Going green: Power Cement to install 7.5MW wind plant

In a significant step toward sustainability, Power Cement Limited (POWER) has announced plans to set up a 7.5MW wind power project, which is expected to go live by FY2026.
The listed cement maker shared the development during its corporate briefing session on Wednesday.
The project will utilise Goldwind turbine with a capacity of 7,500 kW and will follow a rental model, similar to the company's existing solar agreements.
'Expected completion is targeted within FY2026,' the company stated.
Upon the project's completion, wind energy would account for 11% of Power Cement's energy mix.
The company already generates 34% and 6% of its energy from WHRS (Waste Heat Recovery System) and solar, respectively. Whereas, the remaining 60% comes from HESCO.
Founded in 1981, Power Cement Limited stands as the flagship Company of Arif Habib Group, a prominent financial and industrial conglomerate. The factory site of the company is located at Motorway M-9, Nooriabad, Sindh.
The company was previously known as Al-Abbas Cement Limited until its acquisition in 2010 by the Arif Habib Group.
Presently, the company has three manufacturing lines, with a cumulative nameplate clinker production capacity of 10,700 TPD, with total annual capacity of 3.21 million tons.
The company is one of the largest players in Pakistan's South zone with a total annual cement production capacity of 3.37 million tons, 11,235 TPD.
The announcement aligns with a broader industry shift in Pakistan toward renewable energy as companies look to cut energy costs and reduce reliance on the national grid.
Last month, Thatta Cement Company Limited completed and commissioned a 4.8MW wind power project at its plant in Thatta, Sindh.
Earlier this month, Ali Asghar Textile Mills Limited (AATM), a former textile unit turned logistic service provider, informed it was developing a 1,00KW (1MW) solar power project, which has now entered the execution phase.
In March, Tariq Corporation Limited announced plans to set up a 200KW solar power system at its facility.

Thar coal, renewables make Sindh energy basket of Pakistan: CM Murad

KARACHI: With one of the largest indigenous coal reserves in Thar and significant renewable energy potential, Sindh is the energy basket of Pakistan and can lead national progress through its diverse energy sources. Speaking at the Sindh Energy Diversity Conference organized by Energy Update in collaboration with the Government of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Sindh, highlighted that Thar's coal deposits are equivalent to the energy reserves of Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kuwait. Chief Minister Shah shared that the Thar coal project was initially conceived in the 1990s under the leadership of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and was eventually realized through one of the most successful public-private partnerships of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) in Thar Block II. This pioneering initiative disproved the myth that Thar coal, being lower-grade lignite, cannot be used to produce electricity. He added that Thar coal is now generating 1320MW of low-cost electricity in Block-II, powering households and industries across Pakistan. Moreover, an inclusive development approach has been followed, where almost every household in Thar Block-II is now solarized in line with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's vision that the people of Thar must benefit first from this progress. Nasir Hussain Shah, Sindh Minister for Energy and Planning & Development, pointed out that coal gasification plans are underway to expand Thar coal utilization to other key sectors, such as fertilizer and cement, which will reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Higher domestic production of fertilizers will help ensure an abundant and affordable supply of urea for farmers, ensuring greater food security for Pakistan. The Sindh government remains focused on supporting industries and delivering solar home systems to underserved communities, Minister Nasir said. Commending the Government of Sindh for its continued support, Amir Iqbal, CEO of SECMC, said that the Thar Block-II development served as a proof of concept and successfully marked six years of commercial operations on July 10 this year. He noted that 'SECMC supplies coal to three Independent Power Producers (IPPs), energizing over 3 million households and contributing to foreign exchange savings of around US$1.6 billion since inception. These plants consistently rank among the highest on the merit order, reaffirming Thar coal as the most cost-effective baseload fuel.' Amir added that Phase-III mine expansion is underway to make coal even cheaper and add another 660 MW power plant based on Thar coal. He also highlighted SECMC's community investments of providing quality education to over 5000 students with 35% female enrolment, free healthcare access to more than 350,000 patients since inception, and support for the Government of Sindh's solarization efforts covering 3,150 households in Thar Block-II. IBM rolls out new chips and servers, aims for simplified AI

SAN FRANCISCO: International Business Machines on Tuesday announced a new line of data center chips and servers that it says will be more power-efficient than rivals and will simplify the process of rolling out artificial intelligence in business operations. IBM introduced its new Power11 chips on Tuesday, marking its first major update to its 'Power' line of chips since 2020. These chips have traditionally vied against offerings from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices in data centers, particularly in specialized sectors such as financial services, manufacturing and healthcare. Like Nvidia's AI servers, IBM's Power systems are an integrated package of chips and software. Tom McPherson, general manager of Power systems at IBM, said the Armonk, New York-based company used that tight coupling to focus on reliability and security. The Power11 systems, available from July 25, will not need any planned downtime for software updates, and their unplanned downtime each year averages just over 30 seconds. They are also designed to detect and respond within a minute to a ransomware attack - where hackers encrypt data and then try to extract a ransom in exchange for the keys, IBM said. In the fourth quarter of this year, IBM plans to integrate Power11 with Spyre, its AI chip introduced last year. McPherson said IBM does not aim to compete with Nvidia in helping create and train AI systems, but is instead focused on simplifying AI deployment for inference, the process of putting an AI system to work in speeding up a business task. 'We can integrate AI capabilities seamlessly into this for inference acceleration and help their business process improvements,' McPherson said in an interview last week referring to work with early customers. 'It's not going to have all the horsepower for training or anything, but it's going to have really good inferencing capabilities that are simple to integrate.'
