Bucs training camp Day 1 medical updates: No timetable for stars on offense

USA Today4 days ago
The Bucs roster has reported to Tampa Bay, and as a result, they have started their journey into the 2025 season. It starts at home in Tampa Bay, but they hope it ends on the road in Santa Clara, where they have a chance to raise the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in five years.
The worst part of football, especially during training camp, is waiting for injury updates as they occur or as players attempt to return from injuries sustained the previous season.
In the case of the Bucs, they had to battle the injury bug more than they did any divisional opponent. It will make monitoring injuries throughout camp a big part of our coverage here on Bucs Wire over the next couple of weeks.
After day one, the stars on offense who are fighting their way back dominated the news cycle, though Todd Bowles offered updates on most Bucs players who were dealing with injuries.

Vikings training camp notebook, day 4: Metellus extended, McCarthy shines

Letting it riiiiiiiiiip 🎯🎯@jjmccarthy09📺: Back Together Weekend on @nflnetwork The Vikings roster has reported to Eden Prairie, and as a result, they have started their journey into the 2025 season. It starts at home in Minnesota, but they hope it ends on the road in Santa Clara, where they have a chance to raise the Lombardi Trophy for the first time. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O'Connell have new extensions, as do their assistants and coordinators. J.J. McCarthy is finally healthy and ready to take over the controls of a franchise that trusted him enough to stick with him when so many other options presented themselves. All in all, the coaching staff remains essentially unchanged, while the roster sees some position groups infused with youth and talent to solidify them. The fourth day of training camp has wrapped, though, and it was action-packed. We saw a new extension for a fan favorite in Josh Metellus, and fans got to see firsthand how well J.J. McCarthy is developing. J.J. McCarthy has the fanbase behind him The fans got to have their eyes on the 2025 version of the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, and as a result, they got to see their favorite team look impressive up close and personal. In the process, they got to do the Skol Chant with Hall of Famer Cris Carter, they saw the defense look impressive, but most importantly, they saw J.J. McCarthy. After months away from the spotlight, at least on the field, McCarthy returned with a vengeance. He unleashed velocity, quick decisions, tight window throws, you name it. What stole the show, though, was another deep ball touchdown to Jordan Addison downfield. It seems those two have a strong connection early in camp, with Justin Jefferson's absence that is likely to keep growing. Brian Flores is in his bag early in camp The questions around the defense have focused on the secondary and the usage of sophomore pass rusher, Dallas Turner. On Saturday, the Vikings extended their Swiss Army knife defender, Josh Metellus, and Dallas Turner was reported to be used on the field in a variety of ways as well. The biggest news, as it relates to Turner, is that he was on the field while Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel were also present. Opposing offenses struggled to get consistent blocking done while handling Van Ginkel and Greenard; throwing Dallas Turner into the mix makes things almost impossible. Expect to see more consistent usage of the former Crimson Tide defender as camp progresses. T.J. Hockenson is looking healthy Last year, the Vikings' star tight end T.J. Hockenson was coming off a torn ACL at the hands of Lions safety Kerby Joseph. Coming back from a knee injury in the middle of the season is never easy, and we saw Hockenson struggle to find the momentum and success he was accustomed to. Fast forward to Vikings training camp on Saturday, reports indicate that Hockenson is back to his old self. On Saturday, he was hit down the field by J.J. McCarthy, and it got a big pop out of fans. While no one wants to see Justin Jefferson miss time, it will help him build his connection with those around the offense.

