Summer McIntosh and Leon Marchand take gold at World Championships - but miss out on new world records
Romania's David Popovici also flirted with a record on day five at the World Aquatics Championships Arena, the 20-year-old claiming a thrilling 100m freestyle gold to go with his 200m crown on day three.
The 200m butterfly world record of 2:01.81 set by China's Liu Zige in 2009 is the last surviving mark from the supersuit era in women's swimming - and McIntosh narrowly missed out on breaking it.
She stormed to her third individual gold medal of the meet in 2:01.99, the second-fastest swim of all-time and a yawning three seconds better than American silver medallist Regan Smith.
Having made the last turn under world record pace the Canadian flagged slightly coming home and shouted an expletive when she spied the clock.
'I know that I messed up the last 15 metres of my race,' she said. 'Overall, happy with the time and a PB, but I didn't reach my goal tonight.'
China's 12-year-old marvel Yu Zidi finished just off the podium again having also finished fourth in the 200m individual medley won by McIntosh.
The 18-year-old might console herself in the knowledge that her bid for five individual titles remains intact, with the 400m individual medley and a hugely anticipated showdown with Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle still to come.
Only Michael Phelps has won five individual golds at a world championships.
Marchand, dubbed the 'French Phelps', celebrated a world record on Wednesday when he blitzed the long-standing 200m individual medley mark of Ryan Lochte with an incredible swim of 1:52.69 in the semi-finals. The 23-year-old shaved nearly a second and a half off the American's benchmark, which had stood for 14 years.
With victory seemingly assured in the final the only suspense was whether Marchand might reset his world record from the previous night but he ended up nearly a second short, with a time of 1:53.68.
It was still the second fastest swim ever and led to a dominant win by 0.62 seconds ahead of American Shaine Casas and Hungarian Hubert Kos. Britain's Duncan Scott was fourth, missing out on a medal by nearly a second.
Marchand said the record may have taken a bit out of him but he was hardly complaining.
'I felt so excited yesterday that I couldn't sleep,' he said. 'So I think I lost a lot of energy yesterday night, but it was my goal to break the record, so I was really happy with it.'
Popovici then emerged the winner of a sensational men's 100m freestyle final, clocking 46.51 to give Pan Zhanle's world record (46.40) a big scare.
American runner-up Jack Alexy also broke the 47-second barrier (46.92), while Paris Games silver medallist Kyle Chalmers took the bronze for Australia.
At 20, 200m Olympic champion Popovici has already completed the 100-200 sweep twice at world championships, having done the double at Budapest three years ago.
The United States celebrated a fourth gold in the meet as Katharine Berkoff won the 50m backstroke in 27.08 seconds, edging compatriot Smith.

Zhao Xintong falls victim to Ding Junhui Curse at Shanghai Masters as he loses first snooker match for nine months
ZHAO XINTONG lost his first snooker match for nine months as he fell victim to the Ding Junhui Curse. Kyren Wilson moved into Sunday's final of the Shanghai Masters with a superb 10-5 victory over China's reigning world snooker champion. 2 2 The Warrior, 33, scored breaks of 66, 75, 70, 95, 70, 101 and 51 across the 15 frames and crucially claimed all SIX frames in the evening session. For Xintong, it was a first defeat since losing to Shaun Murphy in the Last 32 of the UK Championship in York on November 23, 2024. After that loss in the North Yorkshire cathedral city, Xintong won an astonishing 26 matches in a row, which included lifting the Crucible crown in historic scenes for his country. But Xintong's Far East homecoming was ruined by the Kettering cueist as he completely flopped in the evening action. The Cyclone potted breaks of 113, 59, 95 and then a 121 to lead 5-4 in the afternoon but when nighttime came, he was outclassed by the Englishman. And forget all about the Crucible Curse, which he has to negotiate next spring in Sheffield – the Curse of Ding Junhui struck again in a competitive environment. This was the 21st time in a row that someone had beaten Ding, 38, and then LOST their next match. A run that stretches back to John Higgins being the first victim at the Players Championship in February 2024 in Telford. It is a quirk that whoever manages to eliminate Ding, the Godfather of Chinese snooker, from a tournament cannot repeat the victory in the next appearance. Robbie Williams is the last person, at the 2024 Welsh Open, to have knocked out Ding and then won his next match. Wilson, the world No.2, faces Ali Carter in the final, the best of 21 frames, at the Luwan Gymnasium and the winner will earn a £210,000 jackpot. Kyren Wilson said: 'The crowd were massively on Zhao Xintong's side, which is obviously to be expected out here. He's an absolute local hero. 'I managed to settle quite early in the game and find a bit of rhythm. 'It was about going back to the hotel, resetting and recharging and coming out firing for the evening. 'Snooker is booming in China. You can feel an air of expectation every time Xintong turns up for a match. I knew I had to play well. 'We are both young guys and the most recent world champions. Hopefully it's a game the Chinese fans can enjoy for many years to come. 'I did hear about the curse. It's a mad stat. Maybe Ding Junhui is so good he takes it out of you when you beat him. 'Who knows? It's a crazy stat. I am sure Ding enjoys it. 'Ali Carter has battled through some tough deciding matches, which is what he does best. He's a fantastic match player. A very gritty, determined character. 'I will have to dig deep and play some of the best snooker I have played in maybe the last 18 months.'

American swimmers hit back at Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte criticism
American swimmers in action at the World Championships in Singapore have responded with frustration at criticism of the squad by retired greats Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps. Lochte, whose 200m individual medley record was shattered by French swimmer Leon Marchand on Wednesday, posted an image of a funeral on Friday with a gravestone reading 'In loving memory of United States Swimming,' with a superimposed engraving of 'They set the bar high - until they stopped reaching for it'. 'Call it a funeral, or a fresh start,' Lochte captioned the image, 'We've got 3 years'. Phelps reposted it, adding a caption which read, 'Is this the wake-up call USA swimming needed?' The criticism appeared aimed at the fact that US athletes did not win a single gold medal among the first five relays of the world championships, with the mixed 400m relay team failing to make the final. The national federation has also come in for criticism over its management of the athletes' pre-championships camp in Thailand, where an 'overwhelming majority' of the swimmers suffered acute gastroenteritis, heading to the Worlds suffering the after-effects. However, despite a comparatively slower start to the meet, the US has won 26 medals as of close of play on Saturday and sits top of the medal table, with eight golds. Of those eight golds six have been won by female swimmers, with Luca Orlando the sole male individual champion, in the 200m butterfly. Saturday saw Katie Ledecky record a 23rd world championship title as well as Gretchen Walsh pick up gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly, while the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team smashed the world record to seal the title. Walsh was asked about the criticism on Saturday and said, 'I was made aware, and it's frustrating, but I think that personally, I am just trying to block it out and take on the meet with everything I can and just show up and race like I know how. 'I think we've been dealing with a lot so it's hard to get the criticism in the first place because I don't think people quite understand the magnitude of everything going on behind the scenes. 'But showing up, giving my best, and coming out a world champion twice now has been everything, and I'm just happy to keep doing it and happy that I'm feeling like myself again in the water.' Her compatriot Lilly King, who reached the 50m backstroke final on Saturday, tagged Lochte and Phelps in an Instagram post with the caption, 'Y'all been real quiet tonight,' accompanied by the eyes looking sideways emoji.
