Nandi Hills to get new glass-walled restaurant as tourist numbers climb: Report
The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) is developing a new 200-seater facility, Mayura Sunrise, to meet the growing demands of tourism at the hilltop in Chikkaballapur district.
According to the report, the project was officially launched when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah laid its foundation stone during a recent Cabinet session held on the hill itself, a symbolic gesture underscoring the government's focus on improving tourism infrastructure in the region.

The new restaurant is being built on the site of an older KSTDC structure that has now been demolished. The tourism body already operates the Mayura Pine Top hotel and restaurant nearby, but officials say the rising footfall has far outpaced its capacity, the report added.
'The existing facility can no longer handle the crowd. We're now building a modern restaurant with transparent glass windows that will allow visitors to enjoy the sunrise and valley views while dining,' said a senior KSTDC official according to the publication.
According to data from the KSTDC, tourist numbers have surged in recent years. Around 19.48 lakh people visited Nandi Hills in 2023, and the number climbed to 21.32 lakh in 2024. Projections show the footfall could reach 23.35 lakh in 2025 and continue to rise to 31.98 lakh by 2028, growing at an estimated 9% annually, The Hindu reported.
The restaurant is one of several key upgrades planned. A long-awaited ropeway project is expected to begin construction soon, and authorities are considering traffic curbs to protect the fragile hilltop. District in-charge Minister MC Sudhakar has proposed restricting private vehicle access, especially as part of the hilltop parking area is set to become a terminal for the ropeway.
Tourist traffic to Nandi Hills has reached significant volumes during peak weekends. In December 2024 alone, over 12,700 vehicles and 21,000 two-wheelers made their way up the hill on weekends, raising concerns about congestion and environmental degradation.

Delhi court declares UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari fugitive economic offender
A Delhi court on Saturday declared United Kingdom-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari a fugitive economic offender in a case pertaining to tax evasion and money laundering, reported The Indian Express. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal of Tis Hazari court on an application moved by the Enforcement Directorate under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, according to The Hindu. It will enable the Enforcement Directorate to confiscate Bhandari's assets worth crores of rupees. Bhandari is accused of defrauding the Indian income tax authorities between July 1, 2015, and February 7, 2017, by submitting two tax returns in which he deliberately hid details about his foreign assets and foreign income. As a resident of India at the time, the 63-year-old was obligated to pay tax on all his global assets and income. In 2016, Bhandari fled India for London, despite a lookout notice against him. In October 2016, a case was registered against him under the Official Secrets Act after confidential defence ministry documents were recovered from his residence during an Income Tax department raid. The Enforcement Directorate had told a Delhi court in April that a court in the UK has rejected its appeal for Bhandari's extradition. In its application to declare the arms dealer a fugitive economic offender, the central agency claimed that the UK court's order had no bearing on Indian proceedings against Bhandari, reported ANI. Bhandari opposed the application, stating that his stay in London is legal, as the London High Court had refused his extradition. His counsel, Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, claimed that the Enforcement Directorate's plea was unclear, improperly filed, and did not meet the legal standards under the Fugitive Offenders Act. On Saturday, the court stated it was 'satisfied that Bhandari, against whom an warrant of arrest has been issued…has left India so as to avoid criminal prosecution', reported The Indian Express. 'Further, this court is satisfied that the total value of the schedule offence is `100 crore or more,' said Aggarwal. He added that the 'extradition attempt may have failed, but it will not make the accused an angel or immune to prosecution for the violation of Indian laws'. Bhandari has alleged that he had faced 'undue harassment and pressure' from several enforcement agencies to 'compel him to give false statements against the political opponents of the government'. He fled India due to this 'harassment', he claimed. Besides tax evasion, Bhandari is also one of the accused in a case of alleged corruption in the procurement of Pilatus trainer aircraft in 2009. In June 2019, the Central Bureau of Investigation had filed a case against Bhandari and unknown officials of the Indian Air Force, Defence Ministry and Switzerland-based Pilatus Aircraft.

