757 embraces ‘local woke mob' slogan after credited with controversial brewery closing

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Armed Forces Brewery had a controversial arrival into the 757. So it should come as no surprise that it would leave the same way.
Armed Forces Brewing Company leaving Norfolk, to relocate elsewhere
After its tumultuous arrival into Ghent despite the hurdles and protests from some locals, the business is closing its doors and seeking relocation. The CEO, Alan Beal, blamed the 'local woke mob' for its lack of success; a phrase that some residents and businesses have now adopted as a satirical badge of honor.

Executive Director of the 757 Creative ReUse Center, Beth Dryer, has been invested in the downfall of the brewery since discussions of its arrival back in 2023. Dryer was among those who spoke at the Norfolk Town Halls explaining why the business should be barred from coming. Happy to see the business leave, Dryer created pins with the phrase 'Local woke mob.'
When Dryer heard the news of the closing, and the CEO's reasoning, she decided to use the 18 pin kits from her locally-owned thrift supplies and crafts store to make pins that could be handed out with any donation. Upon seeing the success of her product, Dryer has order more products with the same design, including 200 stickers, more pins and even T-shirts. A fundraiser was created for those wanting a shirt, already surpassing the store owner's goal.
Norfolk Candle at Selden Market is another business embracing the phrase and branding it into their products. The Local Woke Mob candle has recently been restocked after selling out. The candle 'smells like banned books', according to the company's website. The community's response to the product was described as 'beautiful.'

Back when resident got wind of the business' potential arrival, many were not thrilled, citing supposed anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. One of its owners, Robert O'Neill, allegedly made racist and homophobic remarks. O'Neill is a former U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6 member who says he shot and killed Osama Bin Laden.

After push back from political leaders, threats of lawsuits from the company and protests from locals, the business was finally established in Norfolk. The business became a money pit in 2024, reporting an unaudited net income loss of $1.76 million in June 30, 2024 for the six months prior, according to the Securities and Exchange filing.

During the beginning and end of the six-month period, the business dropped from a cash and cash equivalent of $282,549 to just $12,239, according to an unaudited report.
Black Lives Matter 757 President JaPharii Jones said the city of Norfolk and the surrounding community were not OK with the 'anti-woke' rhetoric.
'We had expressed our disdain and disapproval of the brewery and them not seeming to be very open to inclusiveness,' Jones said.
The closing of the brewery is a testament of what can happen when communities band together to not support something, Jones said. 'A 40-day boycott is also underway for companies like Target and Amazon for ending their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, Jones said.
'It goes to show that if you don't, you know, support your surrounding community, if you're not inclusive, your business very well might be shut down by the 'local woke mob,'' Jones said.
Jones said he thinks the business could've succeeded if they were willing to listen to the locals.
'I'd rather them have a sit down, talk to people, find out their concerns, address those and maybe something could've been fixed,' Jones said.

GE Appliances Doubles Down on U.S. Manufacturing With $490 Million Laundry Plant Investment at Its Global Headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GE Appliances, a Haier company, today announced a $490 million investment at its Louisville, Kentucky global headquarters and largest manufacturing site to create its most advanced manufacturing plant for production of clothes washers. The project will reshore production of the GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer and the GE® and GE Profile™ UltraFresh Front Load Washer line-up from China, creating 800 new, full-time jobs and cementing Kentucky's position as a global hub for advanced appliance manufacturing. This investment positions the company to become the biggest American washer manufacturer, builds on GE Appliances' 10-year, $3.5 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing, and reinforces its position as America's #1 appliance company. 1 'We are bringing laundry production to our global headquarters in Louisville because manufacturing in the U.S. is fundamental to our 'zero-distance' business strategy to make appliances as close as possible to our customers and consumers,' said Kevin Nolan, president & CEO, GE Appliances. 'This decision is our most recent product reshoring and aligns with the current economic and policy environment.' 'Today's announcement further secures Louisville as the global headquarters of GE Appliances, a Haier company, and brings more world-class, unparalleled appliance manufacturing back to the United States,' said Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. 'This new investment strengthens one of our vital Kentucky assets and underscores our state's reputation as America's destination of choice for advanced manufacturing and job creation.' A Model Factory for the Appliance Industry This investment will move production of more than 15 models of front load washers to Building 2 at Appliance Park – bringing the total area of clothes care production to the equivalent of 33 football fields. Next door, Building 1 at Appliance Park produces top load washers and front load dryers. Building 2 will be redesigned as a model factory, showcasing the latest in automation, robotics, and material-handling technologies, including AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) and AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots). The plant is vertically integrated and will include in-house manufacturing of critical parts such as stainless-steel baskets and cabinets, high-precision metal stamping and forming, and injection-molding and production equipment, delivering products with the quality, craftsmanship and market-leading features consumers have come to expect from products carrying GE Appliances' brands. The new manufacturing lines will open in 2027. Product Highlights That Wow GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer – This ventless 2-in-1 laundry appliance washes and dries full-sized loads in the same drum, eliminating the transfer step and delivering a large laundry load ready to wear in about two hours 2. In addition to time-saving capabilities, the machine also saves energy with ventless heat pump technology and offers the ultimate installation flexibility — fitting anywhere with a water hookup and 120v plug. This game-changing innovation revolutionized the laundry chore by giving time back to American consumers. GE Profile™ Front Load Washer with UltraFresh™ Vent System+ – This revolutionary washer line-up was thoughtfully engineered to remove the dreaded front load odor, eliminating the need for owners to leave the door open after each load. A three-part solution includes a wider gasket to better drain the water, the UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock™ that circulates fresh air to keep the basket dry, and Microban® Antimicrobial Technology built in to help defend against the growth of odor-causing bacteria. 'Manufacturing in Louisville puts production closer to our designers, engineers and consumers so that together we can create our most innovative laundry platforms,' said Lee Lagomarcino, vice president, clothes care, GE Appliances. 'The team has already developed new solutions for American households and can't wait to get started making them. The new full-size capacity products have features that save time and offer unparalleled convenience. We created the full-size washer/dryer combo laundry category, and we intend to maintain our leadership position with consumers.' Support from the City and Commonwealth The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) preliminarily approved performance-based incentives in support of the project under the Kentucky Business Investment program, workforce training grants through the Kentucky Skills Network and funds to support the modernizing the building. Final amounts will be determined upon GE Appliances meeting job retention and investment targets. 'I am thrilled GE Appliances will continue to build the world's best appliances at its global headquarters in Louisville,' said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. Longtime Newport News treasurer files as an Independent

