MOE retraining over 100,000 teachers in digital pedagogy
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the initiative, which focuses on enhancing teachers' professional development, is being carried out in collaboration with Google for Education, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and local universities.
'Malaysia recognises that the education sector must shift from passive knowledge transmission to active skills cultivation, creativity, critical thinking and lifelong learning. We are at a crossroads. The choice is between marginal adaptation and bold transformation. Malaysia chooses the latter.
'The ASEAN Work Plan on Education (2021- 2025) lays out a robust framework for cooperation and Malaysia is fully aligned with its vision,' she said in her speech at the Empowering Education Summit 2025: Shaping ASEAN's Future Through Skills and Innovation, today.
Fadhlina said Malaysia is also strengthening collaboration between the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector and industry players through initiatives such as the National TVET Empowerment Agenda, which enables the public and private sectors to jointly develop modular, industry-relevant training programmes.
For example, Fadhlina highlighted that in Johor and Penang, the electrical and electronics (E&E) sector is collaborating with polytechnics and vocational colleges to co-design semiconductor-focused TVET pathways.
She also noted that selected pilot schools have begun using artificial intelligence (AI)-powered learning platforms to personalise student learning, identify early signs of dropout risk and provide tailored remediation.
Additionally, the MOE is expanding Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives such as #MySTEMAmbassadors and STEM4ALL, aimed particularly at rural and underprivileged students.
In 2024 alone, more than 200,000 students took part in STEM boot camps and robotics competitions, but digital equity remains a challenge, she added.
To address this, Fadhlina said the ministry is deploying hybrid solar-powered classrooms and satellite internet to 180 schools in Sabah and Sarawak, ensuring that innovation reaches all corners of the nation to narrow existing inequalities.
Fadhlina said that while Malaysia's bilingual education system has long integrated Bahasa Melayu and English, the MOE is now expanding elective language offerings to include Mandarin, Tamil, and ASEAN languages such as Thai, Khmer, and Vietnamese to promote deeper intra-ASEAN collaboration.
'ASEAN's strength lies in its cultural, linguistic and traditional diversity. To harness this, we must prepare our youth to be multilingual, adaptable and culturally competent,' she said.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- FWD Insurance Berhad (FWD Insurance) has announced a RM400,000 sponsorship to deliver 40 digital smartboards to 35 schools under the Keramat District Education Office (PPD). In a statement, FWD Insurance said the initiative, which aligns with the Ministry of Education's (MOE) digitalisation agenda, aims to equip students with critical financial knowledge and digital learning tools from an early age. The official handover was led by FWD Insurance Chief Executive Officer Mak See Sen, together with Deputy District Education Officer (Curriculum Sector), Mohd Helmy Abdul Najib. 'The smartboard distribution aligns with Thrusts 4 and 6 of MOE Digital Education Policy, which aim to empower strategic partners to equip schools with appropriate infrastructure for the implementation of digital learning. 'The policy also supports Keramat PPD's Bring Your Own Device to School (BYODS) Programme, which has been in place since 2021,' the statement said. To date, the smartboards have already been installed across the participating schools, and students are actively using them in their learning, said FWD Insurance. 'These devices serve as key tools to promote the integration of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into the classroom, further underscoring FWD Insurance's dedication to making financial education accessible to all,' it said. Meanwhile, Mak said it is FWD Insurance's vision to change the way people feel about insurance and to shape children's mindsets toward planning for their financial future. 'We are committed to equipping primary and secondary school students with essential financial literacy skills that will stay with them throughout their lives,' he said.

Rural schools included in Malaysia's digital education transformation
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has assured that rural schools are not being left behind in the implementation of the national education digitalisation policy, said Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh. He said claims that rural schools were being marginalised were inaccurate, noting that out of 110 educational institutions involved in the hybrid class pilot project, 41 were rural schools - demonstrating the MOE's commitment to a fair and inclusive approach. 'This clearly shows that in every initiative or project, MOE ensures no school is left behind or marginalised in the digital transformation of education. 'This year, the ministry will also implement a pilot project for the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered classroom programme involving 11 schools, including one in Sarawak - Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Lanang,' he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Wong was replying to a supplementary question from Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (GPS-Igan), who asked for assurance that rural schools would not be left behind in the implementation of the education digitalisation programme. In a related development, Wong also said that as of June 2025, a total of 405,158 education service officers (PPP) have undergone digital competency training as part of efforts to equip teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills in the digital field. He said that of the total, 23.81 per cent were at the basic level, 74.37 per cent at the intermediate level, while 1.81 per cent had reached the advanced level. He also informed the Dewan Rakyat that the ministry is currently in the fourth phase of enhancing information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, involving 1,801 schools that are still lacking in ICT equipment. 'To address this, a total of 31,724 devices will be distributed under an allocation of RM230 million. The implementation, scheduled from 2025 to 2030, is currently in the procurement assessment phase,' he said. - Bernama
