Gold retreats from five-week high

Business Recorder12 hours ago
NEW YORK: Gold eased on Tuesday as investors booked profits after prices scaled a five-week high, while market participants focused on trade talks ahead of US President Donald Trump's August 1 deadline. Spot gold fell 0.2% to $3,388.13 per ounce by 1120 GMT. Earlier in the day, bullion hit its highest since June 17. US gold futures were down 0.3% at $3,397.80.
While prices were lower amid profit-booking, they remained close to the five-week high due to uncertainty ahead of Trump's August 1 tariff deadline, said Jigar Trivedi, a senior commodity analyst at Reliance Securities. 'Gold is likely to stay bullish. A strong resistance is seen near $3,420. On the flip side, $3,350 is a support,' he said.
The US dollar index steadied against its rivals. A stronger dollar makes greenback-priced gold more expensive for other currency holders. European Union diplomats said the bloc was exploring broader counter-measures against the United States as prospects for a trade agreement with Washington diminished. Trump has threatened 30% tariffs on European imports if no deal is reached before the August 1 deadline. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration prioritised the quality of trade deals over timing.
Focus is also on the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting scheduled for next week, where the central bank is expected to hold interest rates steady for now and potentially begin cuts in October. Gold tends to perform well in a low-interest-rate environment and during times of geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
Spot silver lost 0.2% to $38.86 per ounce, platinum added 0.2% to $1,440.47 and palladium declined 0.9% to $1,253.65. Russia's Nornickel, the leading global producer of palladium, lowered its palladium output forecast, now expecting between 2.677 and 2.729 million ounces compared with the earlier estimate of 2.704-2.756 million ounces.

Robusta coffee prices fall while sugar and cocoa also ease

LONDON: Robusta coffee futures fell on Wednesday, slipping towards the previous session's 16-month low on ample supplies, while sugar and cocoa prices also weakened slightly. Coffee Robusta coffee lost 0.8% to $3,264 a metric ton by 1151 GMT. Prices touched a 16-month low of $3,166 on Tuesday. Dealers said the market remains well supplied, buoyed by newly harvested crops from Brazil and Indonesia, while the potential for a larger crop in top robusta producer Vietnam also weighed on sentiment. A Vietnam coffee crop tour projected a 7% increase in the next crop. The market also remained focused on whether the U.S. would go ahead with the planned 50% tariff on imports on Brazilian coffee from August 1. They noted the flow of Brazilian conilon (robusta) coffee to Europe remained limited at the moment but could pick up if U.S. tariffs are imposed. Arabica coffee was up 0.2% at $2.9705 per lb. Robusta coffee recovers after hitting 16-month lows, cocoa also gains ground Sugar Raw sugar lost 0.9% to 16.15 cents per lb. Dealers said the market remained on the defensive, partly owing to improved prospects in India, where rains have boosted planting, and an expected large crop next season could lead to exports from the world's second-biggest producer. White sugar fell 0.8% to $468.50 a ton. Cocoa London cocoa eased by 0.1% to 5,248 pounds a ton. Exports of cocoa beans and semi-finished products at ports in top grower Ivory Coast since the start of the season on October 1 had reached 1.508 million tons by June 30, up 1.3% from 1.489 million tons in the same period last season, Coffee and Cocoa Council (CCC) data showed on Wednesday. Indian rupee dips but firmer yuan, exporter dollar sales cushion losses

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee ended marginally weaker on Wednesday with the strength in the Chinese yuan and exporter activity helping the currency hold above a psychologically important support level. The rupee closed at 86.4075 per U.S. dollar, down slightly from its close at 86.3675 in the previous session but managing to hold above the 86.50 support level. The offshore Chinese yuan rose to a near three-week high while the dollar index was a tad lower at 97.4. Dollar sales from a large private bank and exporter activity also helped the rupee contain its losses on the day, alongside positive regional cues, a trader at a state-run bank said. India's benchmark equity indexes, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 closed higher by about 0.6% each, tracking gains in global equities that were buoyed by hopes of easing trade tensions after a deal between the U.S. and Japan. 'Equity markets globally are rallying on the view that deals reduce uncertainty,' ING said in a note. Indian rupee weakens slightly, broad dollar softness cushions pressure U.S. President Donald Trump also announced a trade agreement with the Philippines, released terms of a previous deal with Indonesia on Tuesday and said that EU representatives were coming for trade negotiations on Wednesday. Officials from China and the U.S. are also expected to meet next week to discuss an extension to the deadline for negotiating a trade deal. For India, though, the prospects of a trade deal before the August 1 deadline have dimmed, with talks deadlocked over tariff cuts on key agricultural and dairy products. Foreign portfolio outflows and the lack of an outcome on trade negotiations have maintained pressure on the rupee, said Dilip Parmar, a foreign exchange research analyst at HDFC Securities.

India's TCS misses first quarter revenue view as CEO flags demand contraction Net new bookings rose $3.8 billion during the quarter, compared with $2.6 billion in the previous quarter and $4.1 billion in the year-ago period. Infosys also retained its operating margin forecast at 20-22% for FY26.
