Older Adults Are Sharing The Products And Trends That Were All The Rage Back In The Day That Have Disappeared Entirely

Yahoo21-05-2025
Though trends and products are often reimagined and revisited every few decades, many end up vanishing from present-day society completely!! So we recently asked the older folks (Boomers, Gen-X, and older Millennials) of the BuzzFeed Community to share which trends or products were once popular but have since disappeared. Here are their responses!
1."Department store catalogs just before Christmas and going directly to the toy section in the back to circle what you wanted for Christmas."

2."Napkins that fit on your lap. They are all so small and thin now, they don't even lie across your leg, nor do they do the job when wiping your hands. Even using several modern napkins together doesn't really work…so we all look like rude slobs now. Good luck finding a decent hand towel when you use the washroom… if they exist, hope that 3' worth helps, if you can get the dispenser to cooperate."
—dizzyking434
3."The decline of civilization began when they stopped putting toys in cereal boxes."
—sparklesthecupcake
"In the 70s, cereal boxes had single-song cardboard 'records' on the back that you popped out and they played on a phonograph. My first was 'Sugar Sugar' by The Archies."
—emoswan12
4."Event television. There were shows or programming that, if you missed it, there wasn't any other way to watch unless there were reruns. You had to watch it at the time it was airing and talk about it the next day."
—givemeallthebooksandtea
5."Prank Calls! It was so much fun to make a silly, anonymous phone call to your friends, your enemies, or even your grandmother. It would be hard not to laugh while changing your voice to pretend to be someone else. To this day, Grandma still doesn't know how Elvis got her phone number."
—Anonymous, 46, North Carolina
6."The Avon Lady coming to your house and leaving those tiny lipstick and perfume samples."
—ginnyjensen
7."Paper maps. I grew up with one of those thick Rand McNally map books in the car when we took long road trips. Navigating in a completely foreign area was a fun activity."
—syringistic
8."8-track tapes and their players. Sometimes the song would click to the next track while it was playing, and you couldn't rewind to listen again."
—shaboomer
9."Kids will never know the joy of going to Radio Shack and checking out toys, gear, and all the batteries you could buy! Walkie Talkies! Tesla Lightning Globes and Tandy Tandy Tandy toys! It was Best Buy before there was Best Buy!"
—tendtomebollocks
10."Remember stores where you could listen to CDs with headphones before buying?"
—sparklesthecupcake
11."Play places at fast food establishments. There aren't that many that still have them."
—u/justhewayouare
12."Voiceovers in movie trailers. For some reason, I can't think of when exactly they died out. I just remember that they were a thing, and then they weren't."
—u/Sugarbear23
13."Does anybody else remember that trend where handlebar mustaches were put on everything? Pillows, shirts, etc. Like, some people even got them tattooed on their finger so they could put it on their lip and pretend they had one?"
—u/CalypsoCrow
14."Oatmeal used to contain a small milk glass or dish towel as a free gift, packed inside the oatmeal container. When I was a child, the milk glass was actually made of glass! It's scary to think about it now. By the time I was a teenager, it was a plastic cup. Now you get nothing!"
—Anonymous, 59, Texas
15."Salad bars. In the '80s, every restaurant had one, even some fast-food burger places like Wendy's."
—u/MarshmallowSoul
16."Cracker Jack boxes had real prizes in them, not paper or little pieces of plastic. I remember the first time my prize was a piece of paper. We stopped buying it. The box before that had a yo-yo in it, and another had a watch."
—Anonymous, 64, Idaho
17."Cigarette lighters/ashtrays in cars."
—u/Timmy26k
18."Quality of clothing. In the eighties, I wore Forenza, OBR, Benetton, to name a few. In the nineties, I was all about Old Navy and Gap. As I write this response, I'm wearing Gap jeans and a Gap shirt. Years ago, I could get a tear in an article of clothing, and it was barely noticeable. Now, if I get a tiny tear, the material is thinner, so it tears easily."
—Anonymous, 52, Chicago
19."One trend I miss is simply being in the moment — before smartphones turned every experience into a photo op. There was a time when vacations, concerts, family gatherings, or even a simple night out felt more genuine because we were actually present. Now, even if I choose not to record something, the moment is disrupted by others who feel compelled to document every second. Let's be honest—no one's going to rewatch that shaky, overexposed video of last year's 4th of July fireworks."

Where is Destination X filmed? All the mystery locations revealed so far and theories on the next stop

