'Coco Killer': Canadian Teenager Knocks Gauff Out Of Montreal In Straight-Sets Shocker
Victoria Mboko upset top-seeded American Gauff, who succumbed to a 1-6, 4-6 straight sets defeat to the Canadian, as the 18-year-old secured her progress in Montreal.
American tennis ace Coco Gauff was shown the exit door by teenager Victoria Mboko on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open.
Canadian teenager upset top-seeded American Gauff succumbed to a 1-6, 4-6 straight sets defeat to Canadian Mboko as the 18-year-old secured her progress in Montreal.
'Your support was incredible," Mboko said, thanking the crowd following her remarkable victory over he the two-time Grand Slam champion Gauff.
'I'm really happy to win today. It's incredible. I'm so happy to beat such a great champion," she said while addressing the home support that urged her on throughout the fixture.
With the crowd behind her firmly, Mboko closed out the fixture in just over an hour.
'When I was up 5-4, the crowd started cheering even louder, and everything got super noisy," Mboko said.
'She's playing high-level tennis." Gauff said. 'I think that's what showed today. I think she was the better player."
Mboko is slated to take on Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, following the Spaniard's 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Lin Zhu of China in a rain-interrupted match.
Mboko got her revenge on Gauff, who beat the Canadian earlier in the year during the WTA event in Rome as the American fought back to dig out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win.
'I was actually really thinking about it a lot during the match," Mboko said.
'I had flashbacks to when I played her in Rome a little bit. I just remember when she came out playing even better and stepped it up a bit better. Wanted to step my game up a little bit more and make sure I matched whatever she was producing, and I wanted to stay right there with her."
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Kazakh Elena Rybakina set up a quarterfinal encounter as Kostyuk beat McCartney Kessler of the United States 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Rybakina topped Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

Hockey India names 24-member mens hockey team for tour of Australia
New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) India, on Monday, included young defender Poovanna CB in the 24-member men's hockey team to be led by ace drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh for the four-match Tour of Australia, starting August 15 in Perth. The assignment will serve as an exposure tour for the team ahead of the all-important Asia Cup at home in Rajgir from August 29, which is also a World Cup Qualifier. 'We are heading to Perth Australia to sharpen up ahead of the Asia Cup in Bihar. The focus will be on improving our physical conditioning and technical execution through quality training and warm up matches," chief coach Craig Fulton said. Fulton also spoke about testing youngsters in the squad and giving them the exposure ahead of important outings. 'We have brought in some younger players to give them valuable exposure and test combinations under pressure. This camp is a key part of our preparation and a chance to build individual and team momentum before competing at home. Taylor Fritz beat Jiri Lehecka in a three-hour match to reach the ATP Toronto Masters quarterfinals. Taylor Fritz battled into Monday morning before finally getting past Czech Jiri Lehecka with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5) victory in three hours to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Toronto Masters. The US second seed finished off a complete matched set of Masters 1000 quarterfinals as the last piece of the puzzle fell into place in Canada. The late-night marathon lasted 39 games without a break of serve, with 15 aggregate break points going begging. Fritz delivered two aces in the final-set tiebreaker on his way to the narrow win, moving into the last eight as Lehecka drove long. 'Making all the Masters quarters is really cool," Fritz said. 'It shows consistency. Today I had to accept that parts of my game were just not there. I was bailed out by a lot of first serves, but I was making too many mistakes."
