Commercial Vehicle sales expected to rebound by up to 5% in FY26: CareEdge Ratings

After two years of subdued performance, India's commercial vehicle (CV) industry is poised for a modest recovery in FY26, with overall wholesale volumes expected to grow by 2–5 per cent, according to
CareEdge Ratings
. The turnaround is likely to be supported by increased infrastructure activity, favourable monsoon forecasts, improved financing conditions, and fleet replacement demand.
The Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment is projected to grow by 2–4 per cent, while Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCV s) are expected to see a stronger rebound of 4–6 per cent.
'The commercial vehicle industry is set for moderate growth, led by rising infrastructure spends, improved rural sentiment, and the easing of interest rates,' said Arti Roy, Associate Director, CareEdge Ratings. She added that factors such as road tax concessions under the scrappage policy and transition to electric buses will further boost demand, especially in the bus segment.
The Reserve Bank of India's 100 basis point cumulative repo rate cut between February and June 2025 is expected to ease financing costs in FY26, boosting affordability for buyers and encouraging demand. (One hundred basis points are equivalent to 1 per cent). States offering road tax concessions of 15–25 per cent under the
Vehicle Scrappage Policy
are also likely to support new vehicle sales.
M&HCV and LCV performance
In FY25,
M&HCV truck volumes
declined by 2.7 per cent, weighed down by election-related disruptions, delayed infrastructure projects, and high interest rates. In contrast, M&HCV bus volumes rose 21.6 per cent, driven by increased demand for public transport and government fleet renewals. Overall M&HCV volumes grew by a muted 1.2 per cent.
The LCV segment also faced headwinds, including weak rural demand, competition from electric cargo three-wheelers, and cautious financing for small fleet operators. While LCV passenger carriers grew 8 per cent, goods carriers declined by 1 per cent.
The sector will also navigate key regulatory changes in FY26–FY27, including the mandatory introduction of air-conditioned truck cabins from October 2025 and the rollout of TREM-V emission norms for non-road vehicles from April 2026. These changes may increase vehicle costs, potentially triggering a pre-buying rush in FY26.
Overall, CareEdge Ratings expects these combined factors to drive a gradual but sustained recovery in India's commercial vehicle industry in the year ahead.

He had taken a loan from the bank to purchase the machine. The dealer had told the farmer that the machine would separate the grain and dust. Dyamappa found that the machine was not separating the grain and dust and complained about this to the dealer. He found that other farmers were also facing the same problem. When repeated pleas to get the machine repaired failed, Dymappa approached the District Consumer Grievances Redressal Commission seeking remedy. On examining the case in detail, the commission headed by judge Eshappa Bhute decreed that there was deficiency in service to the consumer by the Guru Hindustan Agro Industries Company and ordered that the company refund Rs 3.5 lakh, along with interest at the rate of 8%. Additionally, it ordered payment of Rs one lakh as compensation for the mental agony and inconvenience suffered by the consumer and another Rs 10,000 towards court expenses.

The rupee weakened sharply against the dollar on Monday, settling 47 paisa lower at 85.86 per dollar. The decline was primarily triggered by US President Donald Trump's announcement of an additional 10 per cent tariff on countries aligning with Brics policies. This, he described as 'anti-American.' During the day, the rupee breached the 86 per dollar mark, hitting a low of 86.03 before recovering slightly. According to dealers, the partial recovery was likely due to intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through dollar sales. Adding to the pressure was renewed strength of the US dollar amid rising uncertainty over trade policies. Market caution intensified as the 90-day extension on tariff suspensions is set to expire on Wednesday, with no formal trade agreements signed so far. The lack of clarity on future trade arrangements has made investors more risk-averse, contributing to the rupee's decline, said dealers. Additionally, there was a strong dollar demand from a major private bank, which further added pressure on the local currency. The rupee's fall below the 85.80 per dollar level triggered stop-loss orders, leading to further decline, said dealers. In the absence of positive developments on the trade front, market participants expect the rupee to weaken further. It could potentially touch 86.50 per dollar in the near term. The dollar index was trading at 97.36, against the previous day's 96.95. It measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies. 'Dollar has strengthened and there was a lack of inflows in the market. The RBI has intervened around 86 levels,' said a dealer at a state-owned bank. President Trump's declaration, made via a social media post, stressed that there would be 'no exceptions' to the proposed tariffs. This announcement has added fresh uncertainty to global trade dynamics, with emerging markets like India bearing the brunt of investor nervousness. Given the heightened volatility, the RBI is expected to keep a close watch and may intervene again to stabilise the rupee. Meanwhile, the 10-year 2035 bond has now gained sufficient secondary market liquidity to be widely recognised as the new benchmark government security. It would replace the earlier 6.79 per cent 2034 bond. Although the 2035 bond saw a slower start, partly due to fewer auctions, its liquidity has steadily improved. The benchmark bond yield settled at 6.29 per cent, against the previous close of 6.30 per cent. According to bond market participants, over the past month, it has reached the threshold needed to support large trades in the range of ₹1,000–2,000 crore with minimal market impact, a key criterion for benchmark status. The transition took longer than previous shifts to the 2034 and 2033 bonds, largely because a significant portion of outstanding bonds had moved into banks' hold-for-trading (HFT) portfolios or insurance companies' held-to-maturity (HTM) books. This limited availability in the secondary market. Further, recent changes to investment norms, particularly the removal of a 90-day cap on HFT holdings, also reduced the typical churning that supports market liquidity.

The data, based on a recent study shared by the analyst, covers more than 3 million digitally active Indians and shows growing financial stress across income to Sujay U, the analyst who shared the findings on LinkedIn, higher-income individuals are not spared either. In many cases, up to 45% of their monthly income is going toward loan repayments. These include home loans, car loans, credit card dues, and buy-now-pay-later schemes.'In cities like Mumbai, just paying the home loan can eat up nearly half a paycheck,' Sujay study finds that household debt has reached 42% of India's GDP by the end of 2024. This is affecting the ability of people to build emergency savings or make long-term investments. National savings have declined to 5.3% of GDP, a 47-year low.'That number should rattle us all,' Sujay Reserve Bank of India has already highlighted an increase in defaults, especially in unsecured and microfinance loans. The concern is that even a small disruption in income—such as a job loss, illness, or economic downturn—could lead to widespread repayment pointed to a deeper issue behind the trend: 'The new EMI-driven lifestyle means flashy gadgets and instant gratification, but it's debt-driven and threatens long-term financial health.'He added, 'EMIs crossing 40% of net income are a red flag.' He urged that financial literacy and budgeting are no longer optional but have become essential life ended his post saying: "India's growth miracle depends on financially resilient citizens, not debt-slaves. Let's stop glamorising EMIs and start smart, sustainable wealth-building."
