Moncler raises prices on tariffs, may postpone store openings if downturn worsens

Italian luxury house Moncler said it's currently relying on "very slight price increases" to offset the initial impact of U.S. tariffs, but warned that broader economic weakness could cause it to delay its new store openings next year.
The Milan-headquartered retailer said Wednesday that it had raised prices by "mid-single-digit" percentages for the second half of 2025 and will raise them for the first half of next year, while adding that it was awaiting further clarity on U.S. levies before setting out its full strategy for 2026.
"We normally finalize our pricing strategy for the full Winter 2026 by October, more or less. So it's still early," Luciano Santel, group chief corporate and supply officer, said during an earnings call accompanying its second-quarter results.
Shares of Moncler were down 4% by 2 p.m. London time (9 a.m. E.T.).
Chief Business Strategy and Global Market Officer Roberto Eggs said he intended for those further price rises to be "more conservative," as the firm seeks to reconcile higher input costs with customer retention, but noted that it was also dependent on macro trends and currency movements.
"Clearly, the pricing today for consumers is a concern. I think we need to pay even more attention on this," he said.
Eggs also noted that the business would remain flexible on its plans for a dozen or so new store openings etched for 2026, based on the macro outlook and wider recovery of the beleaguered luxury sector.
"For the plan 2025, it's already there. Regarding 2026, the plan is not completely finalized, so we have some flexibility, ... in case things will not get better, to postpone some of the openings," he said, adding that those plans would also be set by October.
Moncler on Wednesday posted a dip in second-quarter sales after the market close, as weak tourist flows weighed on otherwise robust domestic demand in the key U.S. and China markets.
Group revenues fell 1% year-on-year at constant exchange rates to 396.6 million euros ($536.7 million) in the three months to June 30, below the 427.2 million forecast by analysts in an LSEG poll.
The U.S., which accounts for 14% of Moncler brand sales, recorded a 5% sales uptick in the quarter, but the company said it was unclear whether that was driven by shoppers accelerating purchases ahead of the ramping up of tariffs.
"To tell you that if this was driven by an anticipation of buying links to the tariffs? Honestly, I cannot tell you," Eggs said, noting other initiatives, such as a partnership with luxury department store Nordstom, which helped boost demand.
Sales in Asia, the group's largest market, were flat on the quarter, while in Europe, the Middle East and Africa they declined 8%. The company attributed it to a rebalancing of the Japanese yen, with Japan the only Asian country to record negative sales growth, as well as soft tourist spending in Europe.

Meanwhile, US-Japan trade deal may already be under pressure, as reports on Friday suggest the two sides disagree on how to split profits from Japan's $550 billion investment into the US. Sony Group is evaluating the potential sale of its cellular chipset business, Sony Semiconductor Israel, reported Reuters, citing three sources. This divestment is part of the company's strategy to focus on its entertainment operations. The Japanese conglomerate is collaborating with investment bankers to explore the sale, which is still in its preliminary phase, the sources indicated. The division, previously known as Altair Semiconductor, generates approximately $80m in annual recurring revenue and could be valued at around $300m in a potential transaction, they added. The business, which supplies cellular chipsets for connected devices such as wearables, smart meters, and home appliances, is expected to draw interest from both financial investors and companies within the semiconductor sector, the sources told Reuters. Sony declined to comment, and the sources spoke on condition of anonymity as the discussions are not public, the report noted. Sony acquired the Israel-based unit in 2016 for $212m. The company has increasingly prioritised its entertainment divisions, including games, movies, and music, which accounted for over 60% of its profit last year. As part of its portfolio restructuring, Sony is also preparing for a partial spinoff and direct listing of its financial services arm later this year. In April 2025, Bloomberg also reported that Sony is considering spinning off its semiconductor unit, potentially making Sony Semiconductor Solutions an independent entity this year. Japanese investors and analysts are skeptical about whether Seven & i Holdings will still take 7-Eleven public in North America next year in the aftermath of the c-store retailer's failed megamerger with Alimentation Couche-Tard, according to a report from Bloomberg. Nearly a year after its initial bid, Circle K's parent company withdrew its almost $50 billion buyout offer for Seven & i, operator of over 80,000 7-Eleven c-stores globally, late last week due to what it called a lack of engagement from Seven & i's leadership. Couche-Tard emphasized that Seven & i lacked 'good faith and judgement' during the process, although Seven & i called these accusations a mischaracterization. Regardless of why the potential deal flopped, Couche-Tard is out, and there's now little reason for Seven & i to take 7-Eleven public because it no longer needs to fend off an unsolicited offer, investors and analysts told Bloomberg last week. 'The company should keep holding its entire stake as the situation has changed,' Ikuo Mitsui, a fund manager at financial services firm Aizawa Securities Group, said in the report. '7-Eleven is the company's crown jewel, and it makes more sense for it to keep its 100% stake, which should contribute to higher corporate value.' Taku Sugawara, an analyst at financial services firm Iwai Cosmo Securities, told Bloomberg that Seven & i may have only considered taking 7-Eleven public to boost its own stock price as a means to fend off Couche-Tard's bid. Since the deal is now off the table, 'it's possible for the company to end up scrapping the IPO plan,' Sugawara said in the report. But Seven & i appears set on its plans despite what experts think. Earlier this week in a letter to Couche-Tard, Seven & i's special committee, spearheaded by Chair Paul Yonamine, said it believes management's plan is 'concrete and actionable,' and that the company is now 'turning our full attention to creating value through our standalone plan' since talks with Couche-Tard have ceased. 'We know better than anyone that we need to perform and deliver,' the committee said in its letter. 'Our hard work continues, and we look forward to updating our stakeholders later this summer.' Seven & i revealed plans to take 7-Eleven public in North America back in March. The move, planned for the second half of 2026, is expected to leverage the chain's ubiquity in the U.S. — where it has over 9,000 c-stores — and help it grow faster by giving it more flexibility and responsiveness to its customers while utilizing synergies with Seven & i. Experts told C-Store Dive earlier this year that an IPO would generate significant capital for 7-Eleven in North America, allowing the convenience retailer to invest in its business. That could mean expanding its footprint, remodeling stores or continuing to build its foodservice capabilities.