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Longtime Newport News Treasurer Marty Eubank will seek re-election as an independent. Eubank filed paperwork and qualified with the Department of Voter Registration in May. For nearly three decades, Eubank has served as the Newport News treasurer. In March 2025, Eubank shared exclusively with WAVY-TV 10 that he would not seek re-election. Previous: Longtime Newport News treasurer will not seek reelection; 3 candidates enter race 'I did not have a change of heart. I have worked for the city for 41 years. I've been the longest-serving treasurer of 28 years for Newport News. I'm very proud of that. I very much looked forward to retiring this year,' he said. 'I did everything I could to position myself to run in this campaign for one more term. But after I met Sanu Dieng-Cooper, I talked to her and realized what a perfect candidate she would be to be my successor, which is something I've been looking for the past few years! She impressed me with her ideas, her vision, her knowledge of the office already, and her understanding of what it does. I realized she'd be the perfect candidate to win the Democratic primary. That's when I decided to bow out of the primary. I fully support Sanu. I 100% still endorse being the next Treasurer of Newport News. I'm confident that the voters will see how qualified she is. They will support and vote for her on June 17.' Your Local Election Headquarters on The Newport News Department of Voter Registration confirms that Sanu Dieng-Cooper and Derek Reason are the Democratic candidates for the June primary. There are no Republican candidates. Justin Kennedy, an independent candidate for treasurer, will appear on the November 4th ballot. Eubank told 10 On Your Side he filed as an independent following the 2025 NAACP Newport News Candidate Forum on April 30. 'I am confident she [Sanu] will win the Primary. But you can't predict an election, and that 1% off chance that Sanu might not win. Then I position myself to come back into the general election,' said Eubank. 'After watching the NAACP forum and listening to both sides, I was in the audience. I became concerned that Sanu Cooper has to be elected as our next treasurer. She has to!' Eubank also received a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request regarding the legitimacy of one of the candidates' businesses. WAVY-TV 10 received an independent copy of the FOIA from the Newport News Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue, which states the business in question 'does not hold a City of Newport News business license, as such a license is not required for the type of activity this business performs. The USDOT number associated with this business is currently listed as inactive in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) database. The business's status with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) is also listed as inactive per SCC records.' asked Eubank about 'integrity' following the recent filing. 'I'm doing it for the right reason, not the wrong reason. I'm not going back on my word. I still fully support Sanu. I fully expect her to win. She has my 100% endorsement. Come June 17, I will be by her side celebrating. But I am trying only to position myself [just] in case. Elections can be unpredictable in the event that 1% off the chance the Sanu is not elected. I will be here to protect this office,' said Eubank. Eubank urges residents to watch the candidate interviews and forum to 'judge for yourself.' 'I have always been a Democrat. I will always be a Democrat. I view myself at this point as an Independent-Democrat, but I'm doing what I have to do. I'm doing this for the right reasons. For the citizens of Newport News,' he said. Program to 'light up' downtown area of Portsmouth to improve safety and visibility

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A new grant program is hoping to light up the downtown area of Portsmouth. The Executive Director of the Portsmouth Partnership, Michelle Wren, said the area used to be lit up. The organization is hoping to bring that back with their recently launched 'Safe and Secure Downtown' Program. It works in two ways and will be in place between the 100 and 700 blocks of High Street. First, they plan to light the trees in the median of the street. Then, they want the businesses that line this stretch of the street to join in too. 'They will get $1,000 if they upgrade their lighting as part of this program and their security cameras. We are going to give them a $1,000 donation towards the project, and we're also going to help them with city permitting and the downtown Design Council,' Wren said. Portsmouth Partnership is hoping this will all improve safety, security and nighttime visibility for properties in the High Street corridor. The area saw a bit of crime last year, so organizers want this to make a difference. Mayor Shannon Glover said the city will support this effort in any way they can. 'When people can see more, then they can do more. They can be happier, they can feel safer and then it kind of persuades people that don't want to do the right thing, not to show up,' Glover said. So far, Portsmouth Partnership has raised $40,000 dollars to go towards the program through several different sponsors. Now, they're searching for businesses who want to participate. Businesses like ELG Sweet Boutique are all for more lighting. 'It helps to draw more customers here, of course, but also some security that we need to feel safe for our employees, as well as for our customers that come in to visit us,' Tonya Perkins, Chief Operating Officer of ELG Sweet Boutique, said. Click here for more information about the program as a whole, and here for details about the business participation bonus. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