Destination X is the brand new BBC show that has got every talking - think: The Traitors meets Race Across the World. Hosted by Rob Byrdon, the new show sees 13 players aboard the X-bus with one key question: Where the X are they? With blacked-out windows, players must figure out their location based on limited clues. At the end of each episode, they place an X on the map. The closest players remain in the game, while the furthest player is eliminated. At the end of the series, one winner will bag a £100,000 prize. So far, two episodes of the show have aired and their locations have been revealed. Episode three will air on Wednesday 6th August, and viewers think they've already guessed the location. Here's everything you need to know. After much guessing, the location for episode one was revealed to be Paris. Lots of viewers guessed the French region of Alsace which many clues pointed to, and only one contestant, Dawn, successfully guessed Paris. After the contestants locked in their guesses, it was revealed that Deborah had put her X furthest away from their location. She was asked to step off the bus, where she immediately spotted the Eiffel Tower. At the start of the episode, the players flew from Baden-Baden, Germany to Alsace, then traveled north before ending up in Paris. Along the way, several clues were dropped - including a caricature of Kylian Mbappé (formerly of Paris Saint-Germain), a lookalike of Emily in Paris, classic French desserts, and a pun from Brydon, who said: "I fell in love" as a play on the word "Eiffel." At the end of episode two, Matterhorn, Switzerland was revealed to be Destination X. All the players successfully guessed Switzerland, but it was Dawn who had guessed the furthest away, opting for Lake Geneva. There was only a 5km difference between her and another player. After leaving Paris, the train drove through Dijon into Switzerland and then through Plage Des Pins in Yvonand. The players then headed to the Alps in the Swiss Italian border where many clues pointed to Switzerland and Matterhorn specifically. The Caution Highway Fault sign linked to CHF, which is the international code for the Swiss Franc and the +41 is the phone code for Switzerland. At the lake, the sign featured all four languages for Switzerland, and the sign spelled out the words Throne Mart - which when rearranged spelled Matterhorn. Additionally, the letters 'Terh' which Nick spotted (and didn't tell the others) are the middle letters of Matterhorn. Episode three is yet to air, but viewers are speculating that the players will be heading to Munich, Germany. In episodes one. several airports were shown on the departure board, including Charles de Gaulle Airport, Sion Airport in Switzerland, Salzburg Airport, Munich and more. Viewers believe this to be a dead giveaway, considering episodes one and two saw the contestants head to Paris and Matterhorn, which is right next to Sion. "Surely wouldn't be this obvious, right?" one viewer asked on X (formerly Twitter), as they suggested Munich for the next destination. Viewers will have to wait until the next episode for the destination to be revealed, but the it's adding up. Other potential spots include Pisa (PSA), Venice (VCE), and Trieste (TRS), which were all shown on the departure board. New episodes of Destination X air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Royal Caribbean makes popular cruise ship pool adults only

Royal Caribbean makes popular cruise ship pool adults only originally appeared on TravelHost. Although Royal Caribbean is a family cruise line that has long designed its ships for family vacations, its newest cruise ships have broad appeal and are attracting more young adults than ever. Today, about half of Royal Caribbean cruise passengers are Millennials and younger, and that includes adult Gen Z vacationers in their 20s as well as Millennials who don't have kids. Royal Caribbean is attracting younger audiences not just because of its ships' thrilling onboard attractions, entertainment, and nightlife, but for its resort-style pools and bars, its newest Icon Class ships, adults can enjoy elevated beach club vibes at The Hideaway, an adults-only area at the back of the ship that features a wraparound bar and suspended infinity pool offering unmatched ocean views. But The Hideaway isn't the only area of the ship that was designed specifically for adults. Originally, Royal Caribbean planned to make top-deck Cloud 17 the adults-only area of the ship, but changed things up shortly before Icon first set sail. The Hideaway made more sense as an adults-only space tucked away at the back of the ship. That doesn't mean that Cloud 17 and other onboard hangouts aren't popular spots for adults who want to relax on the pool deck, however. One unique pool within Chill Island has always made more sense as an adults-only space. But Royal Caribbean never took steps to keep kids out of the area — until now. Royal Caribbean makes Swim & Tonic swim-up bar adults only Royal Caribbean just made its cruise ship swim-up bar, Swim & Tonic, adults only, according to Royal Caribbean Blog, an unofficial fan blog not affiliated with the cruise line. A passenger sailing aboard Icon of the Seas sent a photo to Royal Caribbean Blog of a new 'adults only' sign posted at the entrance to Swim & Tonic. A tropically themed pool area featuring a swim-up bar and tables and loungers in the water, Swim & Tonic is a popular spot for adults vacationing with and without & Tonic was previously open to passengers of all ages, and kids often joined their parents in the in-water bar. Now, the popular Icon of the Seas pool is off limits to anyone under the age of 18. Although Royal Caribbean hasn't commented on the reason behind the change, the cruise line likely added the new rule in response to passenger feedback. Icon of the Seas passengers have long argued that Swim & Tonic should be an adults-only space. Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter. Adults have valid concerns about kids in Swim & Tonic For many passengers, it's not only about maintaining a relaxing vibe in what's intended to be a refreshing swim-up bar space, it's about keeping pool water out of their drinks. 'I hated the fact that kids were allowed in the swim-up bar. Got pool water in my drinks because of the kids splashing,' Lopsided_War1859 wrote in a thread about the issue posted in the Royal Caribbean community on Reddit. Another passenger's experience revealed something else that causes a problem when kids play in the swim-up bar pool. 'My husband and I weren't able to visit the swim-up bar once on our honeymoon due to the pool being closed for cleaning. It was a daily occurrence for kiddos to have an accident of some sort in that pool,' Gold-Anything4801 Caribbean passengers have also argued that there are plenty of other pools for kids to play in on board Icon of the Seas, including other pools in and around central Chill Island, but there's only one true adult pool — the infinity pool in The Hideaway. Making Swim & Tonic adults only is a move that makes sense to many cruisers, and passengers will surely be eager to see if the new rule applies to Swim & Tonic on the newest Icon Class ship, Star of the Seas, too. Star of the Seas sets sail on its first cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida in August.
