tracks at a secret set at the Woodsies stage on Saturday. 'But it's just amazing to be here with you all, and I can't thank you all enough for coming out and coming and seeing me. 'Second time's a charm on this one, everybody. 'It's just a short set today, but I just wanted to come and kind of finish what I couldn't finish the first time round.' Introducing Survive at the festival, Capaldi became visibly emotional as he said: 'The last two years haven't been the best for me, it's been difficult at times. 'This has been my f****** goal, to get back here,' he added. He ended his performance with Somebody You Loved, the track that Glastonbury crowds helped him to sing when he struggled with his Tourette symptoms in 2023. The condition causes you to make sudden, repetitive sounds or movements and while there is no cure, treatment can help manage the tics, according to the NHS website. Virgin is Lorde's fourth studio album, and her previous three, Pure Heroine (2013), Melodrama (2017) and Solar Power (2021) all reached the top 10 of the UK albums chart. Lorde, 28, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, took to the Woodsies stage at Glastonbury on Saturday to perform the album in full to the packed tent and a crowd gathered outside. The New Zealand-born singer pulled her top off to finish with a double hit of Ribs from her debut album Pure Heroine, which she said was first played at Glastonbury in 2017, and Melodrama's Green Light, during which the lasers turned from blue to green. The final song prompted a football terrace-style singalong that almost drowned out Lorde herself. She is best known for songs such as Homemade Dynamite, Solar Power and her second single Royals, which reached number one in the UK singles chart.

The setlist for Oasis' reunion tour across the UK and Ireland has been revealed following the first show in Cardiff on Friday (July 4). After 16 years, Oasis is finally back! Culture bosses have forecasted that the 'super weekend' of events in July, including Black Sabbath's Birmingham farewell, will pump millions into the local economy. The West Midlands Growth Company has projected that the region's visitor economy could see a surge of up to £20 million. They expect as many as 300,000 fans flocking to the region at the start of July, providing a much-needed boost for the hospitality sector.