July 9 strike against Centre's policies; for workers and unemployed: Amarjeet Kaur
The strike called by ten Central Trade Unions on July 9 on 17-point charter of demands is against the policies of the Narendra Modi government and for both the unemployed and the workers, said senior trade union leader and All India Trade Union Congress general secretary Amarjeet Kaur. In an interview to The Hindu, she said the strike is very significant to prepare working class and the farming community and agricultural labourers for a long drawn battle. Questioning the government move to curb trade union rights, she said investors are not coming to India not because of workers, but because of the government policy of promoting one or two companies. Excerpts from the interview: What is the relevance of this strike compared to other years? The relevance of this strike is that this will be beginning of larger movements in India. Enough is enough. This Government has stopped recruitments. They are not creating jobs for the youth. Instead, they have started recruiting those who are already retired for lesser salaries and without any social security. They have done this in Railways and in the steel sector. There are about 15 lakh notified job openings in Central Government and in Central Public Sector Undertakings. But the Government is in no mood to appoint people, rather is outsourcing and contractualising many jobs. The direction is very clear, unemployment will be very, very serious in this country. For existing employees, they have decided not to revive old pension scheme (OPS). They say they will go ahead with Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). Now, the UPS is more bad than the National Pension System (NPS). Once you opt for UPS, you have no other option to shift to NPS or to OPS. And thirdly, they have continued with the policy which we opposed — the Employment Linked Incentive. They are using workers' money in Employees Provident Fund Organisation to fund employers. We demand increasing the work days under MGNREGA, a national minimum wage for all sectors of ₹26000 per month, a minimum PF pension of ₹9000 per month and a monthly pension of ₹6000 for those who are not covered under any pension schemes. Has the Government held any discussions with you on this charter? Last year when we met Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and made a detailed presentation about our demands. He told us that he will study these demands. But instead, the government was trying to implement the four Labour Codes, which stand against the labour rights we have in this country. This government does not believe in consultation. The Indian Labour Conference has not been convened for more than a decade. We asked Mr. Mandaviya to convene ILC. In March, Mr. Mandaviya said the Centre will implement Labour Codes. We decided to burn the copies of Labour Codes the day it gets implemented and will strike work on May 20. Considering the situation along the borders, we later postponed the strike to July 20. But the government had no such considerations. The Prime Minister's Office is sending advisory letters to all the state governments and telling them to change the labour laws as per labour codes. Government and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh have been saying that the States are implementing Labour Codes and the protests should be directed towards them. Except the BJP-run State governments, nobody has notified these codes. This is very clear to the central government. So they are playing a double game. The Centre amalgamated 29 laws and codified them. On the basis of codes, Centre is asking State governments to change their rules and Acts. Trade unions will fight the state governments and we have been fighting. We had warned States against implementing Labour Codes. We will fight it. Government says that Codes are necessary for ease of doing business and for attracting investments… They are intimidating State governments that there will be no investments in states if Labour Codes are not implemented. States have to follow Indian constitution and our label laws. Serious employers and investors know that stability is important and industrial peace is key for industrial growth. The reason for declining investment is not workers. It's because of our government's economic and social policies and also the global economic slowdown. Why should foreign investors come into a country where communal attacks are normal? Law and order is a serious question. Crony capitalism is another hurdle for investors. Most of the resources are being handed over to Adani and Ambani. Why will investors come when they know that our government is standing with two corporates and in this competition, there is no win-win situation. So workers are not responsible for this. Workers agitations are suppressed here. How many sectors will respond to this strike this time? The strike notices are served at banks, insurance companies, steel sector, coal sector, minerals and petroleum sector, copper sector and in some airports. Rail workers will have mobilisations in support of strike, but no strike there. Defence sector is going on strike. They have given strike notices everywhere. All the states, government employees have given strike notice. We will have a 'band-like' of situation in Asam, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Punjab, Bihar, Kerala, West Bengal and in many other States. Opposition parties have been approached by the unions, and they have extended their support. The message has gone. Workers in unions affiliated with the BMS have pledged support. This strike is very significant to prepare working class and the farming community and agricultural labourers for a long drawn battle.

'The global tech meltdown is real and there is clear uncertainty in the global market. However, post-tariff drama, we see clients talking to tech vendors and showing a willingness to open up their purses. It is a discretionary spend. That's good news,'' he told The Hindu. One out of three clients is looking for AI-led services, he added. On Version 1's India expansion plan, Ganesh said the company has plans to build India as a prominent geography. 'The plan is to make India a prominent delivery centre in the next three years. This will include setting up an innovation lab in India, partnering with academia, and expanding delivery capabilities. The company aims to quadruple its India headcount to over 2,000 employees, in the next three years,'' he added. Further commenting on market outlook, Mr, Kalyanaraman said, the AI as a service (AIaaS) market was expanding rapidly, with a projected market size anticipated to rise from about $ 20 billion in 2025 to $91 billion by 2030, featuring a CAGR of 35%.