Lamar Jackson serves up an extremely bold claim about the Baltimore Ravens' offense

Lamar Jackson pulled no punches in sharing his confidence in the Ravens' explosive offense All men are not created equal. We apologize, but you were lied to. Not everyone will possess Bill Gates' IQ or John Elway's clutch gene. Not everyone can motivate a room like Ray Lewis. Every Baltimore Ravens defender can't be the playmaker that Ed Reed was. Then, there's Lamar Jackson. To truly encapsulate what he does from the quarterback position, we have to mention Frank Tarkenton, Randall Cunningham, Michael Vick, and Steve Young as comparisons. Jackson is a two-time MVP who could have earned his third trophy had a few more votes gone his way this past season. Some discuss his need to win a Super Bowl as a means of validation. We won't. Jackson will win a Lombardi Trophy at some point. With the team he has been surrounded with, some believe that day will come sooner rather than later. Jackson says this team's offense is elite and has no ceiling. "I believe our offense has no limits, because we got guys that can play any position. Man, there's no roof. The ceiling is unlimited for our guys, and I really don't want give our offense away... We're going to keep it under the radar until teams have to see us." There you have it, straight from the source and live from Ravens training camp. It's year eight, and Jackson and company are tired of these early playoff exits. Might this be the year? The additions of everyone from DeAndre Hopkins and Jaire Alexander to rookies Mike Green and Malaki Starks have this fan base salivating. Last season, Baltimore led the NFL in rushing, and Jackson threw for 4,172 yards and 41 touchdowns while leading all NFL QBs in passer rating (119.6) and QBR (77.3). They say a quarterback's best friend is a strong running game. Jackson has that. Derrick Henry came just 79 yards short of becoming the first player in NFL history to eclipse 2,000 yards rushing in a single season twice. Everyone knows how good he is. Jackson wants you to know there are weapons everywhere. "We have a great group of guys, a great wide receiving corps, great running backs, great tight ends [and a] great offensive line. We got the same guys back, [with] one guy missing [from last year] on the O-line. Defense is looking incredible as always. We're looking great on paper, like I said, but we're going to see when the time comes." You're on notice. So are the rest of us. Baltimore turned the 2024 NFL season into a 17-game fireworks show. Expect more of the same, if not more, in 2025.

ESPN analyst believes Lamar Jackson is getting closer to a legacy few will ever match

Longtime ESPN voice believes Ravens star Lamar Jackson is on the cusp of immortality They just don't make them like that anymore... Oh yeah! You remember hearing that a time or two. That's one of those nuggets you probably heard while hanging out with dad (or maybe grandad). It was a phrase meant to show appreciation for the 'good old days, when cars were better built and sofas didn't tear up because you sat on them. They don't make them like Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson either. He's a walking evolution at the quarterback position. He's this generation's Randall Cunningham, a right-handed Steve Young or Michael Vick. 'Action Jackson' is special, and he can still play at a high level for several more years. That's good news for Ravens fans everywhere. But, is Lamar Jackson approaching immortality? Jackson's story is still being written, and it's too early to make determinations about when and how it ends. All we can guarantee is this. If he adds another MVP trophy and wins a Super Bowl or two, we'll be talking about Canton and his Pro Football Hall of Fame argument. Recently, the most unique and compelling of words was attached to his name: immortal. Hmmm... It sounds interesting. Don't blame us. Blame ESPN's Mike Greenberg. He's the one who brought this up. Here's what he said on the subject. "For Lamar and Josh Allen, what they're playing for is immortality. Both of them could retire tomorrow, and they'd be in the Hall of Fame. But, if either of them, and we'll use Lamar in this case because that's who we're talking about, wins a championship, all of a sudden he vaults into that place where the conversation on shows like this one are, 'Where does he belong on the list with the great quarterbacks of all time?' Two regular-season MVPs and a Super Bowl starts that conversation." It's interesting... We'll tell you that. Still, nothing says 'immortal' like having one's bust carved and having it placed in the hallowed football shrine in Canton. Jackson has a chance at having that happen. Winning a Lombardi Trophy will certainly help his argument. There are Super Bowl winners who were never enshrined. There are HOF enshrinees who never won 'the chip'. The AFC is loaded, but this season represents Jackson's best opportunity to win a ring. Let that be his and the Ravens' goal this season. Immortality can wait, even if we can make successful arguments for why he's on his way to arriving there.
